ABOUT THE GIRL IN THE TIARA
----------------------------------------------------
I tell stories about tiaras and the fascinating royal women who wore them. Join me as I follow these tiaras across generations and countries, through wars and revolutions and-sometimes-into darkness and disappearance and destruction.
This isn't the kind of history your professor lectured about. Instead, think of this as conversational history, like a mash-up of Drunk History and The Crown. Yes, there's a little swearing. There's also humor and heart and a boatload of compassion for these amazing royal women.
ABOUT ME
-------------------
I never intended to start a channel or a website about tiaras and royal history. But a midlife crisis forced me to re-examine my life. I gave up fiction writing after self-publishing 9 of the 10 books I'd written and earning next to nothing.
Instead of the misery of marketing books, I turned to my first love...royal history. So here I am, a 40-something burnout, trying to start over by recapturing her love of history, royal women, and their jewels.

Love this look at the Kokoshnik Tiaras. I love history as well and seeing this was wonderful. I am not as fast a reader as I use to be so I had to pause the video so I could get a good look and read all you had to say about all the interesting families who owned these tiaras. Having titles and wealth is no promise of Happily Ever After unfortunately. Thank you for taking the time to educate us on this little known part of history..

Thank you so much - I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I was still getting the hang of things in this early video, so the speed would be much slower if I made another one like this today. And oh, yes, those royal titles never guarantee a happy ending. Their sad stories make me glad I wasn't born to that life. (Still a little jealous of the palaces and tiaras, though!) :)

@@thekingsdaughter4233 I use this feature both ways on so many videos since I found it. It's very convenient especially for creators that speak too fast or slow for your liking (which is different for everyone, so nobody can really get it "right") and for videos like these with lots of images that is a bit too fast to catch everything. Hopefully this tip with help more people to enjoy more content to it's fullest extent :)

So what did they do with the emeralds they took out of that one tiara? I mean, without those large emeralds the tiara’s basically worthless.
@TheGirlintheTiara
@TheGirlintheTiara 3 года назад
Most likely, they were sold separately and/or reused in other pieces sold by Van Cleef & Arpels. There's no definitive public paper trail, so we don't know which pieces they ended up in or who got to wear them - we don't even know if those lucky people knew they had Romanov emeralds.

The correct spelling of the nickname of Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster, is "Bend Or." It was the name of his grandfather''s (1st Duke of Westminster) thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1880 Epsom Derby. "Bend Or" is also a term from heraldry (coats of arms). A "bend or" is a diagonal stripe (bend) of yellow/gold (or) that goes from upper left to lower right of a shield or escutcheon . The original coat of arms of the Grosvenor family featured a "bend or" on a blue (azure) background, but in 1390, another family filed suit in the Court of Chivalry contesting their right to use it. The Grosvenor family lost the case, and King Richard II commanded them to comply with the verdict and change it, which they did to the one still in use today. The horse's name was a family "in-joke" that referenced that old device and court case.
@TheGirlintheTiara
@TheGirlintheTiara 3 года назад
Thank you for such a detailed comment! Yes, I found the origin of his nickname during my research (both the horse's name and the family heraldry). The majority of print resources I consulted collapsed the two words into one ("Bendor"), including the album of his third wife, Loelia Lindsay. "Bend Or" is the original and more accurate, as you pointed out, but I chose the simpler version more often seen in print. Thanks again for adding to the story! :)

Seeing all those beautiful kokoschnik tiaras it is very strange that the Russian GrandDuchess Anna Pavlova sister of the Tsar who became Queen of the Netherlands when she married King Willem II never introduced nor used a Kokoschnik during her life in the Netherlands.
@TheGirlintheTiara
@TheGirlintheTiara 3 года назад
That's an excellent point, and I can only think of two potential reasons. In the 1820 fire that burned down her palace, she lost a number of diamonds. Some were recovered, repolished, and reset in a new ruby-and-diamond tiara. I'm not sure what piece(s) those diamonds were in prior to the fire. Maybe a kokoshnik? And she simply chose a different style when those gems were repurposed? Also, her brother, Nicholas I, was the first to codify Russian court dress, which really brought kokoshnik tiaras to prominence. But Anna's trousseau would have been created before he became tsar, while the Empire style of jewels was still so popular. Maybe that has something to do with it? Thanks for bringing this up...it's an interesting point to ponder!

Looks fascinating! If there is no spoken dialogue, you have to learn how to space out the story so it gives everyone reading along, a generous amount of time to do it in. There was too much written for the time given. You barely had time to look at the photos shown while reading (and more often than not..there was no time). More photos and close up photos of the tiaras and the person wearing it. I really wish I could have enjoyed the photos and the written dialogue. It’s an amazing topic.

@TheGirlintheTiara
@TheGirlintheTiara 3 года назад
What is your favorite tiara shape? The larger kokoshniks can be overwhelming, but I think the smaller ones can look charming. The Prussian Hellenic tiara (not in this video) is a little pointier than most kokoshniks, but has the same general shape, and I think that one looks fantastic on everyone who wears it (Queen Letizia of Spain, most recently).
