I love 1watt amps. I have a current DSL 1, HT1 blackstar. And yesterday I went into a guitar shop and they were cleaning out storage and had a brand newnin box 50th anniversary white Custom shop jcm1 tube head mini stack. I asked the price and he actually sold it to me for almost half the price it was when it came out 10years ago. It's perfect, unopened and sounds great and looks amazing. I'm hooked on the 1watt stacks
I have the three 'older' 1Hs. The sound from them is fantastic. I grew up with 800s, but I think the JMP is my favourite - it's the sound of AC/DC and just about every classic Marshall rock album you love from the 70s ... :))
I had all but the DSL. I sold them a while back but really miss the JTM. I used to run the JTM & JMP together, both cranked. The best vintage rock tone I ever had.
Thanks again for another demo. These all sound GREAT to my ears. I LOVE that you are including stereo room audio. And the reverb you added in the clean sounds at the beginning is beautiful.
I got the JTM-1 Offset for a great price two years ago...could not get more happier with it! Killer tone, rich and fat as these old Marshall sounds have to be. With an SG, it is candy sweet and roars like hell when pushed:D The apparent simplicity (2 buttons) hides a pannel of different nuances and made me play with the combination of the guitar tone and volume.
Great playing and review Johan. I thought the DSL sounded best. I have a one watt and a hundred watt DSL. I really like the hundred watt's midi preset abilities. I loved the sustained grind when you were hitting a single chord on the DSL...LOL... I could tell you were listening to see how long it was going to sustain and maintain growl!!! Great video.
You'd be surprised to find out these amps are quite loud when cranked even with 0,1W setting. Of course not Super Lead loud but still. I have both JMP-1C and JTM-1H which neither has master volume, so in order to get the sound, you have to crank them unfortunately...
Damn I always wanted that jtm 1 also I like the fact that it was made in England. I want one. Still don't know why I didn't pull the trigger. Thanks for your time and effort. In your videos you do exactly what I think about 24 hours a day LOL. But I don't have the means to carry them out so thank you
Johan, have you seen the new Origin range Marshall are bringing out this year? They seem right up your alley, you must get your hands on one for a demo when they come out! Edit: sorry, didn't realise someone else had already mentioned them!
Hey buddy...your the best friend a guitar player could ever have...love you brother....you are loved by all the guitar players of the planet earth..."Johan Segeborn".....Super Star..Genius...great guitar player you are.....cheers heavy dude...
Johan, could you do a video comparing speaker cabinet wood differences? People say there are radical differences between plywood, birch, pine, press board made cabs ect. Is it true?
I've got the JCM1H and I love it! It's the only way I can have a Marshall on 10 in a 55m2 flat. There is a huge difference engaging the boost (JCM900) button to add the clipping diode. 2 amps in one, and both sound great.
JCM900 button? I think it's more like a Jubilee button (I have both 800s and Jubilees, full size)). The 900s were quite different circuits, whereas the Jubes were more like a hot-rodded 800, as I understand it/as it sounds to me ... :) Slash has often used Jubilees and/or 800s, which is why I had to have one ... It is the sound of Appetite/Illusions, just like the JMP is the sound of AC/DC ... :))
Kieren Moore the Boost switch also does a great job of replicating the sound of the dual channel 800s, which isn’t quite as dark a tone as the Jubilees are.
The amp used on Appetite For Destruction was modded by my friend Frank Levi & was his SIR #36 1977 1959 Super Lead. Slash loved the amp so much that he actually took it & later had to return it. theguitarzombie.blogspot.com/2014/10/frank-levi-wizzard-of-amps-speaks-out.html
I'm liking the trend towards low-watt amps. My JCM1C is my go to amp for noodling on the couch. I wish I'd gone with a Head model though because the built in 10" speaker can be a little boxy sounding but I love being able to crank the volume without pissing off the neighbors.
Sounds great on this end but how does it sound sitting next to the speaker cab? I have never played through a 1 watt amp. Do they get loud enough to enjoy while playing in a average size room?
Sweet bedroom tones Johan! I hope you can get your hands on the new Marshall Origin amps! Maybe a comparison to the British originals or even the new DSLs.
@@JohanSegeborn is the only difference between the dsl 1, 20, 40 and 100 , the volume? Can you get the same fullness in tone from a dsl 1 head going into a 4x12 cabinet as you would with a 40 or 100 watt head being used with an attenuator into a 4x12?
