In Himalayan range locals make pine incense for winter for healing.

Fun fact, the mountain ranges in the US run from north to south and that geological arrangement allowed our trees and plants to grow and spread throughout the entire United States, of course where the climate allowed them. In Europe the mountain ranges run east/west which actually deterred the natural spread of a lot of tree/plant species. And ultimately made some off the European species to die out or make them endangered.

I think that you should use a map, and specifically take a look at Sweden, Norway and the Scandinavian Mountain Ridge.

Great content as usual! I’m a little suspicious about the fifth picture shown at 1:01, is that really a Rowan tree? To me it rather looks like a red elderberry..?

@@lilolmecj I am very much aware how both Rowan trees and red elderberry looks like and that’s the reason for my comment. In the picture it doesn’t look like Rowan berries. In the rest of the video it’s no question about it, it’s definitely Rowan trees. The resolution in the pic is however not great and I might be wrong. But a comparison with other pictures of red elderberry is just strengthening my hypothesis… 😉

@Udgaard01
@Udgaard01 7 месяцев назад
Ok, the 5 were easy, but I'm from Denmark, so that's probably part of the explanation. I see you were in Denmark before you went to Sweden, you walked around Copenhagen. At the beginning of the of the video, you walked along the canals of "Christianshavn". However I'm a bit sad that you didn't choose Ash along with the other 5. It' s almost the most original tree in the Nordics, it even appears in our sagas. "Yggdrasil" who holds the world in it's crown. And to the comment about whether it's a Rowan or Red Elderberry. I can tell it's a Rowan, even though they are both small trees. Red Elderberry (Sambucus Racemosa) or "Druehyld" - translated back, "Grape Elderberry" as we call it in Denmark, is a bush, and much more light and flimsy than the Rowan tree... And poisonous ☠️. Nordic Greetings Jane from Denmark 🇩🇰
@UntamedScience
@UntamedScience 7 месяцев назад
Hey Jane! That is fascinating. Maybe I should do an entire video on the ash. I think that'd make for a wonderful video. I agree. I could have switched the rowan for ash. I could have also chosen the beech tree, which is one of my favorites too. I let Jonas choose in the end. ;) Thanks for the comment. Denmark is wonderful by the way. (fun fact, I visited with my mother on this trip and she was able to find her grandfathers birth home before they came to America!)

as a norwegian, my dad always used to teach me the names of all of the trees and also ask me if i could name them later. so yea, i knew all of them. also when it comes to norwegian spruce, when the new shoots grow out in spring, they are quite edible and is as easy to eat as a cucumber, a bit sour, but quite edible, they get more bitter and more stiff later on however.

Interesting to only have one type of Pine. In the US, Pacific Northwest, Pine is not as common as Spruce, but I am fortunate to have one pine in my yard, though it is not super healthy. But my understanding is it is a companion to Matsuki mushroom. I should see what I can do to help it be healthier.

The Swedish translation of ”sour grapes” goes; “Surt, sa räven om rönnbären” - “Sour, said the fox of the Rowan’s berries”… It’s quite funny since the Rowan berries are indeed sour, as opposed to grapes. But Swedes are sticklers for alliteration I suppose!

Wow, not since reading about the coal mines of Czechia and Silesia have I encountered the moving of humans to accommodate mining. That was before the fall of communism and decline in the value of coal, but it tells me that Swedish Iron ore must be very valuable, indeed. I also noticed the irony of national tree names when Linnaeus was a Swede. Scots pine and Norway spruce? As if!
@JoshuaRolen

They must have started taxonomy there because they thought they could actually count all the types of trees. Where I live, in the heartland of Appalachia, it almost seems like every other tree is a different type of tree.

@@UntamedScience Yes, that is my experience, we get it handed down thrue our generations, picking mushrooms, berries is or were a big part of growing up. These grow all over Europe. I'm not nordic, so i can't speak for them, but i can speak for slavs and i think you'd have a very hard time finding a slav who couldn't identify them. Most eastern europeans could probably even identify them just by smelling the smoke from these trees wood being burnt (not counting the Rowan Tree, 'Jarzębina' in Polish)
@UntamedScience
@UntamedScience 7 месяцев назад
That's really good to hear. I'm glad most people in Europe seem to be able to identify these common trees (or at least the ones that follow my channel). I find it interesting that many Americans I know can't. I don't think it's there fault either. It seems to be an unfortunate product of many Americans being the children of recent immigrants to a new land. Add to that the diversity of ecosystems in the US. If you leave your home for college or a job, you could travel 3000 miles to an entirely new habitat where all the trees are different. I was blown away (for example) that in Sweden there is basically only 1 oak, 1 pine, 1 spruce, etc. That makes it a tad easier to know the basic trees.
