Hi Jamie, appreciate your support but can you help me with something I really want to do in Davinci Resolve 16 ? Basically, I want to get rid rid of the voices from the audio track of a video ( but keep the rest of the audio intact )and then replace them (the voices) with my own voice recording. How can I accomplish that ? Could you make one of your next videos about this ? Thanks a lot ! PS :Oh yeah, I want my voice recording to sound awesome as well so that may imply making 2 tutorials.

If it can´t be done with Da Vinci, please suggest a program that can do it, Thank you !
@JamieFenn

When you drag the video into davinci, the audio track should be there underneath it so just delete it and fill in the rest with your voice and layer it with a quieter background noise of whatever the shot has in it. (city streets sound fx, coffee shop, mall noise etc, whatever the case may be) and then use the technique that I'm posting a video about today with it :D

A nice starter for the basics, without having to know all the ins and outs. Audio isn't my strong point. I have 2 questions though: - Do you have to do this each time you start a new project? Or is there a way to save the set-up of this audio track, to be ready for other projects, so you don't have to go through this each and every time? - What is a good way to get a soft "male" voice to be a higher pitched "female" voice, without sounding like a chipmunk or robot? I've used the pitch plugin, but I've noticed that you can't really go beyond 1 semitone without it sounding fake. Around 60 to 70 cents seems to be the most, but still not to satisfying. I've also used the EQ the lower the bass frequencies. Cheers

I have templetes for different types of projects. And as far as having a voice changer that would have to be a 3rd party vst of some sort.

Hello Jamie Sir. Can you make a tutorial on saving and working with the/4k files? I.e. how to save for later use in other video projects after color grading. Also the best formats to use for jewtube/Vimeo. I don't think the presets from Davinci are accurate. How can a compressed video be 20 times larger than the source files. Etc.

This is about processing audio, which is half (or less) of VO work. The other half of improving how you sound won't be found in tutorials. Actual tips include: learning to write for the ear, breathing exercises, enunciation practice, and practice, practice, practice. Get someone you trust to critique your deliver. Wash rinse and repeat. There isn't a expander, compressor, dynamic eq, limiter, or exciter in the world that can help with being a mush-mouthed inarticulate mumbler. Good VO is about performance (which is hard to so well), not technology. This is a good start, but it's only half the story (or less).

I'm confused on something. Why would you want to reduce the high and low ends? You said it's for clarity, but this is why i'm confused. Radio voice-overs usually increase the low and high ends, to get that 'studio' sound. don't they? For example, Howard Stern and others like him. And their audio sounds very clean, very clear Maybe i'm misunderstanding something here.
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 5 лет назад
FM and AM radios in cars only pick up so much frequency at certain ranges, especially bass frequencies (they don't travel as far) and radio hosts probably eq to try and counter the missing signal. Radio hosts also JUST have their voice most of the time. Feel free to keep the low end, but I cut out the bass frequency because it's usually not necessary and does improve overall clarity. It mainly depends on the individuals voice as well. When trying to mix your voice in a video with music playing at the same time (which is what voiceovers typically do) you don't want the low end to get muddy and cause clarity issues which is really easy to do between 40 - 300 HZ. Im posting another video later this week and it will make more sense. This video was also not necessarily tailored towards radio hosts... hope that clears things up.
@saadshah7857
@saadshah7857 5 лет назад
Another way to look at it: Jamie used a high pass filter to cut frequencies from 0 to 40 Hertz. Those frequencies are just rumbling and noise. Cutting those will not affect his voice because his voice frequencies start at ... say... 110 Hertz and above. So to make his voice bassy, he would boost the bass in that range. I suggest check out some tutorials on equalization, parametric eq, and how a spectrum analyzer works; that will be a big help.
@Nimiety327
@Nimiety327 5 лет назад
@@JamieFenn Yes i think i get what you're saying. I think you're basically saying... The heavier bass in vocals could interfere with nonvocal sounds. So that's why it's not an issue for radio/podcasts. And you're saying that it comes down to the voice itself and the project itself, which makes complete sense to me. (not sure about freq. boosting due to radio limits, because the style doesn't seem specific to radio-wave programs. A lot of radio is streamed now, and then there are podcasts which seem to have similar sounding audio to radio programs.. but it may be that the original reason was to make up some lost signal and has sense become more of a style) But i think i do understand now. You're teaching from a filmmaker perspective, with a type of editing that's geared toward filmmaking. I was looking at this from more of a 'jack of all trades,' editing mindset and trying to apply the lesson in that way... Which doesn't seem to work lol. Thanks for taking the time to help clear it up :)
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 5 лет назад
Hey no problem! And yes it definitely depends on the voice itself. A lot of radio show hosts have a specific sounding voice, morgan freeman or the guy that narrates the planet earth episodes, have very distinctive voices. Hopefully I cleared up a couple things. Thanks for the questions!

