Probably none at all, cuz I wanna keep it low cost and I'm still 14 and I had already spent more then 1k aud on bikes stuff, and at summer I surf and stay in the water more, so I do more cycling at winter
Temperature sensor have come a long way! Back when I was a hazardous materials first responder we had to swallow a sensor for the command unit to monitor us.
One of TdF habits I would like to pick up: Free swag. And I’m not talking water bottles. Any bike over €10000 will do. Reserve the right to crash it, trash it, and get a replacement.
Fair. I would like to have access to world-class physiotherapists, coaches, dietitians, cooks and doctors. It wouldn't turn me into an athlete, but it would be an improvement.
I met Connor briefly on Saturday , with a. High 5 , my partner mocked me for hours after saying I was star struck , until she spotted her favourite Bath Rugby player, and she then went to pieces 😂
I wonder how many companies package skinny tires with their bikes to achieve a lower advertised weight? Granted, the savings would be low… but the “gram wars” are part of the marketing for certain bikes.
@@paulgrimshaw8334 Unless you race, the weight savings are pretty unimportant; but the whole industry is performance focused - you're average rider simply doesn't care.
Hi Team GCN! I love both the GCN Show and GCN Tech Show and look forward to new episodes every week. I was wondering if you know how many of the viewers view both shows and how many are "unique"? I've noticed that the two shows cover kind of the same topics (in the Hot Tech and Cycling Shorts). If you watch both shows you kind of get the same items twice. Of course, if the viewers group is completely different this doesn't matter. However, if there are many like me, that watch them both you might consider to not cover the same news twice.
I've got a club foot and have been avoiding custom insoles for years. Reconsidered a few weeks ago. Appointment is tomorrow, I hope they're as good as you say 🦶🔥
When are we going to get live heart rate, power and speed data in a dashboard? I'd say allow any sensor (even live glucose monitors) bit whatever they have has to be shared... ie a pro decides to go without power meter, then doesn't have to display it. How much fun would it be to see all the data!
+1 for stopping the cycle computer after a crash. My 300km ride was flagged by strava because of a 60mph ambulance ride after the audax was rudely halted by a deer related incident.
Have you all reviewed the Infinity saddle that's made over here in LA....looks and feels great from the few riders on this year's AIDS Lifecycle ride that were using them. Very comfortable and takes the pressure off your sir bones and pressure off your sensitive area between your legs. They are designed by a retired chiropractor and current bike fitter...but they aren't cheap...between $300-500 USD depending on model.
The bags on the Diverge are Fjälllräven. I have the saddle bag. These were made in collaboration with Specialized, but I don’t think they make them anymore.
I see Wahoo finally got their act together and redesigned their crap Hr strap. I can't tell you how many Wahoo straps I threw out due to moisture leaking into the battery compartment and rotting out the inside. It was a no brainer to dispose of the coin cel battery for a chargeable battery that is completely sealed from sweat.
I'm interested in how the smart trainers can increase the resistance to simulate climbing hills....do you need to be on a direct drive trainer or can a wheel on trainer work.
Electromagnetic Resistance. ELI5: Magnets attract metal things. The stronger the magnet the stronger the attraction. You can make an "electric magnet" by pass a current through a coil of wire. Since using electricity to make the magnet, you can use electronics to control them. So if the program says you are going up a hill, it adds more current to the coil of wire to make it harder. Of, course it is a bit more complicated than that.....but that is the crux of it.
Watching this while I sit in an ice bath, before I launch on ride. Remember, the discomfort makes you let go of your nonsense, helps with healing, helps with inflammation, gives you all the dopamine of coke or meth with no crash, just health.
I know you guys talk about wax chains, silca is your sponsor, a lot and everyone keeps pushing it, yada yada yada. Well the answer is, cause it's fucking good. I have put 13,000km on my waxed chain and it's just starting to get get close to being worn and time for change.
I ride in a place that hits 36C and 80%+ humidity in the summer. Not a lot of shade. Road or gravel, 60-180 minutes. You have to stuff up pretty badly to overheat. I’m talking about truly overheating, not free sweating. Dress for the heat. Padded shorts but everything else mesh and breathable. Short sleeves or no sleeves. Light on the sunscreen… it traps heat. Push hydration… like a litre of low sugar fluids an hour. Insulated bottles… or freeze one bottle for enjoying mid distance. Don’t forget electrolytes. A bladder pack and drinking tube helps take in fluids incrementally. Pace yourself and you’ll be fine.
