I wanted to take the time to talk through 5 things that I feel like everyone interested in buying this bike should know about, but nobody is really talking about.
I know, this video is a bit on the long side and I apologize for that. I wanted to be sure to provide thorough context for each of the things I discuss. I’ll work on getting videos shorter in the future.
For now, feel free to watch section by section at your convenience or skip right to the section most important to you.

stumbled upon on your video while i was researching the "bad sides" of the 450ss/sr. Good points on the parts availability and longevity of this bike. Totally agree also with how these TFT displays last over time specially ones that offers comprehensive bluetooth connectivities (i.e., navigation, music, phone calls) with how all these phone companies spit one new model after another + constant software updates on all models alike. Sure, it's understandable for mc manufacturers to offer colorful TFTs on their dash but this one from CFMOTO caught my eye due to that 'special' bluetooth options. Personally, i like what they offer in terms of tech but I still question how these would last. I would turn a blind eye to this types of 'issues' but this was one of the things that got me even watching reviews of the 450ss/sr in the first place. Already got my mind full of doubts for the engine and its related parts' reliability, now the software-side adds another headache 😂 probably I'll wait for other bike brands to have this added features for bluetooth connectivity if they added OTA updates or thru bluetooth updates (like how smart watches does it). Its low price + bomb of a spec sheet are tempting, but all other factors cancels these out once you consider to have this bike for a long time (and resell values of CFMOTOs are relatively low compared to other well-established brands, so, another on the list 😂😂)

FILTERS and SHIMS - Oil and air filters are contracted out. Since the OEM oil filter costs $17+tax+shipping, it'd be worthwhile to find an aftermarket substitute for half the price. In many filter reviews, WIX is rated highly, and WIX has a broad range of sizes to fit most vehicles without the marketing costs of K&N, STP, etc. Just match the outer dimensions, gasket size, and the screw-on threads of the equivalent WIX filter and use that. You could find a Japanese OEM filter that WIX makes a substitute for, and go with the WIX equivalent. Similar for valve adjustment shims. Since they differ just in outer dimensions, use an equivalently sized shim sold for a common Japanese bike.

Fair points tbh, especially the availability of parts in general and planning ahead. Good start to your channel 😊 I have been thinking about purchasing this bike well before it arrived in the US. All the things you discussed, I discovered during my research. So your video confirmed my findings. However I think the bike offers good value for performance and features. One issue which you didn’t mention is resale value. Everyone is not sold on Chinese made motorcycles. Hopefully Cfmoto can overcome that perception. After WWII Americans felt the same about Japanese motorcycles. Now we rave about them. 😅
@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
I'm glad we're aligned! You're right, I didn't mention the resale value, but that is def a big drawback to all CFmoto products right now for sure. Luckily, they are priced very well right now, but I'll be curious to see how many are listed in the next 12-24 months and how well they move at used prices. I'm thinking if you can recoup 3,000-3,500 bucks people should be happy. Anything more, people will just go buy new. Anything less and it's going to feel like you're getting bent over LOL

I live in greece and chinese bikes have taken over the past 3 years and their resale prices have surprisingly stayed high. The 450sr (its called the sr here) is brand new (for 6.300€) and there are no used ones but other chinese bikes like zontes 125cc new 3.000€ sell for 2.300 used all day for 22||21 models with some as high as 2.500 for an early 23 model while a competitor mt125 is about 5.000 new and sells for 3.800. So they keep their price for the first 3-4 years only loosing a lot of value after that or with very high miles which affects japanese bikes less. Hope this helps even if I'm referencing a different market👍🏻

Let me know what you end up buying! Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either bike. If having that name Kawasaki offers you piece of mind that the bike should last a long time, and you really want an abundance of aftermarket support available right away, grab yourself a N400 (the KRT edition is my fav). But, if you're looking for something more unique, that sounds way better, and will likely have more aftermarket over the next year or so, get yourself the CFM450SS and I don't think you'll regret it!

I have a suggestion for a video. Can you go into chain tension? I bought my daughter a 300ss for her first bike and im hopefully picking up my 450 today. I noticed on the 300 the tension is correct as far as measurement, but when holding any speedthe top of the chain vibrates up and down by about 1/2" - 3/4". When accelerating, it pretty much smooth. Also, when you are off the bike and watching someone go by, you can hear the chain especially when decelerating. It soynds like a bicycle with someone spinning the pedals backward, like a clicking or ratcheting sound. Not sure if it needs to be tightened or loosened. Originally the tension was at around 1.4" and i titghtened it to 1.1" It sounds better on acceleration but still the same everywhere else
@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
Did you end up picking up the 450SS for yourself?? As far as your daughter's bike, I can see how that would be frustrating and concerning for sure. Have you ensured the rear wheel is straight, by checking that the notches on the tensioners (both sides of the wheel) are even? A wheel that is not straight could def cause some unusual chain movement and noises. I'll do a bit of research regarding the chain tension on these bikes and see if I can get a video out...Maybe some folks will find it helpful!