@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 4 года назад
You can set your voice to what you prefer. Its about the mix/balance of your audio throughout your video. But to give you perspective... Most music today is limited to reach a volume of -3db and sometimes compressed and smashed to the ceiling to be .03 - 0 db. So if you set your volume of your voice to -13db the difference will be HUGE.

I really appreciate this video I’ve started using it on everything I’m doing and people are liking the audio a lot more!! I’d be interested in an even more in depth video on sound if you ever have the time. Maybe talking more about why each adjustment is used and why in a certain order. Hi, That was a great video, but way out of my league😂😂. One question though, Do you repeat all the steps that you just explained every time you are working on a video that is to be uploaded on youtube🤔🤔. Great video and keep uploading ☺️☺️.
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 5 лет назад
Yes I do. But a lot of my settings are the same because my recording environment is usually pretty similar.

Hey Jamie! Great stuff here. I'm still learning my way around Resolve and Fairlight is something that i'm discovering right now. I have 2 questions though: I have a recording in wich the soundguy leveled between the answers. Im adjusting those answers with keyframes. Would you take the loudest or the quietest answers as a reference for this process? And do i start your process with this? The other thing is there is some AC humming in some of the interviews that id like to filter out with the denoiser. Is this something you do right from the start or rather in the end? So i gues 3 questions :) Keep up the good work!
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 4 года назад
Doesn't matter which you select to reference from they all need to be the same volume. Making it all sound somewhat the same level is where you start. So break up all the audio and normalize it in sections. If theres humming try using the EQ to get it out.

What's up Davinci Daddy! Thanks for the video. I know I have been asking for it lately :) Cool tips on basic VO processing. I am more interested in how you are recording the signal, meaning what mic, room acoustics, how you are dampening noise. That signal of yours is pristine, man. What are you using?

Thanks for the upload but you need explain WHY you’re doing things. “I just leave it at the default levels.” Okay, but why? Why not change them? This video was almost just an interface tutorial; not a sound tutorial.

It’s tough to balance time/info in videos. Some people say this took too long, and others say, this was way too fast. It’s tough to cater to a massive audience so I do my best. My future audio tuts will be more descriptive.

Thanks Jamie! Audio is so key 🔑 especially when repurposing your video content. Question: The last step, is there away to have the audio stay stereo? I ask because of the new iPhone 11Pro & Max with the stereo sound/recording. Thanks again for sharing your skills 👍.
@JamieFenn
@JamieFenn 5 лет назад
Hey thank you for the kind words! Yes audio is definitely key and makes videos SO much better. I only suggested using the mono feature if your audio comes in on the left or right channels. When you record the signal usually comes in on only one channel. You could try and duplicate the channel twice and pan it left and right to make it wider. Davinci still has limitations in some situations but Ive always had the core of my vocals be mono as it will sound good on any platform and usually any mix, (and usually sound better when mixing with songs because music usually has a wide stereo mix.)

It would be soooooo cool if you could add in timestamps to the description for this video. Because a lot of these settings can't be saved to use later, I run through this video last thing before I publish, EVERY TIME. It would be nice if it were easier to jump around to each section, though.
