I absolutely love these z4 videos they just give me that feeling to jump in and take mine for a spin . The feel of them inside them is like no other. I have gtr and m4 but some days I just fancy that classic feeling that you get in these.
With regards to the memory seat, the reason it is manual when the ignition is on is for safety. If you are driving down the road and press a button by accident you might find yourself moving the seat to your wife’s position and getting squished against the steering wheel. When the ignition is off, BMW couldn’t care less if you get squished or not. 😂👍 another good vid mate, keep up the good work.
Yep, I was about to say the same. I think there have been cases in the US, of crashes (in other cars?) due to people hitting a memory button going along and not being able to steer!
You forgot the 'Guide me home lights' I think they are called. If you pull back on the headlight stalk with the ignition off the lights stay on for like 2/3 mins to help you see in the dark
On your keyfob if you hit the unlock button once and then hold it down again, the convertible top and windows will all go down together. We have a 2008 BMW Z4 also.
Yes! Your Z4 will do the same with the key in the door lock. Hold the key in the lock position and it will close the soft top and roll up the windows for you. Same goes for unlocking and opening the soft top.
Hey Joel, the last thing with memory function of the seat is a safety feature (just imagine randomly pressing it while driving and the seat moving backwards so you can not reach pedals...) Would not be nice :D
Don't know about pre face-lift but mines works with one press at key position 1. Great for getting to driving position and Bluetooth to connect while I get comfy and belt on.
If you open your driver door with the key. And hold the key in the open position.. The windows will lover a bit and the roof will open while you are just holding the key. You can reverse this by locking the door and keeping it in the locking position for a bit. I think that is pretty cool😎
Here is one I found out a bit after owning: The Z4 has a "sound generator" pipe from the intake into the cabin that allows your beautiful sounding 6 banger to be more loud. The pipe comes with plugs to muffle the sound unless they are removed. Removing the plugs makes your engine noise more pronounced in the cabin. I never new about the medical kit compartment! I am curious to find out if my American version has it. Update: booo! mine does not have it. I guess it is a European thing.
The memory seat position can be coded into your key as well as 3 more positions for 3 more people each with their personal key, so when you unlock the the car with your keyfob the seat moves into your personal position. I know this as it's in the car's manual, which also mentions the location of the first aid kit under the passenger seat...
Seems like a safety thing with the seat. If you were driving and dropped something down by the seat, you might accidently hit a button and have the seat move to the next position while on the road. If your parked up it not a major if the seat moves.
Another hidden feature: the stalk on the left of the steering column, if you move it up or down it makes the orange lights flash on the corners of the car. Found that by mistake - pretty cool feature. ...jokes 🤪
Hi Joel with regards to the medical kit storage you also have the rails underneath the driver's seat so you can either switch it over or buy another and have one under both seats so more storage 👍
What I like most is every time you say “needless to say” and then you go ahead and say it anyway lol why do you keep saying that if it is needless to say ?? 😂
The seats don’t auto move when you have the ignition on because if something fell out of your pocket and hit a position where you’re in an uncomfortable/unsafe position.. it’s basically a safety feature. :)
With the electric seat, it’s so that if you accidentally press the a memory button set for your shorter spouse while driving, you don’t get pushed into the steering wheel and cause an accident
wow never knew about the wend deflector and the Z thanks :)

Hi Joel, one addition to your video reg. DSC button - so DTC/DSC does come up when You press, or press and hold the button. However for SMG owners as myself, there is an additional feature called 'Acceleration assistant with SMG'. Basically selecting Sport mode, pressing the DSC button for 3 straight seconds, and then flooring the accelerator quickly (kick-down) will engage something launch controll-like behaviour... at least based on the user manual :) I've also just found it, having some smg issues and searching for information, but unfortunately for the E85 there are no videos on RU-vid to check if that's true. Will be good to get the car back and try it out - however if You have any friends with the SMG E85, it would worth to have a video on it ;)
Great vid as always, Joel! -First aid kits - is this Euro spec only? -Memory seats... I should really use these buttons finally! -Traction control... the car drives so much better when this is turned off!! I gotta check my Z boot to see about the deflector rack, though I don't even have a deflector. 😐
Joel - The seat feature, Its a safety feature. It's to stop you accidently changing your seat position entirely during driving, Hence it being press and hold with the ignition turned on :)
Hi Joel Have been watching your vids and didn't realize I had the first aid compartment I also didn't realize about the DTC button .I have installed Hood module to open and close from outside car .