Hi Johan! I always checked out your marshall videos and it is great! Which of the 1-watt Marshall is good to play with distortion pedals? I have the JTM1C and it has too much bass and it is not the best with pedals IMO..
Hi, Johan! DSL - 1 is right for me! I am very liked that video, because bedroom sound of Marshall steal unexplained. My old english Valvestate 10 is very powerfull, in comparison with Fender Frontman 15r, for example. Maybe I will bay one of those 1 series. Very interesting, usefull and helpfull video! Thank YOU! Zigfrid
Zigfrid Washburn zig I have a pretty decent collection of amps but the one that completely draws me in and amazes me (especially for the price!!!) Is the frontman r15. It's truly a marvel of Fender joy...to my ears it's almost like the blended tweed, blackface and silverface tones perfectly . The added RCA jacks going in so you can Jam with some tunes in one box was a pretty cool idea. That amp or the old old old Peavey bandit would be my choice if I had only one amp to pick while stranded on some beautiful tropical island with forty amazingly beautiful woman.
Sam Fosdick Oh, Sam, if you will be in that kind of situation, you must get some MESA-BOOGIE 2000, or at least DeVille 1000 - those 40 beauties will scream so loudly!:-)) Yet, Frontman 15r was my only one amp for 10 years, until it became rusty and brocken, and than Johan made some videos about Marshalls, so I bought one for me. But it is good technic invention. What do you think about IBANEZ TBX 20? You know, I had one, and I was very satisfied!
I also own the DSL1 as well as the JCM1. I owned the JCM1 first and thought it was the be-all-end-all (as I live in an apartment). I found the DSL1 for a steal and was surprised to discover it’s versatility. It can nearly attain the sound of the JCM1 with more gain on tap. If I had to choose between the two, I’d probably go with the DSL1.
Sean Christie OK! I am happy, that I am not alone! I live in my house, and for last year I was playing on FENDER PERFORMER 1000, but it is porn. Even volume at 1 making my window brocken.:-) For now I am a little tyred to play like an idiot, and I am working with Marshall. Johan's influence was very important factor, because he never told me bullshit. So I can trust him. Yeah, DSL 1 is most interesting to me. And for you!:-) Sam prefers Fender, and his opinion is very important too. I am glad to hear all opinions! Zigfrid.
Johan Segeborn YES !! Lead 12's (& 20's) are awesome. Glad I bought a bunch b4 U tipped people off & the prices went way up - at least here in USA. Happy Friday, CHEERS !!
JTM-1 sounds more balanced, no harsh treble like JCM-1 and warmer than JMP-1. DSL-1 is the most flexible, you can have a lot of classic sounds. Cheers!
Hi Johan. Great video as always. Which head is your favourite? I used to have a JCM1H, but I sold it because I think it almost has the same sound as my Laney IRT Studio and the Laney has outputs for direct recording. BTW, have a great weekend. Thanks.
The low watt Laney amps are excellent. I've got the Lionheart L5 Studio myself and 5 watts is very loud. I quite like the 0.5 watt setting and that's still loud but at least you can get a great sound by turning it up to 8 or 9. It's funny how the IRT sounds like a JCM because my Lionheart sounds like a 1960s Bluesbreaker on the drive channel.....but I did read somewhere that Laney made the Lionheart to sound like a Marshall Bluesbreaker on the drive channel and a Vox AC-30 on the clean channel, and they did a good job - it must have something to do with the EL84 power section. I'm sure they must have done the same thing with the IRT being made to sound like a JCM cos I'm sure that the IRT uses EL34's in the power section instead of the EL84's in the Lionheart. 👍
I have a Laney IRT 60h, and I swear the ‘clean’ channel with the onboard boost sounds like a pre JCM Marshall, Laneys definitely have some magic in them
Halloj Johan! Allt gott!
Watched twice I bet you had a good time ringing their 1 watt necks lol. Liked all, but the JVM seemed big and full for a lil amp. Well got to watch again this is good stuff! Thanks Johan!
im a lucky idiot to have 2 of them the jmp1c and the jvm1c hahaaha got them really cheap and i was complaining .now they sky rocketed .great amps .i had the chance to buy the jtm1c and i thought no too many amps already .stupid me.nevermind im still a lucky idiot to own 2 of them.
