Hi Alyssa, I know it might sound unprobable since you target female audience but I'm a guy and I like to watch your videos. Having enough of '10 items you need to have in your closet' or 'items you need to get rid of in 2023 immediately' videos it is a relief to hear from you. Basically all you say can be applied both to female and male fashion since you talk more of philosophy of style. Content about findng your three words was especially insightful and 'shop your closet' series eye opening. And you have a soothing voice and attitude, listening to you always brings good mood and vibes.
wow thank you so much for sharing this. I do feel like a lot of these principles can be applied to all closets and it is so encouraging to hear you validate this. Have a great week!
I'd only add one other point: kindness to yourself however you present on any day. Sometimes the closet feels like a foe because we're hard on ourselves, but being kind enough to love ourselves in any moment and let that into our closet so we love our outfits or our bodies on those not 10/10 days helps so much
I find the older I get, the less I care about what others think about the way I dress and look. I don’t mean that in a negative way, but if I feel good, yet it doesn’t quite fit the fashion of the moment… I really just don’t care because I like and most importantly I’m comfortable and that is so important to me - thanks for another great videos :)
I just did some shopping for the first time in a while. I finally got some new bras since my old ones were completely shot. I found a boutique bra shop about 2 hours away from me, so I had a self-care day and went and got fitted. All of my clothes feel brand new now that I’m finally wearing bras that fit and don’t have busted elastic sticking out. It’s amazing what great undergarments can do. Don’t need a ton of them, but some good ones will go a long way!
We all want to look and feel amazing. Here is my top tip. The next time you feel the urge to go out clothes shopping, and you know you don't really need any more clothes, stay in and pamper yourself instead. Do some or all of the following'................... Put on some relaxing music, light some candles, take a long leisurely bath or shower, wash your hair and take the time to style it, put on some make-up, a spritz of perfume, do your nails, then pick an outfit from your wardrobe that you love and put it on. I guarantee you will look and most importantly feel a million dollars. It is that feeling that we are actually after. You won't need to spend any money to get this amazing feeling as you likely already have the products needed, but may have in the past, lacked the time to put them to good use. Make the time. It is cheaper than buying new clothes and likely less time and more pleasureable than trawling around the shops. I am mid 50's and a couple of years ago I remembered how good it used to feel in my 20's getting ready for a night out. I didn't have many clothes, but I had the time on a Saturday late afternoon to get ready, have a bath, do my hair and make-up etc. I probably only had 2 going out outfits, as did my friends, but always felt amazing. For me, regularly spending time on the whole ritual of grooming and getting dressed properly is where its at.
I definitely do the theme for a week - no jeans, feminine/masculine mix, pattern etc. I did try skirts/dresses week, but I really struggled, so that just taught me more about my personal style!
My biggest struggle is to look good just for myself. I’ve been working from home for almost a decade and leggings/ sweatpants became my second skin. But even when I worked in the office, the minute I got home my makeup, my bra, nice shoes…gone! I totally get the “ look better feel better” principle but yet all my nice pieces sit in the closet awaiting to be seen by others. I agree ball gown on Tuesday sounds bit much. Monday then? 🤔
This year I decided to create a capsule for each of the four seasons, with 25 to 30 pieces. Some of the pieces I reuse for each season, (like my jeans and a couple of my sweaters). I am enjoying the creativity that I find with limiting my options and keeping them within a color palette where most things go together.
Your creative ways to style clothing is very unique. I have been showing more of my skin, but not my midriff at the age of 66. There is only so much I am openminded about. This video was very thought provoking and helpful.
I will occasionally hit a garage sale. Once in a while ill have great luck. Friday, I found 2 blouses, for 2 dollars each. One was a silk blouse from chicos, and the other a Ralph Lauren silk animal print blouse. Perfect condition. No hanging threads. No stains. Never pass up a Ralph Lauren's.
I’d add health/self care to this list. If you can eat well and exercise even a little you’ll feel better in everything ❤️ Giving this advice to myself right now too!
Just went to the new Chanel exhibit at the V&A. She was all about freedom of expression within constraint and the limitations of the time. I never realised that she was why we consider beige, black and white to be chic.
