There is a lot of German culture imported into the US and American culture imported into Germany, but some things just don't make the trip across the pond that could cause a little bit of culture shock. From German food that Americans have never heard of to the way some holidays are celebrated differently, there are just some differences between Germany and America that we couldn't have expected. In this Germany vs. USA video, we wanted to share 5 common German things you won't find in America! 😊

The Ordnungsamt has a lot of jobs, if you visit the homegape of your town or city, you see there listet wich responsibilities they have there. If a shop owner eg want´s to use public space in front of his shop, he has to ask the Ordnungsamt and they decide how much space is OK, so that the pedestrians did not have to walk a slalom. The uniformed field workers of the Ordnunsgamt manage minor misbehavior (dog problems, parking, pollution, missuse of public spaces, security concepts for public events, etc.)

I'm an American happily living in Stuttgart, Germany. I moved here 2 years ago. I'm actually kind of obsessed with quark! Nobody in America knows what I'm talking about when I am raving about it on facebook 🤣 I first discovered it when I tried Quarkbällchen! They might look like donut holes but they are nothing like donut holes. They are heavenly! Everytime I go to the supermarket I get them from the bakery. I also love quark on baked potatoes, for breakfast with fruit added or as a dessert. I'll have to try making what you mentioned, the dip. Looks delicious!

The vending machines have less to do with the opening times of the supermarkets and are mostly stocked by local farmers to sell their products outside of the farm shops. Therefore, they are usually found in smaller communities and not in large cities.

In Germany the chimney sweeper has to come to control and clean a gas heating system once a year. He controls, if the exhaust gas values are okay and if there is any danger of an incorrect combustion process. Also cleaning the chimney helps for a more efficient combustion process due to less exhaust back pressure.

I was a Sternsinger at the age of 16, 40 years ago, and we got some liquor at every house we visited. So after some houses, we just started to laugh when we got offered an other shot and had problems to sing our songs. But when we got home to our parish priest, we were told to sit down in his office. Then the housekeeper went in and asked. "Boys, you want some Gluehwein?" We bursted out in laughter.

Haha....I grew up in a protestant region, and the same happened to me when, as was customs there, the "trombone choir" made its round through the villge at Christmas Eve to play carols at various street corners. Religious differences must not keep you away from the boozze, right? XD XD.....I was pretty giggly when i got back home for dinner.... Even better: It was so cold, that the valves in the instruments would get stuck, so our conductor poured a little pear schnaps down each instrument as anti-freeze.....I forgot to clean mine....2 weeks later I opened the case in the public music school´s orchestra rehearsal.....people around me looked genuinely worried. The cloud of stale booze was literally eye-watering, and I was like what, 15? XD XD XD

I've never seen a sausage vending machine, and I lived in Germany all of my life. The number of 570,000 is not sausage vending machines, but all vending machines in Germany including bus/train tickets, beverages, cigarettes or condoms. Sausage vending machines may be a few hundred or probably one or two thousand. What is coming up more and more recently is milk vending machines, mostly in one corner of a farmer's homestead, together with a box full of eggs or potatoes. But again, here we are talking about maybe a few hundred of such vending machines across Germany.

Not all members of Ordnungsämter are unarmed! In some towns the Ordnungsamt is called ,Polizeibehörde' and the personal is armed. Also in Stuttgart there are two branches : the ordinary Ordnungsamt ,whose personal for example controll parking lots, and the armed branch ,Feldpolizei'. This name is misleading, it is not military police, it means field guards ( Feldschütz, Feldhüter etc.). Those Ordnungsamt officials are the descendents of former nightwatchmen, towncriers ( Büttel) and field guards. I understand the fact, that some Ordnungsamt personal is armed, because more and more people have lost respect and and honour and attack firemen, medics, doctors in hospitals etc., and there are in my eyes much to much persons, who allways have an excuse for such violent behaviour.

The Ordnungsamt hast virtually all the legal authority the police has. The significant difference between them and the police is that they don't carry weapons. Hence, they will rarely use force themselves but call the police for assistance. However, in Germany the power to arrest people is not restricted to the police. The legal basis for arrests is so broad and universal that in principle anyone can arrest someone who has been caught red handed. The so-called Jedermanfestnahme. A supermarket detective would, for instance, arrest a thief if that person is caught in the act. Naturally, you cannot hold people indefinitely. Hence a supermarket detective would call the police immediately, so that they can take over. The Ordnungsamt does similar things, but in a different context. When there are disoriented persons that refuse medical treatment, the Ordnungsamt will sometimes accompany paramedics when they need to treat people that are a danger to themselves.

