What are some of the things that surprise Swedish people that move abroad? What are the main differences between their new country and Sweden? And what are some of the big culture shocks likely to face a Swede who moves to a new country? These are some of the questions we'll be answering in today's video, as we flip the whole concept of this channel on its head! Instead of looking at what its like for a foreigner to move to Sweden, you guys have been asking me to dive into what its like for Swedes who decide to move overseas!
Follow me on social media:

Here's the top 5 SURPRISES that I picked out for a Swede about to move to London in England for the first time:
1. Opening times are different - lots of shops in the UK are open a lot longer on Sundays than they are in Sweden... with the exception of food shops! If you need your groceries, make sure you've bought them before 4pm on Sundays, because all the supermarkets have to shut then according to law!
2. Wave goodbye to personal admin! - you've probably got quite comfy in a life with BankID, Swish and a personnummer that can help you to quickly and easily validate your identity. When you move to the UK, or most other countries for that matter, you'll realise how good you had it in Sweden with these life admin tools!
3. Finding an apartment is different - in Sweden, it can be really tough to find a new place to live, with queue tokens and years waiting to qualify to view a flat. Its not like that in London, or England for that matter, but be prepared to fly over and view some apartments for yourself. Don't hand over money over the phone without checking the place actually exists!
4. A whole new world of activities awaits! - don't be fooled, Brits don't spend every evening in the pub (well, not always anyway!). There's plenty of pop-up exhibitions, bars, events and activities to enjoy. Often for a time limited period. So get involved and make the most of it!
5. The tempo of life is different! - London's population is almost the same as the entire population of Sweden... so be prepared for a lot more hustle and bustle than you might be used to on even the busiest day in Stockholm!
All of the examples in this video came from real stories passed onto me by Swedish friends and colleagues who have lived abroad. But I'm sure there's plenty more that I could have shared in this video. So leave me a comment down below to let me know what surprised you when you first lived, studied or travelled outside of Sweden! I'd love to hear!

You asked, so I came through!🤩 As you may have noticed, lots of you lovely people who watch my videos are Swedes yourself, some of whom are interested in moving abroad - perhaps to my country, England! and I've had loads of questions about what a Swede should expect if they move to England😱 So today, I thought I'd dig into some of the biggest differences that my Swedish friends have pointed out to me since they moved abroad. Have you yourself emigrated from Sweden? If so, what are some of the differences you noticed after you made the move? Or if you're based in Sweden, what are some of the things I mentioned that you'd find particularly different or challenging about living in England? Can't wait to hear what you think! P.s. pray for us in the EURO/EM Semi Final tonight please!😅

thanks for the feedback Sina! you really should, London's a fantastic city. I'm a little bit biased, as its my closest big city back home, but I've always thought there was something a little bit special about it. Even better if you can enjoy it with friends though! You'll have to let me know if you go so I can give you some sightseeing tips!

Funny thing though about the "tempo" in London, I'm from Gothenburg and both me and my son thinks the tempo might be higher in London but the stress lvl is kind of sky rocketing in Stockholm most of the time. He was 11 when he visited London the first time and has since, been 3 times and he says that feeling of "skynda dig" or "spring" doesn't really go away. That said we still Love both cities. I can't really get over that Swish isn't a "thing" elsewhere... oh and BankId aswell. Makes stuff so smooth. :-) I mean my parets, who both are between 75-80, uses it all the time. :-) Oh, and ofcourse congratulations to a spot in the finals against Italy, first time, ever, I heard! :-D Good Luck!

You make an interesting point Zirie! About the fact that it might be rising in Stockholm as well - perhaps its just big city mentality? But I know what your son means, London certainly gives you the feeling that something is always happening and things take place at breakneck speed! I've only been to Stockholm for the day a handful of times though, so I've not really experienced that there yet, though I'm sure its similar! I agree with you though, I love both cities - and Gothenburg too. It really feels like a liveable city I think! And you're right, Swish is certainly very convenient! As I mentioned in the video, since bank transfer is super simple and instant in the UK, I think the need for a mobile number alternative never really arose in the same way as it did here in Sweden😅 that said, there are a few more mobile alternatives cropping up now, you can do it on Revolut for example. But I can understand why it comes as a shock to Swedes abroad that we don't all have it! Swish is very convenient!! And thank you about the football 🤩 I'm not someone who is usually super patriotic but I'm so pleased for the team that they made it to the final. Its more than we could have hoped for and so exciting for our country!