I just got my bike and I’m around 100 miles already put on it, and sometimes I smell this smell. It’s almost like burning or coolant or something idk if it’s just the bike getting too hot, or if it’s still in its break in phase that it makes the smell
@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
Hope you’re enjoying the bike! Odd smells will always cause a little bit of anxiety that’s for sure. This could be a couple of things: 1 - a lot of times manufacturers will put some type of oil on things like the exhaust pipes to ensure they don’t develop rust while traveling in crates. When you have a brand new bike, you may smell some of that burning off. 2 - coolant typically has a pretty distinct smell to it. If your dealership accidentally put a little too much coolant in the reservoir, it could be overflowing. If you look in the opening of your right fairing (brake lever side), you’ll see a small black tube. That’s the overflow for the coolant. When it runs out of there, it will just drop down and could hit the exhaust causing it to burn and create a smell. Check to see if you have any coolant dripping out. 3- lastly, just heat in general can cause things to smell. I would give it through the break in period to see if the smells die down a bit before you worry. If still present after break in, give your dealer a call and see if they can do a look over.
@robroos8651
@robroos8651 Год назад
I have seen some videos on this. There is a coolant overflow pipe on the right-hand side (hidden under the fairing) you can get coolant dripping. It's not bad but if you are worried check with your dealer. Also I have 700km (430miles) and I still smell things and hear things that are nothing more than getting used to a bike I don't know much about. 😂 at the moment I swear I smell supper glue after a 30min ride 😀

@@robroos8651 I did my initial oil change a couple of weeks ago, when the bike had around 600 miles on it. At the same time I adjusted my chain tension, the clutch cable tension and the gear shifter positioning. The first time I took the bike out after doing all of those things everything felt more in synch I guess I could say. I’m not sure that it was one of those things more so than a combination of just the general upkeep/maintenance, but 200 miles after doing those things the bike, in my opinion, feels better than it did the day I brought it home.

@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
Yup, I’m with you. However, there aren’t yet cross references available for these filters. So if someone wanted to pick up a K&N for example, they would have to take the filter with them and manually compare to see which might work. Doesnt an exhaust void the warranty? Do you put the stock exhaust back on before servicing ?
@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
Well I do not currently have an aftermarket exhaust, but if I did, I may call my dealer and inquire with them before I took it in for any servicing work that may need to be done. Some manufacturers will, while others will not void a warranty simply due to a slip on exhaust.
@phokeene9123
@phokeene9123 Год назад
@NoobTubeMoto so I just bought my 450 Saturday. I asked them about it and they said they don't know. It's a touchy subject. Apparently anything that enhances the performance is a void. Which a slip on doesn't really do that. But in the manuel, it also states aftermarket parts voids the warranty. So it is weird. After my 1st service, I'll most likely get a slip on and if I service it again with the dealer, I'll put the stock back on

@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
Totally get that! Unfortunately, I’m not aware of anything out there currently that would help you add more power to this bike. You can add a slip-on exhaust in hopes that it allows better air flow out of the exhaust, but that alone doesn’t guarantee any power gains. We’ll need to continue waiting for ECU flashes, full exhaust systems, air intakes and O2 deletes to be more readily available.

@CharlieDTE
@CharlieDTE Год назад
Nope, you’re not missing anything. There just isn’t a cross reference list to other manufacturers filters yet. You would have to take the filter with you and match it up. Which, don’t get me wrong can def. Be done, but most people right now are likely just going to want to take the easy option. I’m sure in the upcoming months there will be cross references available and we’ll all be happy!

I’ve seen K&N and other cheap oil filters come apart on desmoquattro and testastretta engines. You usually find the filter material bound up in the gauze filter. I’m not sure what’s causing this, but I’ve never seen this issue with the factory Ducati oil filters. I’m tempted to cut them apart and compare the internals.

I have the Mustard Bikes fender eliminator installed (I have a video doing the install) and agree with your comments. The fit, finish and quality is fantastic. I've also been in contact with the owner of Verex and have had personal sound clip videos sent to me. It does seem like it would sound good, but I am nervous to spend nearly $600 on the exhaust by the time I get it shipped to the states and not love it. As for the bike, yup. This is a nebula black bike (the white/black/blue) version, but I removed all of the factory red accents and replaced them with official CFmoto red ones (that come on the Zircon black version), but also added a couple of additional accent pieces. Like it?!

I'm sure it may be a bit on the small side depending on what you're used to. This bike only weighs about 375 pounds, and was likely designed to be a track bike, so it makes since that they might keep it on the "small side". However, in my opinion when compared to a Ninja 400, this bike actually feels a bit larger to me, closer to the feeling of a KTM RC390.
