Pretty much sugar was like “oh so you don’t like that? Let me make it so clear you can’t censor it” and then some countries were just like FINE THEN WE JUST WONT SHOW THAT EPISODE but then it’s like super important episodes that leave fans super lost so people get pissed
@@emilyyant8347 Idk about that, I feel like they changed it unnecessarily. When Steven asks what Ruby and Sapphire are doing, in the original version Lapis answers "flirting" but in the Swedish dub she says "dillar" or "villar" (it's a bit difficult to hear) and that basically means "dawdling" or "being distracted". It's really odd because the Swedish translation of the word "flirting" is very similar to the English word so they could easily have Lapis say "flirting" in Swedish too. And when Ruby and Sapphire are talking in the original, Ruby tells Sapphire to focus, and Sapphire answers "I'm trying, but all I wanna look at is you", and Ruby replies "Don't worry, you can look at me when you're running for home". The first sentence in the Swedish dub, when Ruby has asked Sapphire to focus, Sapphire says "Jag försöker, jag har problem med koncentrationen" (I'm trying, I'm having problems concentrating) and Ruby answers "Ingen fara, fokusera på segern när du springer runt" (Don't worry, focus on winning when you run). I feel like they could have easily made a version of the dub where Ruby and Sapphire's relationship wasn't erased. Why add the extra bit about Sapphire not being able to concentrate when she just as easily could have said "All I wanna look at is you" in Swedish? And why make it about Sapphire focusing on winning when the sentence was about how she could look at Ruby while running? I get that maybe they had to change that sentence slightly since baseball isn't a popular sport in Sweden, and Swedish kids might not understand what "running for home" means, but they could have changed it to "Don't worry, you can look at me when you run" and the meaning wouldn't have been lost
Crewniverse: well Russia is calling ruby a boy rebecca.. Rebecca: ...well make a wedding episode then Crewniverse: ..Rebecca that won't solve anythi- Rebecca: *PUT RUBY IN THE DRESS*
That’s why it’s called an indirect kiss. An indirect kiss is when someone drinks or eats something and then another person places their mouth on the same exact spot. In this case, Steven drank the juice box from a straw and Connie drank the juice box from the same straw as well.
@Almighty Sagittarius intimate and sexual are two very different things. It is a highly intimate activity but it's not a sexual activity because gems do not have a sex, they reproduce asexually.
Fusion is the manifestation of two or more beings relationship, so it definitely COULD be sexual, if those people relationship was. Likewise if the relationship was friendly, it would be friendly, and so on.
I was literally about to comment on that. It was backwash, she drank his backwash and because of his healing spit, her eyesight got better. And the indirect kiss was using the same straw for the drink. :O
Workers: What are you thinking, Sugar? Gay non-binary wedding? Sugar: Gay non-binary wedding. And put it in one of the most important episodes so that the homophobic countries have to air it. And for the countries that say Ruby is a guy, make Ruby the one in the wedding dress.
Well you can't censor Reunited!! Rebecca literally just went "try me" with that entire episode. Putting the "male" character in the relationship in a dress, and putting a gay wedding in the same episode with the most plot importance of any other episode in the show. 😂
Actually, they can just wait until the next episode and show random clips here and there of everything happening and change certain voice lines, without having to show the original episode where everything changed. A bit unfulfilling and such, but it would be more than possible, and quite honestly, very easy.
i don't understand why they'd change Sapphire's lines for the swedish audience, Sweden is one of the most accepting countries and were one of the first to legalise gay marriage
bc kids dude. the sweds know that it could be to early for that stuff, nothing wrong with that tbh. they know its fine but still to early for that stuff
Either they'll snip it or not air the episode. Ironic, consideriny the Diamond twist that comes during and after it. That's gonna sacrifice continuity.
An indirect kiss was referring to connie drinking from Steven’s juice box. There was never a forehead kiss. You had to watch the episode once to know that
Some countries changed the gender of ruby to male instead of female. And I know they don't have genders.(edit: I personal like how in "Reunited" the crewuniverse just did a big "FUC YOU!" to all the countries that changed her gender.)
2:28 Steven didn't kiss Connie on the forehead, her eyes got healed from the backwash of a juicebox. Guess fact checking was a little too much for Screen Rant.
