The other thing about "old School" Sir Topham, was that in the books he was actually three separate people. You had the first Sir Topham, who was given a Baronetcy, which is where the Sir comes from. for those who have never heard of this before, a Baronet, which yes, is separate from a Baron, is the lowest ranking hereditary title the crown can bestow on someone. A Baronet is not a peer, ie not eligiable to sit in the House of Lords. The first Sir Topham, in universe, retired in 1954 and died in 1956. His son Charles Topham Hatt, the second Baronet, took over and was the one to retain steam traction when the rest of BR switched to diesel. Charles retired in 1984 and died in 1997. the "current" Railways series Sir Topham is Stephan Topham Hatt. Yes, the kid who first showed up in "Toby the Tram Engine". He has a son, Richard Topham Hatt, who is in line to take his father's place.

@sirrliv

In fairness, Lexi was technically not a Sodor engine; she appeared in the movie "Journey Beyond Sodor" as one of a group of experimental locomotives that were left abandoned in a forgotten yard on the Mainland (which still implies that this failed American engine somehow found its way to the UK? But whatever, he's right in that in the latter days of the series they were just grabbing models from everywhere regardless of if they made sense in the setting). These experimental locos were actually meant to be representatives for children with various mental disabilities, in Lexi's case multiple personality disorder. How successful the showrunners were in their representation has been... debatable.

Maybe you should make 5 trains that were once preserved and then sadly got scrapped 5. Grand Trunk Western #5629 4. Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy #5632 3. The Budd Silverliner I (because one of the reasons why is because the remaining 2 Pioneer III/Silverliner I cars, 246 and 247, were donated to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, but were scrapped in 2014). 2. Pacific Lumber Company #10 1. Southern Pacific 0-6-0 #1294 (one of the reasons why is because This locomotive was displayed in the playground area of the San Francisco Zoo from 1957. It was a popular attraction because kids were allowed to climb all over it. Unfortunatly, the salt water in the air accelerated its deterioration. As a result, in 1987 it was removed from the park and scrapped). Maybe you wouldn’t mind doing that.

Fun fact about that Dustin character, he's actually lost media! There were 3 characters that were created for books to tie in with play sets, and 2 of them got animated shorts. The only one who didn't is Dustin (though it probably does exist somewhere). Also, I feel like a good idea to do later on is make a series of videos going over a bunch of Thomas characters' real-life inspirations

Ah, yes, the Holman Horrors: 4-4-0s on a 6-4-4*-0, the driving wheels on an extra 0-6-6*-0 base. Truly a horror. And an 0-4-0 on an 0-4-4-0 on a 4-6-6-0 base. *or 8 and 12 depending on your view, but i see it all as it's seperate layouts. Pat doesn't look THAT bad, though I can see why he is a tad haunting in the way of being built from the husks of the scrap of others. Edit: i had to add the 2nd engine set

I imagine there had to be conversations about Pat, to whomever had to operate him the first time. That conversation probably started out; "aieght now...," with some instructions to his idiosyncracies and do-nots, that would probably give OSHA and the train equivalent of the DOT an absolute field day, if it existed today. I bet we had a Pat of sorts at this landscaping company I worked at. It was a Ford F550 that stayed pulling a huge tandem axle dump landscape trailer. Unspoken rule was to never roll the windows down, because it had zero rockers and if you did, it made a draft that sucked exhaust from the broken manifolds inside the cab. I hate a/c so by myself I did anyway. You also had to ride the brakes in reverse, or it would stall. We actually had two Pats. The other was a 90s Chevy C1500 that carried a single zero turn mower on a [broken dumping] landscape ramp bed, that replaced its original bed. Wasn't allowed on the expressway. It had turning issues. It turned left fine, but to turn right, you had to turn right, then left, then a bit right, to straighten the truck back up. I ended up driving it on the expressway twice.

The NPC 21 is absolutely hilarious to me because of how freaking awful it was. Unrelated, but one train I think you might find fun to talk about sometime is the Australian Standard Garratt. Commissioned by the government to serve as a standardised model for operation across the australian narrow gauge, it ended up being just one big mess of compromises that made it bad at everything, AND atrociously unsafe, to the point that the queensland railway unions banned it outright from being operated within months of it being put into service, and the majority of them ended up being either scrapped, or just used for the water tanks on farms and the like.

