Totally agree that keeping your mind engaged is so helpful! Turn on a podcast and completely forget how bad climbing this peak sucks. lol

On my near thruhike of the Scottish National Trail this past summer 2020 I found myself constantly looking forwards to writing in my journal at the end of the day. I spent hours contemplating what to name each day's journal, and I excitedly looked forwards to reading as a treat too. On my zeroes (of which there were a few spent in my tent, usually due to weather although one was a true sick day,) I wrote on my iPad Air, which was an invaluable item which was well worth its 1 lb weight. As an artist, I love to draw as well as write, so the 1 lb iPad was significantly lighter than a conventional paper journal plus sketchbook and art tools. Plus, I could watch Netflix on it if I wanted on zero days in town, and I do not believe that I would have survived my fourteen day quarantine in London as sanely as I did had it not been for my iPad! (Easily the most boring experience of my existence, but worth it because it allowed me to hike the SNT during the pandemic.) Love your advice on the Superfeet, I think I will have to try those next time. I considered it in Scotland because I had problems with the extensor tendon on my right foot but that ended up being solved easily with some adjusted lacing, although the tendon remains kind of messed up two months later. It seems to like midcut shoes better than the Altra Lone Peaks which I took to Scotland but I'm hoping that I can fix it before I thruhike again somehow! Might go get some therapy for it once I am employed again. Love your note about how certain songs jog memories for you; that's a good tip for long term memory of a hike. I spent most of the SNT in relative silence (although I always had a song stuck in my head or a story ongoing,) but I CLEARLY remember the one glen that I was in where I caved, finally listening to a podcast because the weather was awful and I needed a distraction from my sodden state. (One of the reasons I want to do the AZT next - I feel like there's less chance of getting drenched day after day after day for weeks. Ugh. I got mild hypothermia three times on my hike. Very glad that I was well prepared and had good gear.) Anyway, you're awesome and thanks for another great video!

That sounds like quite the adventure! I also had some enduring injuries from my thru-hike but they’ve seemed to have sorted themselves out over this last year. I hope you can get that figured out so you can hit another trail soon! I’m glad you found my video to be helpful, thanks for your support!

#4. Most hike it because of the isolation not the socialization. Also, you cannot hear a rattlesnake if you have music in your ear.

Thanks for the comment! It’s up to the individual why they hike. I’m not sure how many people hike to get completely isolated. It’s a fine balance in my opinion and having some strategy to combat it is good to have should you need it. After a week of not seeing anyone, you may change your mind. Also, you can hear a rattlesnake if you only have one earbud in and your music isn’t loud. I did it for my whole hike, and for several months after at my job without issue. But you may have a different attitude for risk than I do, so I encourage you to hike your own hike 😁

From personal experience, use the regular Sawyer filter on the AZT. The Sawyer "mini" gets clogged more often.