They lie and say the gems are genderless and then promote lesbian relationships. They should have just been upfront about having lesbian characters. It's almost counter productive to their mission. Ok "this ok and be proud"....but we wont be honest about what we are doing/going to do because it is somehow wrong to do so.
@@jabari1027 Rebecca is non-binary and uses she/they pronouns. So while it is false to say she ONLY uses they/them, it's also false to say she only uses she/her either.
2:32 it's not called indirect kiss because he "kissed her on the forehead". He never did that. It's referring to how Connie accidentally drank Steven's backwash by sharing his juice and that's how his spit healed her eyes
You're right, I noticed he said that inaccurately too. But would you have preferred that he kissed Connie on the forehead? Showing a little more intimacy between the two? I'd love it if that's how it happened. Or do you think that that wouldn't suit Steven?
Wow, you're so right. They're already battle partners and I mean IMMENSELY good at fighting together (you'll notice if you closely look at the way they fight against Pearl in their training). They're already best friends AND they've fused. They really are just fine the way they are.
Cartoon Network: “Hey we want to launch a cartoon where a kid does the Heimlich Maneuver to save sometimes life and a character picks her nose.” Other countries: “INAPPROPRIATE!”
TV station in homophobic country "Hey we're gonna start airing this show about gay space rocks that's totally cool right?" Country: "Wait...what are they?" TV Station: "...Space Rocks." Country: "No, no, the what was the word before that?" TV Station: "...about?" Country: "Hmmm...ok" *side eyes Steven Universe*
WHAT?!? I didn't even know Sadie and Lars actually kissed until now. What have ive been doing in life... Ive been shipping them for life I didnt even know it was actually canon
EXACTLY! My jaw dropped that Sadie and Lars already had a serious shiz going on while I've been teetering around, thinking they're just being a tease with their feelings. WTH
I didn’t know that episode existed, either!! But if you watch it, after they kiss they get into an argument and from then on their relationship is super rocky.
banana studio idk if it's canon anymore, what with Sadie now being a rock star and Lars being a pink, potentially immortal human(?) commanding a team of rogue Gems through unexplored regions of space.
SilverFoxUchiha Im not even mad about that one lol It was meant to be a dirty joke They just decided the kids were smart enough to get it 😂 But it takes nothing away from the plot 😂
I didn't notice Meat Beat Mania was a euphemism till watching a video like this. It blew right over my head and I'm 42 years old. I'm sure young children will also miss it or not give a fuq because if they know what it means they already are not embarrassed about it and will think they are cool cause they caught the secret joke.
_Rebecca: Alright everyone! For the wedding, Ruby needs to wear a dress and Sapphire needs to wear a tuxedo!_ _Workes: ok!_ *_episodes airs_* _Russia and other homophobic countries: _*_TRIGGERED_* _The Crewniverse: _*_shows middle finger and putting their sunglasses on_*
OtraChicaDeRU-vid GIRL WE KNO. ya kno kid read the comments and luv steven universe then see this. i'm 10 and i kno more then that. this is what happened. don't say that kinda stuff on thing kid watch. same thing with The Real Jotaro. u make me sick.😣😒😤this goes to all these people.
Why would they put flashes if they KNOW about people with epilepsy? If they don't know about that, then lotsss of people are gonna have a seizure without any damn warning signs.
The homophobia around Garnet makes me so angry. It's so unnecessary. GOD FORBID TWO CHARACTERS LOVE EACH OTHER. GARNET IS LITERALLY _MADE OF LOVE_ HOW DARE THEY TRY TO CENSOR THAT. ... Okay, I'm also a lesbian, so I may be taking it a little bit personally lol. Garnet is my favorite character.
It's called skipping an episode and using clips of important story material as "flashbacks" to explain everything. A tad unfulfilling, yes, but it would still get the point across. This is how lol
Screen Rant never watched this show, and don't even know that the guitarist they're talking about is Greg. This list is from some throw away article they hardly read and is just here to abuse your interest in the show for views.