Bike fit.... Yeah, sure. IF you can find a fitter who knows anything at all about what they are doing... Suffice to say, I have had 3 fits and have never gotten anything close to a proper fit from any of them.... Just bad luck, I guess but that is a sore subject for me...
somehow this has turned into even more of an ad then it was before. sad to see you just rattle off marketing pointers instead of genuine personal preference :(
GCN promoting industry fluff hype - as usual. Try to be original - do not sell your soul for a buck. Wide tyres are better, waxing the chain is better ----get back to the real world.
I have to say that both are true, though for different reasons. Wide tires are smoother running, which improves the ride experience and speed over rougher roads. Such roads are more the norm than the exception. Waxing chains is hands-down a winner. It’s less expensive, lasts longer, and more economical due to reduced chain wear. I’m on my 10th chain waxing on a 500g bag of wax that cost less than $50. I’ll probably get 15 chain waxing out of the bag. My chains haven’t recorded any wear… none… according to my chain checker. And I’m not having to spend up to 20 minutes clearing my chains of road grit. Don’t try it for yourself. I want the demand for chain wax to be low to keep prices low and supply high.
So many of your recommendations are for the top 5% of money spenders and not for the "normal" amateur cyclist (i.e.: Temperature sensors for 250 dollars and custom made shoes/insoles!!!)
I'm with you on the temperature sensors; although these things can be mentioned and everybody is free to chose if to spend money on that, it surely is quite annoying for most viewers to watch all that stuff so regularly... Main content should be for majority of viewers! With the insoles I disagree though, cause not every insole is really custom made for hundreds of dollars, the main takeaway is that you should maybe look into getting different insoles for your feet, cause everyone is so different. There are good priced ones you can cut into shape and add inserts to different regions to further shape it to match the feet. And that really is worth investing... Money spent on a decent insole is much more reasonable than exchanging your alloy handlebars to some carbon ones for example or buying expensive aero jerseys when they actually dont make you more comfy and efficient
lol, out of all the snake oil the bike industry hucks, you choose the one thing that is a legit fundamental. Like bikefits don't even need to be professionally done. It is just matching frame, stem, crank, seatpost, etc. in way that fits your body. Not everyone of the same height has the same proportions so ready-made sizing can only do so much. If you only do shorter rides or have the most average body around then you can skip this step, but if you do many long rides, you owe it to yourself to have your bike fitted to you. You can do it yourself with some studying. Next you will say putting tires on your bike is "snakeoil."
Bike fit is literally the biggest impact on how you ride a bike, it's the furthest thing away from snake oil you can get. If you want snake oil, ceramic bearings are pretty close for 99% of riders.
I don’t know what happened but the audio is not what is ‘normal’ for the videos. Did discovery take the mics when they left? Hope the change of ownership is awesome for you all!! Nice job on content
everybody says "get a bike fit" - and yes, when you have a bike fitter who really knows his staff it's a good thing. But their is the problem: there are so many people doing bike fitting who blindly follow either a dogma or a software - which both does not help in many cases. Best example is an article in a big German cycling magazine some years ago where they presented the same rider with the same bike to different bike fitters and most of them changed his position massively... but some in one direction and some in the exact opposite direction, some didn't do significant changes at all. That does not give much confidence that any bike fitter will get me better on my bike than the position I find in almost 40 years of cycling. I don't want to fly to Australia (from Germany...) to Neill Stanbury and I really don't trust a bike fitter in my area. Sad but true...
Yeah, I'm not entirely sure about the value. If I have no pains, problems etc. I only wonder in terms of "you could be getting extra performance if you did this" I suspect a lot of the industry is around people that barely end up riding their bikes, don't/don't know how to make minor adjustments themselves (saddle, cleats, levers etc).
@@cmarnold78Agree. Know many people who take their bikes in to have the most ridiculously easy things done… like barrel adjusters. Many others ignore servicing and look forward to their next bike because “mine isn’t working like it did”. Maybe those oiled bearings are feeling kinda crunchy after the bike has sat in the shed for a decade between three rides a year? LOL.
Wider tires make most sense with wide inner rims. A 28mm tire on 25mm inner rim will be roughly 32mm wide and ride a lot smoother and just as fast compared to the same tire on a 15c old style alloy rim. Where it will sit only 26mm wide, measured. But even if you don't want to or can't (rim brake bike) run a new wide rim, it makes sense to spend the money on two wider tires nonetheless. Just not as dramatic of an impact.
