I built my own little table top router table pretty early into my woodworking. It really opens up the versatility of the tool.

Great to see someone new tackling the tool lists for new folks. Perhaps worth mentioning is the used market, especially for the larger stationary tools. As an example: I purchase my 3Phase 5hp Delta Unisaw for $500, spent $100 on a phase converter, $20 on new bearings and a few hours of re-work. For a 50+ year old saw, its 10x the saw most people will need, and it certainly was worth the effort. I would also posit that, which tools you get depends on your projects. While a drum sander is great for smoothing some projects, a thickness planer with nice blades is more versatile, and a jointer is irreplaceable if you use rough sawn stock. Also the drill press should make the honorable mention list. Good luck with your channel.

I thought of the drill press after I recorded everything! I definitely agree!

Anytime I use a tool with no dust port, I usually use a ziptile and attach my vacuum hose where the tool spits the most dust out. It makes a big difference.

Might have to give that a try. Thanks for the idea!

wow, great idea hitting that "intermediate" niche. keep the great tips coming! Have you upgraded your dw735 to helical yet?

No. I would love to do that. But I also consider just getting a whole new planer that’s a little wider if I’m going to be spending the money!

Great video. Halfway through the video I was wondering if you'd get to a drum sander. My opinion- it should be an "honorable mention". Mainly because I see it as a good "bridge" when you're going from intermediate to expert. That being said - I think this applies more to a business mindset because of the efficiency you gain from it contrasted with its cost and shop footprint. In the end - you could use it as a "luxury" tool for intermediate woodworking, but that goes against the theme of the video "Tools you NEED". If you're planning on ramping up production , then this is where I think this tool becomes a "NEED". Great video all around though. Also - Maybe its just me, but I think your videos are fairly low in terms of volume. Just something to think about and look into if you hear the same from others.

I agree with you. A drum sander definitely can apply to a business mindset. But there are some uses for it that could be considered otherwise. Thanks for the comment and I will look into the audio issue!

So do you have a planer? I've been debating planer or jointer as my next step forward..

Yes. I would firmly recommend a planer over a jointer. You can make both jigs for your planer and table saw that do the same thing as a jointer for a fraction of the price.

I am going to be adding a drum sander to my shop and if you don't mind me asking what did that one cost?

The one in the video cost me $1,100 but that was about 9 months ago. I just checked the prices and the same one was $1,400🤦‍♂️

Good video, but tools depends on the woodworker , to me a band saw would substitute it for a jigsaw, but cost too much relevant factor.

volume was good till about 3min in then it faded to little more than a whisper by 4 minutes in . may not be a problem for newer computers , but made the video unusable for me . sorry gave up
