There are many types of cover crops. Some are grown during the winter (winter wheat, winter rye), then rolled over with a crimp roller to form a thick mat of green manure that crops could be planted in. How this works? The crimp roller crimps the plant near the base thus killing the plant and leaving a thick green mat. Think about the amount of time and effort you'd save by having your crops pre mulched and all you had to do was push the mulch away enough to seed the soil. This method would definitely help keep the weeds and maintenance down while providing ground cover and keeping the soil full of deep penetrating roots that'll compost away.
@r.d.4568
@r.d.4568 3 года назад
Cover crops are great. I think it's a great idea you're diversifying and using the usable space. There are many drought tolerant crops available like beans, sorghum, millet and array of flowers. I understand the desire to use lawn type grasses. I don't recommend using lawn type grasses for production orchards-lawn takes extra maintenance. The herbicide glyphosate 'Roundup' primary target is quack grass. Quack grass is a wild rye with invasive mat forming roots with sharp enough points to drill through roots. The weed blanket will cover the tops of quack grass while the quack grass is busy filling up the soil underneath the blanket with roots. Latin name for quack grass is 'elymus repens'. White Dutch Clover also has 'repens' in it's Latin name. The repens weeds thanks you a lot and will love sending taproots down the fresh plowed ground you've provided for them. Quack grass is the number one reason why roundup.glyphosate is used in commercial food production. Yes, repens also loves it's roots chopped up. Chopped roots is a fine way to propagate repens. Go ahead and play with the repens for a few seasons. You're welcome to have lawn in your orchard.

This is the third time I’ve watched your video. I love this video. So informative. What I wish you knew was how much water to give dwarf or semi-dwarf trees grown in containers. I have an dwarf apricot, apple, and I just purchased a dwarf peach tree, which I am totally excited about. I knew nothing about growing these when I first started four years ago. I’ve learned a lot from generous people like you that take the time to teach us. Thank you for your time. Great job on this video.

Recently watched a video on using "whey" as an orchard tree spray (Stefan Sobkowiak channel)... Interesting application ... An organic cheese house in your area might be a source (?) if you decide to try it out. Love your channel, but now that you've moved on to commercial scale not sure how relevant to my situation might be. Ever thankful for the home garden info and tips over the past few years. Thank you. I will continue to watch, just for the sake of knowledge if for no other reason. 🙏♥️

Thank you, Jag, for this excellent video. I live in an area of Australia which is known for the stone fruit industry, and my brothers and I spent many summers of our teenage years picking fruit to earn Christmas money. You have brought me some good memories today. I have some peach trees at home, and a nectarine, and figs. I had an apricot tree about 6o years old planted by my grandfather, but I lost it a few years ago in a drought. Your video has now given me the knowledge I need to plant some new apricot trees, which I will do in memory of my grandfather.

Hey Jag, in our little orchard we did carboard then leaf litter and then wood chip mulch around the trees for weed block and it keeps moisture in (earth worms are happy!). We plan on planting bee turf around the tree's to replace the "weeds" and be food for the pollinators. I think it will work out well.

May I suggest an organic weed/ cover crop management technique that might work. Your 3 acres ... can support like 14-20 total in goats or sheep or both on a rotational grazing scheme with the help of electric fencing. You can have the livestock just for grazing or for meat or for dairy ... I know this is a garden/ growing farm show but regenerative farming seems like the organic method the AG world is exploring ... understandably it's a lot more labour in the upkeep of livestock.

Thank you finally found your video about fruits tree. I am having brown rots on my cherry tree for the last 8-10 years. We sprayed dormant spray kit in early spring this year. There are lots of buds now. Normally afterwards all the cherries turned into brown rots. I have put eggs shells powder into the soil. Also added 20-20-20 soluable fertilizer today. The trunk looks like fungi. Is there a way to prevent brown rots on cherries? Thanks

Fresh manure is spread in late fall. This allows the manure to age through the winter. Yes, it's easier to spread aged manure. Spread the aged manure in the fall. This also allows some time for the soil communities to process the manure before the growing season.

