What is Sweden good at? And could the rest of the world learn something from Sweden? What are some of the things that we could all learn from Swedish people and the Swedish way of life? These are some of the questions I'll be diving into in today's video, as we discuss what makes Sweden such a great place to live and work in. So let's hope other worldly leaders are watching and ready to take note - because there's a lot we could all be learning from Sweden!

"Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder", we actually have that exact same saying here in Norway: "Det fins ikke dårlig vær, bare dårlige klær" and most of us Norwegians have the same passion for the outdoors and we also have nature right outside our doorstep so to say, at least here in my city Bergen on the west coast, which is surrounded by seven mountains, all of which are very popular among hikers, locals and tourists alike. And just like Swedes, us Norwegians like to have "Fredagskos", our version of "Fredagsmys" with a good movie or a TV show to watch and maybe taco or pizza on the menu (the latter in my case every Friday) and on Saturday it's "Lördagsgodis" for the kids and the kids at heart in Sweden and in Norway, we also have "Lørdagsgodteri" as our equivalent to that. So many cultural similarities between Norway and Sweden, yet both countries have their own unique things as well, such as "fika" in Sweden and midsommar with their flowery pole they dance around. Cool video, I like the things you listed :)

oh you do?🤩 yeah, I'm yet to explore Norway sadly but I really want to because I've heard such great things. And Bergen is very high up on my list! as you say, its so interesting to dig into where the similarities are, but also to find out more what makes each country unique! Thanks for watching, so fun that you enjoyed it!!

Parental leave: It is actually 480 days PAID parental leave. You actually have MORE parental leave. From six month before birth, the pregnant one can take parental leave (without pay), and up to 18 months after birth both can take leave without pay. And then you have those 480 days after that. You have to read on how this work of course, but it is possible to be out from work for a long long time.

An other big thing about workplace here, most places do see each other as a big family. We all joke around, spend time togheter during the workday and after, we do basiclly create a small family within the work. Wich is amazing too but also to us swedes pretty important. Feeling welcomed and getting a feeling of connection is what makes a good workplace good. Wich sadly, isnt as big in many other countries where people just tend to see the collegues as just that. For exampel, I work a customer service centre, we are over 1000 employees on a few diffrent projects. If someone sits alone in the lunch room, they wont be sitting alone for long. Someone will either come and sit down with that person, or ask that person if they wanna join them at theirs. We dont have the same "I have my 5 friends I talk with, fuck everyone else." kind of mentality. And if someone were woundering, no this isnt just because its a "social" work. It was the same when I was at a moving company, factories, at Volvo, or whatever place ive been at. Always been the same kind of mentality at all my workplaces. Wich is great. Especially since I am a very "lonely" person. I dont socialize a lot. I rather stick to myself. But I get "forced" into the social life. Wich I kinda need :)

I actually prefer meeting my friends outside of my home. Usually for lunch or a fika. It is less work for all of us and less time to travel. Moreover, there is a natural end to the get-together. I also hate cleaning, so there's that. There a lot of single households in Sweden, and some live in quite small places. Making it far easier to meet down in the city centre.

After Work get togethers is quite a thing here too. My company has all kinds of activities you can join in, even an annual weekend retreat to Greece or Spain. Bosses in Sweden in general care about your wellbeing and expect that you tell them if anything is worrying or upsetting you. Most of my bosses have been women, perhaps that gives an extra dimension in the leadership.

I actually really like beeing outside as long as it´s not raining or snowing to much. as long as it is not raining or snowing it is good weather I think, whether it is sunny, cloudy or cold or hot does not matter much. Regarding the relationship between work / free time. I have a friend who lives in London, he told me that in England you do not go home before your closest boss goes home... do not know if it's true but that's what he said.
@JustaBritAbroad

that's kind of what I meant Martin! its really interesting to see how you guys seem to make the most of the weather in ways that wouldn't have even really crossed our minds! something we could definitely be learning from! and regarding what your friend in England said - I've heard that before too, but I don't know if its quite so common anymore🤔 its kind of a sign of an outdated company culture I'd say!

Low-income earners can not complain about 40 degree heat or -40 degrees or other weather such as floods or tropical storms. The companies do not care about the workers, we are sought after because we do not complain about the weather, therefore everyone wants Swedish labor because we do not complain like others do. I am becoming allergic on Scandinavians advertising their so called 'amazing' parental leave opportunities to the rest of the world not realizing that there are countries with far better parental leave conditions than in any Scandinavian country. Just an example, in my home country of Bulgaria there is 2 years of parental leave and not on the mother and/or the father can claim it but also any of the grandparents. Also in Czech Republic the parental leave can be extended up to 3 years.

The thing with Sweden's system is that you are guaranteed your job and receive money while on leave. In addition, parents can take paid time off to care for a sick child. Moreover, the parental leave is designed so both parents have time allocated to each of them. And those can't be transferred to the other parent.