For the 'indirect kiss' title in Bulgaria, i can explain it by the fact that we dont have this as a phrase. They could have done a literal translation but it would likely confuse children and trouble adults. Also it just sounds bad for a title :/
i dont think they would've said ''we dont have this as a phrase'' if they weren't from bulgaria probably ''they dont have this as a phrase'' would be much more suitable if it was that way
Wording difference makes sense for titles to be changed. You're translating into a different language. It makes sense. And at least then they're not pulling an America with the "Sorcerer's" Stone.
side note- it wasn't the kiss on the forehead, (2:30) the indirect kiss was Steven's backwash in the apple juice he gave to Connie. i.e. sharing the same drink with the same straw.
Netflix also censors a looot of stuff! like in Jailbreak, they cut the scene where ruby and sapphire were running towards eachother and hugged! Netflix... Im ashamed...
@@sintyke232 no gender is not equal to sex :D so you belong to the ones "Superpokefan1244" mentioned in the first comment. although it's nothing to belief in, it's a fact.
I just about threw my phone across the room seeing that there was a whole section basically dedicated to Ruby and Sapphire censors. The Answer is such a beautiful episode, how could they just ban it in places!? :(
Wait... WHAT? Sweden??? HOMOPHOBIC??????? WTF SWEDEN since when is Sweden homophobic?!?!?! Also the line they censored was just hypocritical. Swedes always talk about sexual things... xDD
While I don't know about Sweden, I have met homophobes here in Norway. They are rare, but they exist (and they are rightfully stigmatized). While unlikely, it is entierly possible for a homophobe to end up in charge of localization.
sometimes we change the dialogue to not have it sound like its just been run through google translate honestly, if you read between the lines, its basically saying "yeah, im having trouble concentrating because ive been very distracted by you"
Steven never kissed Connie on the forehead. She drank a juice box after him. Good to know you don't do your research on these episodes. Or even watch them, considering that it's REALLY obvious if you've seen the scene.
@@l-DrFizz-l it's actually to do with the frequency of the flashes, 8-30Hz tends to be the danger range for most people with light triggered epilepsy. The biggest impact is going to be people with photophobic disorders in general, like migraine syndromes, autistic spectrum disorders, sensory overload phenomena, etc.
A lot of languages don't have a word that means "single" as in "not in a relationship" So it's translated to "alone" because the other option would have been to say "not in a relationship" and that's... Way too long haha. So yeah I'm 100 % it is changed cause I heard it but it needed to be changed in some cases.
Okay, just thought I might say this, because I see a lot of people going off about this. Gems do not have genders, is correct, and wrong at the same time. The GEM, the actual ROCK that is the source of their power, does not have a gender. Its an inanimate object. HOWEVER, the FORM that they take, does. Why else would they go by female pronouns? Why would Steven call Rose mom? Why would they have female builds, clothing, and voices? There is a difference from the gem itself and the physical form, y’all.
Yeah, their sex is asexual, but their genders are all female, at least amongst the ones we see. They probably don’t even have a concept of gender, and just happen to look female to humans
Kiki's African Hair Brading they all identify as females. almost all of the present as female, as well as use female pronouns. if you use strictly female pronouns, you are female.
When I introduced Steven universe to my 7 year old sister (who was 6 at the time) she LOVED the show. We both enjoy watching it together, and sadly we can't watch the other series because Netflix hasn't added the others. But, anyway she knew straight away Ruby was a girl since garnet was a girl, she got confused why there was two girls kissing in jailbreak, but I explained to her girls can like eachother too and, she seemed fine with that.
Exactly. Things look violent with or without them. Personally I think the censorship or non-inclusion of physical impact just teaches kids to be blind to the effect that possible violent actions from them would have on others.
@@dumzoawillofficalfpdd4565 As a fellow malaysian, Agreed. They are many extremism in my country. No gays, atheist being hunted down.Specific race has to be in a specific religion, its a disaster.
It also makes sense to censor things depending on the culture. The age of consent is lower in other countries, so shows brought to the US will likely have those romantic and intimate scenes cut or edited (despite it being perfectly fine in the country of origin). Or the buddhist sign that is easily mistaken for a swastika. Many Asian films and cartoons have them, but they usually get cut in the US despite being completely innocent. Even simpler things. A korean cartoon about Korean history has the main character eating dog (back when lots of people did it). That would never fly in the US. It isnt necessarily wrong, but the audience would see it as bad. I think that it isnt so much the networks being bigots, so much as them knowing that certain things will have them being harassed by angry parents who just to conclusions about messages being taught. That being said, I think things would be better if we didnt edit anything. Lots of editing is useless anyway like avoiding showing fight contact or bleeping curse words (we all know what theyre saying anyway).