Thus the Stadtpolizei does indeed have all the rights the state police has (within their area of responsibility), also to arrest, and they are trained with weapons and allowed to use them.
@TigruArdavi
@TigruArdavi 2 года назад
@SchnuffelWuffel Depends on the state and also the municipality, in Frankfurt they are indeed deputy police officers by Hessian law, carry guns and are basically allowed everything a state police officer is. Also no one hates them, except a few idiots like left- or rightwing extremists, Reichsbürger, Querdenker and all the rest of the vermin who are a threat to our democracy. Yes there are assholes everywhere, so naturally also among police and Ordnungsamt, but they make a good and not so easy job by and large and the public can be and is glad to live in a well organised country with the right of law and a proper enforcement of it. Anyone who claims to generally hate the police or other authorities I consider an enemy of the state and our law, liberties and democracy, because they are.

The weirdest interaction I ever had with the local Ordnungsamt was when they wanted to check if a friend of mine, who is disabled and wheelchair-bound, was treating her dog well. When my friend was unsure whether she had to let them into her apartment the guy from the Ordnungsamt actually argued that he didn't need a warrant to enter and search other peoples homes, specifically because he wasn't a police officer. In the end we could solve the problem without legal trouble, but I still don't understand how he thought that was legal.

Okay, trying my luck at explaining the chimney sweeping the best I can. Pretty much all German houses use central heating with a furnace these days, most of them natural gas, some are still burning heating oil. More CO2 friendly options like a heat-pump are also becoming increasingly popular, but that's a thing for another day. So in my house we have a wood burning fire place (for the nice atmosphere in the living room) as well as the normal gas furnace for the real heating of the house and hot water. The chimney for the fire place is swept once a year and every two years the chimney sweep also carries out the emissions inspection on our gas furnace, in order to check that it still complies with emission control regulations. Of course the little plastic chimney that comes out of that doesn't need to (and can't) be swept. Now as you are aware many German houses can be quite old, so they were built with these large brick chimneys for the coal fired heating places of that era. Now when oil and gas heating became a thing, the new furnaces were usually connected to the old chimneys for convenience. So while they don't need to be swept anymore these days they still need to be visually inspected as they're made out of bricks and not a continuous metal or plastic tube.
@torstenwinkel2183
@torstenwinkel2183 3 года назад
The "chimney sweeper" has some more duties... We own some flats and have gas fired central heating (per flat) and the "chimney sweep" (Schornsteinfeger MEISTER!) is responsible for the safe working of the gas system: One time the chimney sweeper tested the gas burner. That meant he put it into full power and measured the emissions, every thing ok, then left. Because the gas burner was usually not powered up that high and tenets living there did not clean the dust of the "gas therme" it began to smell strange: They were SURE it was the smell of gas, THEY HAD A GAS LEAK! (bullshit, but hey...) Who was responsible for the safety of the gas installation: the "chimney sweep". So 10 min later he came, smelled the "not gas leak" (and measured with a probe) and left again. It was just heated dust from the unusually hot gas burner....

In a certain way, the Ordnungsamt/Ordnungsbehörde is the municipal police (for instance, in Baden-Wuerttemberg and Saxony, the Ordnungsamt is called the Polizeibehörde). But other Bundesländer have separated the police and the Ordnungsbehörde into two separate entities. Basically, the Ordnungsamt does everything you can do without special police authority like arresting people or using force. And for quark: Please don't forget Quarkkeulchen and Quarkbällchen, which are (sweetened) Quark baked in a pan or in boiling oil. Quark is slightly curdled, soured milk stripped of the liquid. If you let it stand for some time, you get sour milk cheese (acid-set cheese), which are also a staple of the German diet and called Handkäse in Hassia, Harzer Käse in Northeast Germany, Graukäse or Quargel in Southeast Germany.