I live in the UK, didn't know that was on. I'm 2hrs away from the V&A so I feel a trip up to London coming on. Thanks for your comment. UPDATE - Just went to the websire - Darnit - all sold out.
I'm still healing from being laughed at for dressing outside the norm when I was younger, and for being raised in a lot of hand-me-downs. But I was really creative with my clothes! Your videos are really validating!
Yes , I have always said styling my outfits is my creative outlet. I am not a minimalist and never will be, but I am definitely buying less with redoing my closet due to weight loss. My father passed when I was just 13 and his biggest legacy was impressing upon me the concept of being my own best friend. My friend calls it my safety net! Great Video!
I'm feeling myself slip into the Raincouver fall/winter style rut already... so easy to just throw on jeans, a hoodie, and the same rain coat I always wear. Going to give myself some constraints and challenge myself to wear more of my nicer sweaters and maybe even some of my summer pieces with warm tights underneath!! Thanks for the reminder Alyssa!
Excellent video! I think about the late Little Edie Beale as the originator of working with what you got to make fashion, or “costumes” as she called them. Another idea for updating a wardrobe at little cost is upcycling existing items that you don’t wear anymore. If you can sew, or someone in your life can sew, this can extends the life of the garment and keep it out of the landfill longer.
Thank you for this! My stuff also needs to be organized a little better. Just went through some jewelry and made use of an old cardboard tea box that I painted and decorated with cut out images from old greeting cards. Came out pretty cute, I am very proud of myself! 😀🩷
Oh yes, paralyzed by analysis. I am there. I’ve been thinking a lot about creativity, and I wonder if another good word to pair with it is curiosity. That curiosity that we have as children. To cultivate it and keep it in our lives. Also, just loving your pearl and gold earrings from MV (I think)… so pretty on you.
Absolutely love your cat! I watch your videos to keep me from acquiring more but I want a kitty like yours. (I used to have one that color.) Thank you!
I remember you doing a "no denim" challenge some years ago. And, I agree about putting some sort of parameters/boundaries/constraints on our wardrobes to help stimulate creativity. I find that with seasonal changes, I tend to forget how I managed to put together creative fun outfits the last time I was dressing for cold weather/warm weather, etc. So, it's a good idea to muse about how many ways can I wear these three sweaters? To get the most out of what I have.
Absolutely love all you have specified. I love your point of view. But that also comes from my background, not having lived in consumeristic society (Croatia was a country where you could get clothes if someone sew them for you). So I always question my purchases well. But I can understand this concept being new to lot of people. Anyhow...as always, love all the points in this video.❤
Such a great video, Alyssa! And I also have to say, you look so beautiful. It really shows that you’re following your own advice & taking care of yourself. Beauty from the inside out, which encourages me! Hugs!! 🤗
Absolutely love what you said about creativity! Too many people have such a fixed/ judgey mindset about it. I think everyone is creative and it's unique and different
Oh Bella!!! I love everything about this video. I have a ton of clothes, shoes, handbags, hats, belts, scarves & jewelry. I am throughly enjoying playing in my closet, getting rid of items and learning to wear items differently. I can't wait to to try the Canadian Tuxedo XOXO with so many different pair of shoes :) Thank you for introducing me to slowwwww fashion!!
Another great video! Thanks for sharing these ideas. There's so much truth here, and I think that these are aspects that we all struggle with sometimes.