Maybe the Holman horrors were an attempt to increase traction. If you think about the contact patch 3 small wheels have compared to 1 big one, and how even the big wheel has contact to 2 wheels instead of one rail, it might seem to make sense. I don't think it worked very well, otherwise there would've been more than two, but this might have been the idea when they tried it. Or maybe they really thought it would be quicker, as smaller wheels would turn faster. Unfortunately they also have a shorter circumference, and that exactly cancels out the higher rpm

The 87 is scary because it's the opposite of what a train is supposed to be. I guess cruise trains are fine in Japan because there's enough regular service anyway, but where there isn't they fundamentally misrepresent passenger trains as a concept. They're supposed to provide casual transportation for everyone.

I'll say this in... well, not in *defense* of the Holman Horrors, but in an effort to play devil's advocate for them. The system *might*, and I heavily emphasize *might*, allow for their use on more lightly built track by A) reducing hammerblow (if there's suspension in the trucks), and B) reducing axle load. Otherwise, though, yeah, they're a blatant scam.

I can't help but look at the horrors and feel like they must have *some* potential, *somewhere*. It feel like it's possible that the contraptions below the driving wheels could be changed into bogies to turn something unarticulated with a bajillion fixed driving wheels into something that can actually take a corner. You'd need to use something with better adhesion than steel on steel for the mid-wheels though. The middle set of wheels is also completely pointless as you can surely design the engine to run in reverse by default which would cause the lower wheels to make the engine go forwards.

Hey hey hey hey hey, hey Darkness my friend, I must give you three points here. No I am not going to be that guy but I do want you to have some more information. 1. The Mattel smash on All Engines Go, keep that up because that truly needs to stop and return to being CG and Pseudo realistic. With you all the way Mattel has cheated the next generation Thomas fans. Thankfully we have many talented people like Blue Snowplow doing the legacy proud. 2. In defence of the use of No. 21 I don't think the engine was too terrible looking, a few changes and a better tender and it wouldn't be such a ugly duckling. On the fact Lexi was based on it you got a few facts to clarify, she was part of a trio who were Experimental designs, Theo is a Freelance mix of Blue Circle the Rail Traction Engine and the Pennedale (Forgive me it is not a common name ) locomotive, and Merlin was based off a SR School Class with three funnels a real design to try to make them harder targets to the Germans during WW2. 3. All the engines from Journey Beyond Sodor were not Sodor engines and never bought by Sir Topham, Merlin did visit Sodor but he was not owned by the NWR. The point of them was to exaggerate (remember this is the company who made All engines slow.) Experiments that would never do real work until the big happy Friendship song. 5. In Thomas Engines, Rolling Stock and cars are alive, Ted while built of scrap was built from the one part of a engine though technically a separate part wasn't alive, a Tender. Tenders were part of the engine but weren't anything but a part of that engine for fuel carrying, Gordon, James, Edward and Henry had tenders of Fowler design right? Well The only one that carried one from the day they were built was none, not one of the three big engines carried a tender of prototypical design and neither did Edward. Tenders weren't seen as sentient in the Railway Series or the TV show. So of all parts to make a engine out of scrap wise was indeed a Tender, it would give it life in Awdry's mind and if adapted to be a engine in the CG Series all you need to do is give him a face and make the roof look better and you got a engine that could work at the Stone Quarry with Mavis or Toby. But as I said just giving you some food for thought here, I am in no way trying to be a jerk. Great video look forward to the planes my friend.

A lot of Thomas mentions this episode. I appreciate that. But let's be clear that the CGI era of Thomas, for all it's interesting decisions I think is fair to say was actually mostly good, and not every character introduced works on Sodor. If anything the CGI series was unique in it's willingness to explore the main land, even if only a tiny bit. Something not done since the Railway Series. All Engines GO however is an abomination and I hope it's cancelled and Matel realizes their mistake.