I've been in London so many times. One of my favorite cities to visit but now I have a question: What to do when I've visited all common turist places like The Towern, Tower Bridge, "The Eye" etc etc. What are the more uncommon places/things to visit there, in Your opinion? As soon as Covid has calmed down and travelling goes back to somewhat normal, I plan to go there again but I might want to discover new things...

The thing that caught me off guard when I first visited England (I actually did not go to London on my first trip...) was the tiiiiny sidewalks. Like seriously. You sometimes felt like you had to hug the building as you made your way down the street or you'd risk falling in to traffic. And forget if you meet someone wanting to go in the other direction. (A few years later I visited Moscow... and boy... you can walk ten people side by side on their sidewalks. Or drive two cars... or tanks.) Anyway. Just something that stuck with me from my first (but not last) visit to England.
@JustaBritAbroad

an interesting and very accurate observation Eva😅 unfortunately, we don't have a lot of space in England and there's certainly a lot of people, so its almost like to combat the need to build out we just made everthing smaller and squeezed it into the same space😆 I've not been to Moscow but it would be interesting to see how it compares after reading your comment!

I popped to the swimming baths here in London with my Swedish neighbour, and before I knew it he was stark naked taking a shower before getting in the pool. We Brits usually keep our swimming gear on while showering in public 🙈

hahaha good point Trevor😆 the Swedes love an excuse to get their clothes off😉 must have taken you by surprise though! wait until you go to the sauna with a group of them, then you'll get the shock of your life!
@robhobsweden
@robhobsweden 3 года назад
@@JustaBritAbroad It's a health and sanitation issue. Actually, public pools / "bath houses" in Sweden (if they've not changed it), you are "forced" to shower without anything on, before and after the visit to the pool (area). As well, you are likely prohibited to enter a public sauna with swimwear, for the same reason. Just be "HGGTG", and bring the towel in (to sit on)

That point about London being a Swedish city reminds me of here in Melbourne being the second biggest Greek city. It goes Athens, Melbourne, then the rest of Greece. It might not be true anymore, but it was a fun fact for a while.

The fourth largest city, really? So do a quarter of a million Swedes live in London? Uppsala (my town), which is Sweden's 4th city, has almost a quarter of a million inhabitants.

yep, that's what they say Krister! Apparently its almost 300,000 Swedes who live in London, but I'm not sure exactly how they draw the boundaries. Easier to find an apartment... If you have money though, right? 🤔 If you have to bid for a rental apartment, then it's always the person with the most money who will "win"...
@JustaBritAbroad
@JustaBritAbroad 3 года назад
not necessarily actually Sara! it can be expensive, particularly in London, but there's also some fairly cheap apartments - compared to Sweden prices at least😊 I'm not saying I'd necessarily want to live in some of the areas those apartments are based😅 but the starting rent is quite comparable! Funnily enough, I actually paid more in Sweden for my first rental than I did in England! but that said, although there's a lot more options of places to live, they also go very quickly because of the interest and demand. And on the point about bidding, it sort of depends actually. Everyone makes a bid and then the owner can choose what they want to accept, but they don't always go for the person that offered the most. Sometimes its who can move in quickest, or if they got a good impression of the family, for example. But you make a good point, thata can be a problem sometimes unfortunately! Its actually quite hard to find a fair way of doing it isn't it? Because you have a similar but different problem with the queue system. Its always the people that have lived in a town - or whose parents registered them as soon as they could - that have the advantage. Its a tough conundrum to solve!
@attesmatte
@attesmatte 3 года назад
@@JustaBritAbroad Yeah, it's difficult... Some places like smaller municipalities sometimes let people moving in from another area jump the queue if they can show a proof of employment. 👍 I still think that apartments that are owned by the municipality should have a completely unbiased queue system. I can easily see heavy segregation happen otherwise.
@JustaBritAbroad
@JustaBritAbroad 3 года назад
@@attesmatte oh really? I've not heard of that before, how interesting! makes a lot of sense though, because otherwise you're always favouring people who got in the line first. which in theory is a good system to have, but doesn't always work out so great in practise if its the people whose parents were on the ball and knew where they'd be living 10 years in advance who always get the opportunity to bid for the places
