What's something you do every time you record drums that you can't do without??

Making a fake stereo room track, as my room is fairly dry and I only have a mono room mic. To do this I send the mono room and overheads to a nice convolution reverb and then hit it with a fairchild in M/S mode. It's not the real thing but it helps A LOT
@PlottingTheDownfall
@PlottingTheDownfall 9 месяцев назад
@@simonhartley228 many pro mixers (myself included) often mute the room mics and use something like Cinematic Rooms or even the old Waves TrueVerb with it's Drum Room preset as the "room" mic. I find that it's easier to sit other ear candy elements into the same room as the drums doing it this way. Too often I get room mics that sound great when the kit is solo'd but really don't fit into the song as a whole.

Use a good template to have my drumset sounding close to the final product when I record. For me, it gives me more inspiration when recording also for other people when recording. I do this for everything, from vocals to drums. Recording with a pretty muddy mix ruins my vibe.

@@AndrewMasters I agree. I am always surprised and impressed at how your kit sounds in such a small room. I admit that being a mix engineer, tracking drums is not my strength, in fact I hate it. LOL. Which is why, when I need drums for a client's project, I'll farm out the drums tracking.

Recommending a drummer with their own studio is a huge suggestion. The drummer has their own drums, mics, pres etc.

Hey Andrew! You’re getting a bit of a null point on the cymbal with the positioning of your mono kit mic! Since the ribbon mic is right on the horizontal axis of the cymbal when it moves up and down after being hit you’ll get weird null points in its resonance! Would recommend positioning it slightly higher and possibly facing on a slight downward angle towards the kit to avoid the null point (you probably already know all this, just maybe a reader could learn from this tip)

One thing I'll use samples for is for a nice room, or slap sounding snare - there's one in Slate Trigger that I like. Rather than reaching for a plate or something to bus the snare to, I can just bring up the sample to get a nice thickening sound or a nice room reflection and automate it to give a little subtle movement in certain parts.

100% agree on drum choice. Even when I do covers, which can seem so "simple" to people, I'll always do a mini-recording with all of my snares and see what sits the best in the mix and compliments the song. Then, from there, we can fine tune. But yes. Choose wisely!
@corknakovastein
@corknakovastein 9 месяцев назад
Heads and tuning can be everything, can really get you good sound before eq and compression. I cant afford much hardware, ive been snagging allot of the plugin alliance emulation plug-ins and what a difference in sound that makes.

I also like to use what the engineers at Electric Lady Studios call the "smash" mic. Placed similarly to the mono kit mic, but just a tad closer. This mic is meant to be essentially "smashed" by processing such as compression and distortion. Gives a similar tone to the garage mic! Adds an incredible gritty texture to dirty up your drums.

On the garage mic idea, not everyone will have access to a room like that. I've had interesting results from sending my room mic through a convolution reverb to make it sound like it was recorded in a bigger room. You can even make your own IRs in any room. A simple clap is all you need to start experimenting. Record a single clap on your phone inside a room you like. You could use a balloon pop as well. The source of the sound will color the room differently. My family is building a Barn Studio and as soon as we added the roof and walls we noticed the reverb in that space. There will be additional walls and rooms inside so the sound of this full space will never be heard again. Might as well make some recordings of the space now. I just like the idea of having the full barn reverb to add to future drum recordings. If you don't want to make your own there are infinite reverb options to play with. A rule of thumb is to only use far mics for reverb and blend it to taste.

I don't have room for a full drum set, nor do I have the mics to record an acoustic set properly. Also, I can't get the sound I want off midi keyboard as the triggers. So, what I'm going to do is get syndrums as the triggers for the midi track and I can mic an amp that the drums go through for a bit more acoustic sound. It's the best I can do on a low budget.

what if you tried the garage mic in the wooden stairway? would be like a crazy big diffuser. sounds amazing either way, but i have an enclosed wood stair hallway here and i really think you'll like what you hear. even though it's hallverb instead of roomverb, i bet it'll be really unique. your clarity and drum tuning is amazing.

Hey Andrew I have a question let’s say your trying to dial in sounds with your outboard gear but you don’t have a drummer how do you do both cause don’t you need a drummer so you can get the sound your looking for using the mic pres

@simonhartley228
@simonhartley228 9 месяцев назад
THIS is the stuff I come here for. Great sounds man. And that last sample.... shheeeesshhh. 2 things I'd love to know... What processing (if any) are you doing on the way in? Or in the mix of what we're hearing. What is your approach to phase? Are you a polarity switch and compare guy? Or a manually move tracks around til they align guy?
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 9 месяцев назад
Yeah there's no compression happening on the way in currently - there's some EQ moves on the console on the inputs. On the playback side in the session there's top down compression/eq, on some channels. Phase all happens before the recording, mic placement is everything. Polarity switch and move the mic. I don't ever move the tracks after the recording.

Love it, thank you@@AndrewMasters Video idea I would be stoked to see from you... What is the bare minimum requirement for a studio set-up where everything is always plugged in and ready to record as yours is.

How often do you replace the heads on your kits?
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 9 месяцев назад
Not super often, only if I feel the drum isn't living up to it's potential. There's 7 snares and two kits so they get changed only when necessary.

@marcrobertson4735
@marcrobertson4735 9 месяцев назад
Do you time align the various room mics?
@clancybrett8414
@clancybrett8414 9 месяцев назад
It doesn’t sound to me like the garage mic was time aligned. Gives it a nice pre-delay that probably contributes to the huge sound (pre-delay AKA first reflections are one of the main contributors to how big we perceive a room to be)
@iamtonisilvers
@iamtonisilvers 9 месяцев назад
how do you compensate with phase cancellation ?
@AndrewMasters
@AndrewMasters 9 месяцев назад
I address phase issues before recording. Mic placement, check polarity between mics, adjust placement until mics are completely in phase. I've been doing it for like 15 years at this point so it's not that much of a thing. What's the hardest part for you?

Drum choice is way overlooked... It's easy to just set up your normal kit and start playing. We've got bits and pieces of at least 4 kits hanging out around the studio. We recently had a drummer in who plays with people you've probably listened to before, and he chose the kick drum from one kit, two rack toms from another kit, and used 3 different snares across 4 different songs. A hideously mismatched kit, but it sounded incredible, and perfect for the track he was recording.