Thank you for understanding. The narrator keeps on saying, "in other countries [mention banned content], and it's so weird they would ban it". It's different country with different culture
@@bobyford8051 I felt this for the violence mostly, here sensual things even when sorta explicit are fine (at least before recently), but not violence so I wasn't surprised much that it was removed
I just don't understand. It's a show all about excepting who u are and it's OK to be gay. If they were so against it why did they even bother playing it let alone all the extra editing to make it "appropriate".
@TheProphetOfHate I know people who have been raised by same sex couples and been fine. I can't speak on behalf on the LGBT community but personally a child with a set of parents is better than a child with no parents at all. I mean the Earth is already overpopulated and there are orphans or children who have been abandoned by their biological parents, so I don't really see the harm in taking in kids who need the guardians. I know that you may have already have set your own opinion on the community since there are so many crazies being portrayed in the media, but please know some of us are sane and don't believe in everything the community believes in.
I think the reason why I fell in love with this show is that it actually showed same sex relation ships for a kids show as well as other important topics like body acceptance and just generally learning to understand those different from you. It’s kind of sad other countries have to go and do that to this day and age 🤷♂️
Curty 29 Some advice: Calm down, stop getting angry at people over this. Rebecca Sugar herself makes no secret about characters like Ruby and Sapphire representing same sex relationships, and she's a wonderful human being for doing it. There's a difference between the in-universe logic of Steven Universe and what the characters represent and mean to actual real people.
I disagree. I feel like Cartoons are no longer exciting or have interesting plots because the creators/animators are only interested in squeezing as much romance and homosexual scenes into their episodes as they can. It's no longer about fun characters, or a good plot outlines, but about forcing romance and/or LGBT views onto children as much as they can. I mean look at "Ed, Edd, n' Eddy" that show lasted for over a decade and all it was about was the characters coming up with elaborate ways to get candy. that may not sound like an interesting plot idea, but it was SO popular it lasted for 11 YEARS, and that show barely had any romance if any at all. EVERYTHING about the newer cartoons are about random, off the wall craziness, romance and political correctness. These cartoons are meant to be watched by kids, yet these creators are shoving real world adult issues down their throats.
Something smart Rebecca did was in the episode that ruby and sapphire married. Some countries changed ruby's gender to male to make a heterosexual couple, so ruby was shown in the dress in that episode. Also to stop the episode being taken down, a huge part of the life was at the end of the episode.
Jokes on you The middle east band the whole damn show ! They only dubbed season 1 (not counting "so many birthdays" , "lars and the cool kids" get dubbed but didn't aired for some reasons) and a couple episodes from season 2
Did you know in a few countries they completely changed ruby to identifying as male? But sugar purposely put her in a dress during the wedding so they couldn't deny it!😎
*Them They have no genders at all. And simply choose a pronoun for one another for ease of identification outside of the use of names. And yeah, there are ways to hide it in other countries. It's called skipping an episode and using clips of important story material as "flashbacks" to explain everything. A tad unfulfilling, yes, but it would still get the point across.
You can tell when this guy was about to talk about homophobia he was inside like... “*sigh* okay ya’ll here’s what you already know is happening so better mention it now.”
Based on newer medical data. The Heimlich manoeuvre is considered dangerous and possible mortal, we do not teach it in first aid and schools anymore. We teach and are being taught to bow over and clap on the back. That and a few things that simply can’t be understood in the language are the only ones I think that are right ;)
Alright. Some of these edits make no sense but others are pretty expected for the regions that did them. Remember, Russia literally has a no gay propaganda law. No LGBT+ content of any kind can be distributed to children/minors. This includes sex ed information and media.
@@Rumda so is Stevonnie given fusion has been stated as a metaphor for sex, which would mean every second she's on screen we are watching child pornography.
I love how Rebecca Sugar made Ruby wear the dress in "Reunited", goodluck censoring that to the countries that changed Ruby's gender to male (even though she's technically genderless) I applaud you Rebecca Sugar👏👏👏