So here's an experiment I've daydreamed about but haven't had the opportunity to try. What if you used the FX send on the JCM1 and ran its preamp into the FX return of a Marshall Lead 100 Mosfet? Would the Mosfet sound even more authentic to a JCM 800 if it had a JCM 800 preamp and would the JCM 1 preamp sound even more authentic running through a stronger 100 watt power amp? For fun you could also reverse it and run the Mosfet preamp into the return of the JCM 1 to see what that sounds like, too.
I found a cheapish JTM1 combo a month or so ago and I'm floored by it. I love it to death. And for reference I have 1976 50w MKii 2x12 which I use with my bands. I could easily see recording with the little guy and it's perfect for home use and recording. It just sounds like a delicious bite size marshall.
I'll take one of each please! My only issue with these when they came out was that they were so darn expensive. I love the low wattage stuff and these sound great, but at what price? I have the Orange Micro Terror and Blackstar HT5C and they both are pretty incredible for 20w solid state power amp section and 5w tubes respectively. As you have proven time and time again, the speaker makes a TON of difference (the Micro Terror sounds weak and boxy with the 8" micro matching cab, but really opens up into a larger speaker or cab). Great shootout and have a great weekend Johan.
My JCM1H into an 8ohm G12-65 running a 1W (without the power reduction engaged), Master 10/10, Gain 6/10 I measured at 98db at 3m (on about a $15 db meter). Be aware the efficiency of the speakers makes a huge difference here. Same settings on the amp going into a Silver Jubilee 2x12 cab did 106db at 3m. Let's put it this way; in a small room in an apartment building, that "cranked" 98db will be like having a ok party going, but your neighbors won't call the police. You can hear from Johan's demo what kind of tone you get at that volume.
The link aboveis Correct. I saw it on the andertons channel. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-waC1p201Xpw.html It realy needs put through a good cab which they never did :(
I don't think I'd buy one till I had plenty of disposable income. I've already got a class 5 which gets close enough for the time being plus Marshall just came out with an amp that has a low power half watt mode on every model. There's even another dsl1 I think that just came out
They finally released the DSL1 2018 version at a fair price of $299 for the head and $349 for the combo! Bet buyers of the original DSL1 50th anniversary series might not be too happy, especially when they paid upwards of $800. This new version has updated features. Only drawback is only having a volume control on the classic channel. My JVM1 also has just a volume on clean channel. Would be great to dial in some gain.
mavrim7 the new DSL1’s are not identical to the DSL1 50th Anniversary amps, the new Chinese DSL1’s have only volume control on the Classic Gain channel (no gain control), as well there is no deep switch, both of which are quite useful and make the English made more diverse than its Chinese counterparts. The Chinese DSL1’s have Reverb but let’s be honest, who uses built in Reverb on a Marshall?
If you like that riff check out Black Sabbath - Country Girl from The Mob Rules. JVM-1 has the best tone for me, even sounds better then the dark tone Iommi used on Country Girl.
the answer is always the same "depends who you ask" lol they all sound 99.% percent identical I have the jcm1 combo and had the jtm1 one sold it to similar and the jcm1 has more gain more options ..
nobody asked you Leo! they all sound different, if you ever played two at the same time you'd know this. I played the jtmh, and the jmph with an ab switch, and the jtm is much cleaner but still rocks, and the jmp just rocks. just like they're supposed to!
This is a really interesting question if you can get your hands on the equipment again, not everyone will be able to just go to their local music store to feel the difference. What is the actual difference in volume between one of this 1 Watters vs a 5W Silver Jubilee or DSL vs for example an Orange Micro Terror or Vox Lil'Night Train vs a 50W JCM800/900/whatever with some sort of power reduction device. What effect does speaker efficiency have? My JCM1 into a 1960A with G12T-75s is tolerably loud, but I can't really imagine playing it at full volume into a Silver Jubilee cab with V30s for any period of time in my apartment. Cost is also interesting. Where I'm from, I could sell my JCM1 and probably get two used JCM900s, but then what would I possible do with them in my apartment? :-)
Yeah I´m looking for a small wattage tube head for my apartment and I am torn between Mini Jubilee 20, Victory V30 (expensive), Hughes and Kettner Tubemeister 20 and EVH 5150 LbxII. I can´t try out any of these at shops because they don´t stock them and I have absolutely no idea which one of these to buy for 80s rock and metal music :-(.
I like these amps but they are so damn expensive, and yet the electronics have the build quality of a cheap alarm clock. And yes, I know the price is a reflection of R&D and small production run.