Not sure if other ones do this but if you have fog lights like mine does and you turn them on, off then back on they switch from white to yellow. I guess yellow fog lights are supposed to make it easier to see in fog. Oh and if you replace the light bulb on the side under the badge with an led, it will turn on when unlocking and after the car is turned off it will stay on for a couple of minutes.
You might already know, but the seats are also tied to the key. I have 2 keys, one for me and one for the missus. If I unlock with my key the seat will move to my position, likewise if she uses hers to unlock it will move to her position.
Hi bro. I would like to offer you an idea. There is not a single video on youtube that compares 3 Generations of Z4. The E85 vs E89 vs E29. Not a single video. If you do it, you will be the first. Make it happen please.
I really want to make this happen before anyone else does. Would love to do a BOTB drag race with all generations. I have two lined up, just need a couple others (facelift E85 included)
The Z in the front wing. I see one more cool design. If you look att the BMW badge indicator it looks like the propeller and the "Z" becomes the wings for an attacking plane.
if the key is on, it means, you are in the seat. if a settings is too tight to you, you can not be squeezed, so you have to hold the button to get the memorized settings. it is a safety feature. for examle, if you have a short gf, who has a settings for herself, but you are tall and big, if you accidentaly press her button, the seat could push you too much forward.
I had owned my Z4 about 2 months when I found the medical kit under the seat. Fascinating little storage compartment. Not sure my care has the rack for the wind break and I have an after market wind break anyway
Hi Joel.. Do you or any of your contacts know a fix for the sticky steering problem on the Z4. BMW want +2K to replace this known problem. There are a number of ideas on forums but nothing concrete. Any help would be great...
... Your "Z" body line thing is way off. Look at the body lines; all the swoops and creases follow certain paths - A pillar, bumper lines, lower rocker, rear bumper. . Plus, the lines are also in the 128i/135i of similar vintage. It was a "Bangle" thing and most were not fans.
Recently purchased 2003 Z4 convertible with 45,500 original miles. Runs like a swiss watch, but needed two cup holders, new radio, tires, replaced all speakers, will be recovering the seats/door panels and installing a new lighted WindResistor. A fun ride indeed and a great car for SW Florida weather. Love the videos, watched them all.
Thank you for subscribing! Put the seat where you want it for the specific preset you’re choosing, press the red M button so that it lights up and then hit the preset button
watched you drive your dads z4 and it convinced me to buy a z4! thanks.. I bought a Z4 3.0i 2003 last night, the auto and trip tronic box in excellent condition! thanks for helping me decide lol
Joel, I have the 2006 Z4 3.0si roadster. It is left side drive here in CA. I do not have the medical supply compartment you show. My wind deflector is made of thick acrylic and does not appear to be removable. There is no mounting brackets inside top of boot for storage if it is removable. I do have the seat memory buttons and traction control adjustments you show. All around very good video. Keep them coming! Too bad about all that rain!!
Well. It all depends on your seating position. There’s a button to swap steering wheel from right to left based on your preference. Yeah ... hmmm. What a car.
Cheers Joel, didn't know about the memory seat button! I can see the Z, the 4 is a little harder to spot though love the videos - always nicely put together
Joel re memory function it’s like that from factory. This is so when your driving you don’t press for instance a small persons setting and get compressed into the wheel whilst driving and have an accident. That’s why it allows for small adjustments only when engines running; and memory settings when engines off. Hope this help you to understand why.
Awesome info Joel! Keep on posting please ! Are you able to demeonstarte how the BMW cover is used? Specifically the small square enclosure bag. I don’t see that its placed in the trunk when the cover is on and the two black straps are just placed over the rear trunk wall. I never saw the car with the cover in place…so, I’d like to use it correctly. Thanks👍🏻
Understandable of the medical kit storage; it is a german design car ( although not all built in Gemany) and in Gemany it is mandatory to have a medical kit in the car (hence the German tag on it) So there you are; out of the way as you lack storage space already but no reason to break the law there.