9:17 if only Curve could stop their bread-and-butter road bikes breaking: I've seen 3 with cracks around their seat tube at the BB in my workshop in the last couple of years, and heard tales of a dozen more. Doesn't really inspire confidence in a new model of bike that's designed to ride on corrugations all day, duzzit? Perhaps that's why you shouldn't offshore your production to a factory where you don't have direct oversight of the production process, hey? I've ridden Lynskeys for 20 years, and have never regretted my choice. (US designed, US made, not like Curve: Australian designed, Chinese made).
#askgcntech I have always been a Shimano user, last summer I got a new Merida reactor with SRAM etap 12speed and have been loving it. I have a TT bike that is basically my turbo trainer bike, with 11speed 105 11-32 cassette on, but sometimes id like to be more relaxed and use my road bike - can I use my sram groupset on the Shimano cassette on the turbo trainer? I appreciate the range of gears will be wrong? Will it damage my chain and rear derailleur?
Conor's so tall when he rode off on the Titanosaur bike IT ACTUALLY LOOKED NORMAL! I know it's carbon wheels and all, but does he have to change his fitness due to the new circumference of the 36" wheels? That's a lot of rubber for those tires. I can't wait to see how he rides on those new tires on a separate video soon. Have fun and be safe, Conor!
Science suggests that the bigger heavier wheels take more energy to get moving. However once in motion they have greater inertia and will keep their speed better than a 700c or 29" wheel (assuming that the aero drag and rolling resistance characteristics are identical or negligible). You would only need a short burst of higher power to get them started, something larger riders are naturally more capable of.
Loved this week's show! Manon and Conor really talked about things they found interesting like the Titanosaur or the preferences! I really love Alex' and Ollie's nerdy style but this was quite authentic in their own way! Keep it up and all the best for your future in freedom at last. ;)
"It's got a gold chain. It'. Got. A. Gold. Chain. IT'S GOT A GOLD CHAIN!" Manon left hanging like a dropped chain. Come on, Conor, take a hint, as slow in the studio as you are on a bikepacking trip!
This "really large" grave bike from Curve make it where it's only a matter of time where you start seeing full-suspension gravel bikes. Essentially we're going to get drop bar XC bikes soon. Not that it's a bad thing, but the comfort components is definitely there. We already see it a little bit with front-sus and suspension seatposts, but for "extreme" cross-country backpacking....full-sus gravel bikes will come.
SUPERNICE Bike Vault!!!!!!!!! Love the energy, and thank you to Conor and Manon for giving those Supernice bikes the honor they deserve!!! We don't care about level cranks or the gear as long as the chain is on the big dawg, baby!!
The music John Tesh performed for his '80s Tour coverage is probably what motivated Greg to greatness and glory. So that's what I'd like, John Tesh Tour music in the background as I climb the Alps and look over my shoulder and enjoy nothing but scenery. Ain't nobody keeping up with me. 😀
Changed my race bike for a canyon endurace because of feeling uncomfortable after an hour BEST thing I have ever done im so comfortable and so much faster
I love rechargeable hr monitors. Using a cheapie currently because I could not find a polar etc at the time. Will buy the wahoo when the current one fails.

Interesting how much the opinion on waxing chains have changed since not having muc-off as a sponsor. It was actually muc-off that convinced me to go to waxing 6 years ago as their 'lube' attracted so much dirt and grit that I knew there had to be a better solution. As for more expensive I paid about $5 canadian for 6+ years of wax from the grocery store along with a $15 Amazon slow cooker I've more than broken even. I've changed the wax completely once and still have enough for another change so I'm well ahead on costs considering I've been waxing chains for my 3 road bikes, my fat bike, my gravel bike as well as the bike on my smart trainer. I also appreciate that cleaning the bike takes less than 1/4 the time and I can touch and replace my chain without getting any grease or oil on my hands or anything else
What is going on with the production quality of GCN Tech this episode would looks like it was made in my garden shed, nothing due to presenters who are always great.
"the pro's use them, so they have to be good"... uh no; this general idea needs to die, the normal person should never be trying to copy what professional athletes are doing.
Did you miss the big caveat in the beginning that there are many things we shouldn't copy from the pros? Your criticism missed all the nuance from their discussion.
So where is the cooling mechanism in your thumbnail? Congratulations!!! Every time I see a vid from GCN Tech I will be sure to take the time to downvote...
Cost cutting already with the stupid guys getting fired by the looks of it. who set the studio up. Camera is squint, lighting uneven, sound a bit shit. Connor looks ill.
