Hello my friends! I’ve teamed up with Quinn Wentzel to bring you guys 5 great tips on how to ride some of the craziest rocky terrain we could find. I hope you guys enjoy the video and as always, feel free to leave a comment!
Step number 1 is to let the bike move underneath you. You don’t want to be squeezing the bike with your legs when you’re going through the slow speed rock sections like this because you’re going to get thrown all over the place. Let your legs loosen up and let the bike do its thing.
Step number 2 is to use the suspension to help maneuver the bike and to help get you unstuck. Compressing the forks and then pulling up is a great way to get your front tire out of a hole. It’s also a great way to move your front end slightly to the left or right.
Step number 3 is to AVOID WHEEL SPIN. We want traction you guys! If you’re spinning your tire all over the place, many bad things will happen. Your rear tire will slide into every crack and hole it can find. You’re not going to find the grip to get up and over anything. And you’re not going to be able to nail techniques like holding pressure to loft that front wheel over a hole. You need to understand finesse with your clutch and throttle to find traction in places like this. When you start to spin your tire, stop and assess the situation. Look at what is causing your tire to spin and figure out how to solve the issue. Quite often, the simple fix will be to weight your rear tire and be a little easier on the throttle while letting the clutch out slowly. Your clutch is how you control how the power comes on and in many situations, you’ll want to let the power on gently to avoid breaking traction.
The next tip is to think outside the box. Here is a classic situation where I cannot fit my bike between some rocks to make the turn. I’m really exhausted from battling my way up to this point so physically lifting and pulling the bike is a no go for me. Instead, I’m going to get my bike vertical I a slow wheelie so that I can fit through these rocks while making that sharp turn.
Last but not least, I’m going to address the burning question in your mind. “How do I even get started in such ridiculous terrain?”
A rock garden like this can be extremely intimidating. The first thing to do is break it down into sections and take it one at a time. Try to get through each section as smoothly as possible and then stop and reassess before tackling the next one.
It's important to really look ahead to choose safe places to stop where you can put a foot down. The holes and gaps in the rocks makes it especially difficult to stop or dab a foot so it's important to have a plan on where you can put a foot down when you attempt a section.
Thanks so much for watching! Hopefully this information can stick with you and give you a good base to start with when attempting to ride in the rocks!
