Mystery solved. My spider plant, which died, was root-bound. I repotted it, but the mistake was that I did not loosen enough nor trim the roots, and just repotted as it was. Thank you for these tips. Very useful.

Lack of nutrients because of being root bound makes so much sense. Why didn't I think of that? SMH!! I'm just so thankful that I have all these wonderful videos to educate myself. Sheffields has become my go-to for advice. I'm binging on them. Plus, I love his dry sense of humor and don't get me started on his accent!! ❤ 😊

Love all those root bound shots! I have had one plant die from strangling itself.....never knew until it happened late winter....it just started to droop all the time and when it was too late I looked to repot and there were so many roots wrapped around and no rot just strangled! Very nice info :)

Thank you. Was fun making this video, checking out whether my plants were rootbound or not!

You can take a serrated bread knife and cut the bottom third off the root ball put it back in fresh soil and it will be fine. (after it recovers from the shock.)

What makes it even more difficult is that some plants like to be rootbound and other don’t 😂

I recommend not to use a pot that tapers down in size. In my 25 plus years of gardening, I've always had less issues with root bound plants in cylindrical pots. Not saying it will not happen, but less often an severe. Very informative video. 👏

Hiya, many thanks for your video. I have a pot which is quite big, however the roots are showing at the top but I can't make the pot any bigger because ot makes it very difficult to move, do you suggest cutting the roots a bit? Thank you

What about ZZ plants? Mine has been thriving even during these cold days and recently put out 8 new shoots about 3 months ago but now I'm finding a few leaves turning yellow. What are your thoughts

I just ordered a split leaf philo on line. It came with somewhat yellow leaves & air roots jutting out of the top. I am thinking it is root bound. Do I need to pot up? or can I just cut back the roots & keep it in the same pot? re: the yellow leaves? should I just cut them back to the soil to see if they will re-grow?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants 2 месяца назад
Yes you can root prune it. You can cut the yellow leaves off

Is there a way to make it so plants will just stay one size after some time? because eventually won't you just have to put them in a giant pot too big to have indoors.

Hello. Today I planted a fairly large Acacia tree (in a 15 gallon pot). I had a feeling the roots looked weird, so I went on RU-vid and sure enough it appears my tree is root bound. Ugh. Should I dig up my tree and unbound the roots asap? Or wait?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
So you repotted into a larger pot? I’d leave it. The roots will start to grow into the new soil by themselves

Repot no matter what time of year? I just bought a mangave that is suffering from being severely pot bound. But it’s mid winter here in the northeast US. I’m conflicted knowing it’s basically dormant but seeing some real damage from being so pot bound. Maybe repot but don’t water?
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
Don't worry your plant definitely won't die from being root bound. They can handle a few extra months being root bound so feel free to wait till spring. Saying that they can be repot any time.

@@SheffieldMadePlants I stopped stressing, made an executive decision, broke up that mass of roots and repotted. Haven’t watered yet. I figure it’s looking pretty rough, can’t get much worse, poor thing. Thanks for your response!

My monstera keeps pushing out small leaves with no fenestrations. Is this a root bound problem? I put it in a large container because it didn’t push out large leaves but still not happening, just a bunch of little ones. Thanks!
@Stoneylfm

What I mean is the established leaves aren’t getting larger but the plant keeps pushing out new growth 😅

Is it normal for plants to start rotting if you leave them pot bound for too long? 😭 Im a chronic under waterer, so many of my plants are in containers without drainage and just a layer or leca or charcoal at the bottom and I’m noticing some look great one day then suddenly decline and there will be a ton of algae in the containers and some of the roots starting to rot 😭 I’m also thinking I water too much when they’re too dry. Ugh. Plants are hard! Lol.
@SheffieldMadePlants
@SheffieldMadePlants Год назад
They tend to rot from sitting in standing water which sounds like this is happening. Can you get them into plastic pots with drainage holes and then inside your decorative pots?
@allie4457

@@SheffieldMadePlants I just spent the last 2 days repotting everything to things with holes hahah. When I got into plants I was terrified of over watering and repotting too much and turns out I’ve been doing the absolute opposite and never repotting and under watering LOL.
