Gussets can be a big pain point in making leather bags.
Getting the length right, sewing around tough corners, etc...I've got a few tips that should help if you're struggling with this like I have.

Hey man I really like your videos. I'm 62 USMC VETERAN and due to a disability I'm unable to work anymore, so I just ordered a beginner's kit. I going to try my hand at leather work as a hobby. Pray for me and GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. MARK

Very good tips! Gussets used to be my worst nightmare too. Another way to cheat is to sew from both sides of a two piece gusset top down to an offset from the center mark at the bottom. Stop, trim the excess and sew the two gussets together. Then sew up the remaining hole between the body and gusset. This helps when you have a radius or you have inconsistent results due to stretching ect. If you skive well and cut the excess straight I’ve had pretty good results this way.

The 1" rule would vary, I think, depending on what seam allowance you use. Is that a Cobra 26 machine that you're using? Love it!

Gussets are measured in holes 🕳 if your hand sewn. If you use so many a inch like eight. Then inches also work... just be sure the 🕳 holes 🕳 are same distance around

#5 the cylinder arm machine... My wife lovingly purchased me a sewing machine as a surprise early Christmas gift... But it was a flatbed. It's a nightmare for sewing gussets into a bag. I would hate to disappoint her by telling her she bought the wrong machine... And it's a nice machine for what it is. But I wish she had asked me first.

If you're using round corners on the body of the bag, the difference between the lengths of the outer circumference of the body and the gusset is often due to the difference between the diameter of the round corners of the body and the the corners that the gusset actually is glued to and travels. So, for example, if the 2 corners of the body combined are a half circle of 1" diameter, and the seam that the gusset uses is 1/4", that means the the corners of the body are 1" x 3.1416 ÷ 2 and the gusset's corners are (1" - 1/4" x 2) x 3.1416 ÷2, and the difference 0.7854". Thickness and stretch of the leather will change things a bit, but the above math should solve out 99% of the issue. Obviously, it's better to use bigger diameter corners with smaller seams as it reduces the stretching needed for the gusset (In the above scenario, it's a 100% stretch, and you can reduce it to 33% by using 2" diameter and 1/4" seam).

This is great advice, it’s amazing, the tiniest margins can make a huge difference to the look of a finished product. There’s nothing quite as inspiring as a skilfully sewn leather bag.

Parker! Thanks for all your great videos! I'm getting ready to buy my first sewing machine and I'm stuck between the Cobra 26, which looks like what you are using here, and the Tech Sew 2750 pro that I've seen you do and review on in another video. I've look for compare and contrast youtube videos and couldn't find any. I know that both machines are good but would love your input to help me. Thanks!
@whitandpark

Hey Anthony! You're right, they're both good machines. If I was going to pick one right now it would probably be the Cobra 26 just because i like the brushless motor. It's a lot more smooth that the family motor on the Techsew

I watched a video you posted about a Techsew 1570? It looks like it was about a year ago. When I look at a recent video you are using a cobra class 26. Do you no longer recommend the Techsew? And is the promo code still good? Thanks Tom

Thanks for the tips! As usual, very helpful. Curious, what happened to the 2750? Noticed you were back on the Cobra (26?). Wondering because I just ordered a 26 because of the speed reducer and its a bit cheaper.
@whitandpark
@whitandpark 3 года назад
thank you:) I still have the techsew. The 2750 is a light-medium weight machine that I use when I need a cylinder arm. The Cobra that i'm using in this video is a class 3. Which is a clone of the 441 mechanism. It's for heavy duty stuff:)

Love your work! A question: I really love the hand-sewing part and still wanna be able to make project as big as this one. Is it still possible without a machine? I understand that it will take longer, but is it still plausible? Cheers from Sweden!

I worked at a leather shop for some time, and we hand sewed everything, even much bigger bags then this. Definitely possible, but hard as shit on the hands.

Molly Briggs I agree! That's why I'm planing on getting a fairly large cylinder arm machine. My hands cramp up so damn bad hand stitching.

I wish I could find Aqua lamb 315 in Europe. because am not happy with water based glue I use it now for leather. it is not strong and it tooks very long to dry out, and mosty sometimes I got moist glue inside my industrial sewing machine. specially inside the feed dog. a few times was happend and I had to stop and take out feed dog and clean it. I hate that part.

The class 26 is the same machine as the Techsew 2750 pro. They’re both just clones of the juki 341. They’re much better with light to medium weight stuff. I bought the class 3 becasue I was having a hard time making it through some heavy weight projects like holsters and the heavy weight bags I do

OLD LEATHER SMITH here, Very Nice, all good tips, the 1 inch shorter is good, my preference is 2 to 4 inches longer, 4 inside Flaps 2 hold things in the bag, and not 2 fall out when opening, not all the time, 4 me it depends on how the client is going 2 use it, Thanks 4 your videos, GOD'S BLESSINGS ✝️⚾🙃