After listening to your podcast (Sustain this!) about monetization I thought to myself: 'I wish she did subscription-based content' - And 2 weeks later you come out with your program, well done! I'm especially looking forward to watching the shop your closet events because I never had time for those because of work ❤
oh my gosh thank you!! I really hope you find it helpful and a value-add, especially the live events.Note they are edited to a little over an hour but it's still a good way to see it all! Thank you so much for your support! xo
I need to force myself to be creative, otherwise, I’ll go for convenient and boring. Part of this stems from the fact that my style is somewhat minimalist (not in the avant-garde way), and I can be a lazy dresser, particularly when I’m just running errands in the neighborhood. I have to add that the red shirt looks fantastic on you.😊
Hello. I have just discovered your channel and have subscribed. This was just lovely to hear. I love the ideas of slow fashion, shopping your closet and taking care of yourself, so I'm sure I'll enjoy the rest of your videos. Love your style!😊
Love your videos so much and always get something from them- loving the podcast as well🙏I'm going to challenge myself starting today by taking out my 'go tos'!🤩
Really exciting episode, Alyssa. The idea of limitations does sound like a great exercise though it does sound opposite. I will treat myself to a monthly membership in December for my birthday. (Still on a “student” budget these days. I have reframed the descriptor to @student” because it has a more optimistic Felicity like vibe…have a fabulous week! Xo Joanne
As a minimalist, I am inspired by the idea that, apparently when Coco Chanel died, there were only 3 outfits in her wardrobe. In my mind I can see three Chanel suits hanging there, each with a co-ordinating under blouse or thin sweater. Chanel was also a minimalist - after all she came up with the Little Black Dress. Her three outfits could be a weeks worth of clothes if you wore the blouse and sweater twice in a week, or handwashed them after each wear. Whilst 3 outfits for a week is extreme, I think 7 is plenty. I think a great challenge for everyone would be to create 7 everday outfits for the season ahead. I started to do it this winter, but have found i actually only need 4-5 outfits as some can be worn twice eg a sweater and jeans. The secret is I also have 7 long sleeve t-shirts I wear under them , which I put on clean on every day. A couple of my outfits are easy to dress up with accessories and wear out to dinner with my husband, I also have a separate outfit for gardening/housework, and a party dress for Xmas. I don't need more than that.
Alyssa, I love your style your advice I am also Italian my dad was born in Italy and my parents met and married in Italy. I love all your videos but especially love the ones with the Italian streets, cobblestones streets, I miss my parents they passed away a few years ago, I know that is not what your video was about and am working on less consumption, trying to find my style. I am going to turn 60 this year and am working on being the best me. Lost 11lbs to date and goal is 20-25 lbs, sorry this is long but I have been watching your you tube channel for years and you have show grace, confidence and have the most amazing style. I love that black faux leather dress in your last clip is it the ZARA one? I am looking second hand. Thanks again in advance Ciao.
Can you advise how to care the woolen pashmina sweaters and jackets? Dry cleaning turns ut be very expensive. What is an easy and cost-eefective way to clean woolen clothes?
I always wash them on a delicate cycle, cold water, with Eucalan, or other detergent for wool. Minimum spin speed. Or, wash by hand in tepid water, minimum agitation and wringing. Hag to dry always. I do this to my wool coats, blazers, sweaters etc
Great points to remember. I really enjoy your videos and have implemented some of the principles you talk about. It’s a work in progress. 😃 Can you please suggest where to get a nice cashmere sweater? I remember you talked about this in your previous videos but I couldn’t find it.
Hi Alyssa! I’ve just your last podcast on Sustain This and I’d like to comment something about it. I’d love to know from you guys, what do you think of the “cons” of buying second hand. I had some really bad experiences that I think people doesn’t even imagine that those things happens. 😢 for example: I bought a vintage chanel and the authenticity card came from a YSL instead of the Chanel’s ones and it made me sell back to the previous second hand shop bc I couldn’t be able to sell to anyone else without the authenticity card. Another terrible experience I had when I bought a 7k jewelry and didn’t receive!!! I had to prosecute the store and I got me almost a year to receive it back. Another one when I sold 2 Diors to a luxury reseller and didn’t receive the money, also had to prosecute them to receive moths later. I bought a 2k vintage watch from a swiss well made brand and inside of the watch (the caliber) was fake, was really bad quality. The last one was with Tamara (influencer from Milan) that had all her jewelry and purses (chanel, hermes) robbed and a couple of days before, she found lots of them to sell on these most famous luxury second hand shops that we all know. 😢 all these experiences made me never ever deal with second hand items anymore. Even a cheap ones. So, I’d love to know if you guys already had a bad experience and what do you think of it. ❤
This was so helpful, and always a good reminder. Just wanted to compliment the very sweet and sexy LBD towards the end of this video, it just looked so great on you. I feel like this is another thought, you KNOW what looks good on you, and as we live longer, we know what we like, we have earned our style. It's very empowering when I shop to say even to myself, " this is cute, but it isn't for me". I know what I like.