That sounds a lot like a coal or wood fired stove. I think if you have any of those or a fireplace they have to sweep two times a year. And depending on how old the building or the roof is you still may not even have steps, they became only mandatory over time for work safety reasons. On newer buildings or roofs with windows and living spaces behind those, you may also find steps or like a platform beneath one of the windows as well. Those may by the way serve as an exit for the chimney sweep to get roof access, but they are actually like a fire evacuation path where the firefighters have a safer place to put a ladder to in case of a fire.

As you guys reside in Rheinland Pfalz, give the following recipe a try: Boil some Pfälzer Kartoffeln in saltwater, peel them while theyre hot, take a pound (500g) of quark, season it with salt and pepper, maybe some chives or spring onions and enjoy. If you want it extrapfälzisch, take some Pfälzische Leberwurst (the grey stuff, that reeks of liver) and put that on the plate too. So in the end youll end up with Pellkartoffeln mit Quark und Leberwurst. (Hot peeled potatoes with spiced quark and liver sausage). Its one of the dishes with the most memories attached to it, cause my grandparents used to eat it a lot! It's super easy and quick to make: put one packet of Quark (500 g) into a big bowl, add whipped cream (max. 200 g, but 100 g works, too, if you want the dessert a little lighter) and mix thoroughly. Then add 1 small can of pickled tangerines - including the pickling fluid - and mix that in, too. If the mix is not yet sweet enough, you can add some sugar, but for me personally the sugary pickling fluid from the tangerines usually suffices. And tadaaa: Sahnequark mit Mandarinchen, in memory of Onkel Hans ❤

Pronouncing the "Qu" in Quark, just try "kw" - still difficult, i know. For your american viewers: regarding the "Ordnungsamt": that's what is meant by "defund the police".

Qu is more qv with English pronunciation. Qw would work in a German pronunciation.

Hi guys, I'm German and I'd like to answer your question about quark. My favourite way to eat quark ist to mix it with ordinary plane yoghurt, salt, pepper and some herbs. That gives you a wonderfull white, delicious sauce that you can dip vegetables in or bread (rostet dark bread is the best here) or you can take it to a BBQ. It fits to so many thinks. Tonight actually I will have this white sauce with a whrap, fresh salat and chicken on it. I'm so looking forward to that. Love you guys. You are amazing!

Like how you say "Quark" 😁. I am from Homburg by the way but i am out of Germany since 10 years and i am shocked about the sausage vending machine.

I have lived in many cities. The chimney sweeper always came once a year. They clean the chimney and check the heating system for exhaust fumes (carbon monoxide) and damage. In the Middle Ages, when houses were still built with a lots of wood, entire cities often burned down. The risk of a chimney fire was prevented or reduced by chimney sweepers who cleaned the chimney. As a result, house and city fires occurred less frequently. They probably already checked the fire pit for safety back then!

Hey there and thanks for the great video! I love seeing how our country is being received by people of other cultures. I live in Nuremberg, Bavaria and we actually do call the police for noice complaints. I have actually never heard of usual citizens calling the Ordnungsbehörde or Ordnungsamt at all. They just do their duty and are being called upon by either the police themselves or the emergency dispatchers. Nevertheless, really interesting video and I hope you have a great time here in Germany!

I am from Berlin and in Berlin dialect Quark is called "weißer Käse" (white cheese). My favorite way to eat it is with fresh herbs, salt, and onions (or chives) and Leinöl (linseed oil), with a side of potatoes boiled in their peel (Pellkartoffeln und Quark). I rarely buy Quark though, but prefer "Schichtkäse" (layered cheese), which is closer to what you get when you make Quark yourself at home. When I lived abroad I had to learn how to make Quark myself, because, like you said, outside of Europe it is pretty much unknown. You mix fresh milk with lactic acid bacteria (either buy online or use a few healthy dollops of creme fraiche) and leave it in a warm place for a day or two until it becomes sour milk, which is similar to yoghurt. Then you drain the sour milk in a "Mulltuch" (muslin cloth /cheesecloth) over night, which gives you Quark and Molke (whey, which is a very healthy low-calorie drink). It is very similar to making drained yoghurt, however Quark, especially the homemade version, has a slight champagne effect on the tongue.

Bread, Quark, and some jam or jelly on top is awesome. Or jacked potato´s ( called Pellkartoffeln in German ) with salted and peppered Quark with some chives ( Schnittlauch ) in it. Classic summer dishes.