Jag, have you considered running chickens on the orchard to "mow" the cover crop and provide manure? It could be an additional source of money for the farm and would benefit the soil life.

When you said you planted the trees, were they already 1year old or older or did you plant seeds(stones)? I have two: lemon, peach & apple trees, all are approx. 1yr old. I see new growth lower, but I heard not to cut those new growths the first year. All six were from seeds I planted last year and they really didn't begin growing until Spring 2021 Can they remain in giant pots, so they can be moved to a warmer location during times of frost? Do I need more trees of each type of tree other than the two of each, in order for them to bear fruit? I love your Videos & I thank you for such useful info in your videos

Anyone planting trees? Definitely put a whole coffee can or industrial soup can around the base of the tree. Don't cut the sides of the can - put the tree through the can during planting. This will help prevent rodents from gnawing the young tree or sapling down. This will also help against attacks from the weed hackers. The coffee can could be cut away after 6 years, or when the main trunk is extremely wide or the coffee could be left to rust away, or the tree is having issues with having the coffee can in place. Cutting the coffee can away and adding the coffee can to recycle bin is the preferred method. A girdled tree is a dead tree unless several grafts are made to form a bridge across the girdling band. Planting small trees and tree seeds without protection is called 'feeding the animals'. Yes, some trees such as the apple tree, require yearly random attack from animals. No tree requires getting girdled. I started viewing "Daisy Creek Farms with Jag" video during this past week.

Bare root trees don't come with tap roots and will not produce another tap root. The tap root is fragile and was either broken or broke off at the tree nursery. A tree that grew from a seed you planted will produce a taproot unless something eats the taproot. A tree with a taproot will grow huge and require less maintenance. All transplanted bare root trees/shurbs/bushes will take 3 years to get well established. During this establishment time, it will be in the tree's best interest to pluck off all the flower bud's. This will force the tree to focus on root development instead of reproduction (fruit development). During the tree's dormant period, the tree will focus on root development instead of branch development. The dormant and growing periods could be seen on a piece of wood. The darker brown rings are the dormant period and the light rings are the summer growing period. More water and resources equal larger wider rings.

Where are your Felco 4s ?, your loopers are overkill, your blessed you dont get 120F, also you should paint your trees, the nursery trees are densely propagated, for a couple of years, til the bark get thick. Not every orchard uses Glycphosphate, we also us a brush that has a wheel to clear the trees, posts, grape stalks. We use cover crops as well.

When you first plant trees, use drip line on each side of the tree and keep it 6 inches from the tree. 3 months later, move it 1 foot away from the tree. Next year, move it 18 inches to 2 feet from the tree and water heavily. 1/2 gph emitters at 24 inch spacing will soak the ground in 4 hours enough that all water blobs will connect. Water again when soil begins to dry but not fully dry. If you use sprinklers, you don't have to keep moving the drip lines, you can just use one line.

Sucks to have insect pests. Without the insect pest there wouldn't be the more desirable species like dragonflies, birds, toads, etc. " An example: Yes, you definitely don't want to get over populated with tent caterpillars but you don't want to drive away monarchs and swallowtail butterflies during your combat affairs with the tent caterpillars. Maybe walking the orchard once a week and using your hands to collect the tent caterpillars in efforts to reduce the number of tent caterpillars. " Yes, I highly recommend walking your orchard on a regular basis and actually checking over each tree. The checking each tree does not have to be done all at once. The examining of each tree could be done in the evening for an hour or so.

So none of your audience points out you’re calling a peach/nectarine tree an apricot. Apricots have heart shape leaves which is very different than a slender shaped peach/nectarine leaf. @0:35

Omg 😱. He is single. Intelligent and cute? Can not be true. Would never be interested in and over educated dance obsessed dr Doolittle. I guess I will get another dog 🐶. I have 3 dogs and a stray cat name pharol. To resist because .... well trump for example. His evil womanizing clones. Then you see 👀 and wish you were brave enough not to hide. I remain the queen of my house. Tiara tiny dress and maybe one more dog
