5 Tips How to grow a ton of dragon fruit

This video is all about how to grow a lot of dragon fruit (pitaya) in just one container. This method is what I call the hang or grow down method where the plant is placed upon a stand or in my case a stump and left to drape down instead of being trained up a trellis or post.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

Thank you so much. Lots of much needed information for my newest addition to the garden. I was just about ready to remove a huge stump caused by our recent hurricane Irma. Now it can stay and be a wonderful stand for my dragon. Have a wonderful day!

Thrilled to view your video on dragon fruit because of your five tips and most of all, just a pot and tree trunk will do for growing. No trellis! I hope to find a plant that will give fruit. Thank you for the tips.

I'm pretty recent to discovering you - this video is great and you are great! =) This one is so helpful and I look forward to watching more! A couple years ago I was given a dragon fruit cactus by another gardener. I didn't know what to do with it so I just stuck it in a medium-sized pot along with my aloe plant. It has amazingly survived with quite a bit of neglect, but thanks to your video I am now ready to give it its own pot! We usually mix our own soil at a 1-1-1 ratio of compost, peat moss, and vermiculite. It seems to be pretty well-draining, but I don't know if it's good enough for dragon fruit. Does it sound to you like that would be ok? For some of my other succulents and cacti I have added some sand to the mix, but I don't know much about sand and am uncertain about the quality of sand we have, so I may want to avoid that for a food-producing plant. (We just bought a bag of play-ground sand from a local home-improvement store.) Also, because we have cold winters here in North Texas, in the U.S., and the 12-inch tall by 14-inch wide clay pot I have for the dragon fruit will probably be pretty heavy for moving in and outdoors, I'm thinking of just growing it indoors year-round, sitting on a bar stool as a stand. Do you have any advice about this? I have tropical hibiscus plants that are very happy during winter in a sunny corner (they do better inside in winter than outside in the summer heat!), so I'm hoping it will be ok for the dragon fruit, as well. Thank you again so much for this helpful video! =)
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 5 лет назад
Any free draining medium is fine for DF as long as it gets some fertiliser and regular water. Yes, growing indoors with sun is a good idea for your climate but you will probably have to hand pollinate the flowers that's all. Merry Christmas 👍
@thepockethaven
@thepockethaven 5 лет назад
@@Selfsufficientme Cool - thanks so much! I thought it was interesting in your video that you specifically mentioned the ants in your container. As we speak (type), there are teeny tiny black ants crawling through the hibiscus blooms in my living room corner - they seem happy enough to stay in the containers when we bring them in from outside, so I'm actually wondering if something like that may happen with the DF. I once had a container of little pepper plants inside and when I finally dumped it out, at the bottom was a nest of the tiniest little black ants! As long as the ants aren't causing any harm to the plants and aren't taking over the house, I'm fine sharing my plants with them. =) Although I do have to keep an eye out for them harvesting and spreading aphids! I sometimes end up with some assassin bugs and other predators in my winter plant corner too, though - it's just a mini ecosystem over there during winter, haha. Would you happen to have any suggestions for a companion plant to go with the DF as it works on filling out the container?

Just recently came across your channel and started watching your videos. I had to subscribe aswell. I have been interested in fruits ever since I was a little kid. Never cared for the "more casual fruits" such as banana or apple. I love exotic fruits. I'm living in Finland, one of the most northern countries so it will be extremely hard for me to grow anything myself I guess. I was able to grow lemons from seeds and had 3 plants 7 years ago though. They grew thin and very tall but later died out. What do you think - Is it impossible for me to be succesful in fruit growing here? I would love to grow dragonfruit in a pot but I only am able to do it indoors. Our summers are shorter (like canadian summer) and the winter and cooler period is significantly longer. I have came across that some fruits come with pests - I have seen stink bugs on citrus and peach trees. Is it a natural occurence? How do I get rid of them? Anyways thanks for these videos and keep up the good work. ☺

Hello, what about a dragonfruit that has climbed 7 ft up a palm tree? I planted it 6 months ago (3/7/23) it started out 2 ft tall. It didn’t produce any buds! The other 3 planted same day, started out 2ft tall now are about 5 or 6 ft tall and I tipped those 3 so they did put out a bunch of branches maybe 10! But no buds I’ve used fish fertilizer Ty

Any idea why my tree would be dropping all the flowers? It is the 3rd year. First year I found it in my driveway after a hurricane here in Florida. Last year transplanted it to a “tree” container and got like 5 flowers and they all dropped. This year I’ve had 100’s of flowers and they all keep dropping. I’ve been trying to pollinate them at night when they bloom but it seems they all end up closing back up and sort of melting away then the whole “bulb or fruit” just falls off. Do I need to pollinate from one flower to another?

I have been growing dragon fruit from seed. I however have no idea what I am doing. Its been slow going. Which is normal from seed from my understanding. This last year it has grown alot. Now though there are roots comming out of it along so many spots. I have no idea what it wants. Its only in a small pot so maybe that's the problem? However it really seams to like the small pot as it's grown a ton lately. See I have no idea. Suggestions would be great.

Thanks, I have had a very poor excuse for a ‘cactus’ ‘living’ in a tiny donkey planter with out a drainage hole for 30 years!! It was the mother in laws and simply refuses to die, thankfully as I love all sorts of plants. After this extended period it was identified as a Dragon fruit cactus and I’d love to give it some much deserved TLC. I live 100km north of Sydney and this little cactus lives in a micro climate, so it’s time to act, let’s see if it can respond. Thanks again.

@juliemcgugan1244 Год назад
Try different varieties. Some, red or white are very tasteless. Others are out of this world. I can’t say that either is better than the other, they both taste great. But you have to find the best varieties. Some breeders seem to have gone for size and shelf-life, over brix (sugar content,) and taste. But if you are lucky enough to live near where they grow it, you may find that the smaller varieties actually taste better. That’s the case where I live.

Depends on the varierty. Some are very ‘meh,’ others are gorgeous. In general, I find the best red/burgundy coloured fruits taste very berry-like. The best white varieties laste more like vanilla mixed with melon and have a really smooth taste. Depends on your own personal preferences.

That's a really cool way to get hands-on experience. Nothing wrong with this way of learning. I'd say this is the best way to learn if you want to master a specific subject. Many great achievers have hands-on experience with their long-term mentors.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I purchased a dragon fruit plant about a year ago and it’s on my patio. I’m going to move it outside and use your method.
