Earlier on people seemed to be saying "It's on the back It wont show". Since I started caring about the look of my work even from the back the quality of my work has improved a great deal. Being conscious of the neatness really helps you do a better job. Thank You.

That’s a good point. And I agree! I think the folks who talk about leaving the back messy are trying to keep new stitchers from getting discouraged and quitting. Also, some don’t want to have to “work” that hard at their hobby, and I can understand that.

Hi! thanks for your reply. I have a collection of pieces some of which I haven't finished for various reasons. When I am doing any of my crafts It is the pleasure I get from crafting that matters to me. I suspect that family may admire the work you do but don't really want it on their walls. That's Ok with me. I love it all anyway.

My grandmother used to say that ”the back should be as nice and tidy as the front”. After 50+ years of hand stitching, I have yet to match her skills, but I think of her wherever I pick up my needle and thread. 😁💖

@@NotoriousNeedle I'm a beginner that started out with stitching snarky phrases & back then I was looking for the fastest option. I've just started a few projects from Mr.xstitch mag, so it's a bit more challenging and I'm looking into different methods, but I'm mainly doing it to relax & to solve the 'puzzle'. If I felt I had to make it neat & railroad it would stress me out too much. I think I will do it if I make a (small) gift for someone, but I'm nearsighted so I wouldn't notice it anyway.

In 1964, my third grade teacher taught the class to stitch our own designs on colored burlap with yarn. (I think mine was a mermaid under a palm tree on a yellow background!) She always said the back should be almost as neat as the front. To this day, I think of her every time I look at the back of my work!

This video was recommended because I’ve been searching for tips and tricks! I have a sixth option for you to consider. I make a confetti stitch with one strand of floss, making each leg of the stitch twice, tie the ends together creating a very tiny knot, rethread the needle and wind floss through/around the stitch on the back. It does not create a bump and never comes undone no matter how tight the finished piece is stretched by the framer! Thanks for a great tutorial. I’m definitely going to try weaving into the fabric the next time I use Aida… Shelly

This is very cool! I have used the bury method, but only bury once. But mostly the travel method because it´s easier mainly, but also because I have found that no one really looks that closely at pictures once they are finished and hung. Most aida cloth won’t really show the thread behind it unless you look closely. *I* can see it, but no one else really does. We are always most critical of our own work. :-) Thanks for showing me a bunch more ways to do this!

Thank you so much for this video! I've taken up cross-stitching as a hobby in the past few years and this current pattern is the first one where there are single stitches way out in the middle of nowhere by themselves. I couldn't wrap my head around how to do them gracefully. The "bury the tail twice" method has worked wonderfully and now I have some more knowledge stored in the ol' brain :)

I love the planning aspect of cross stitch and you’ve given me several new techniques to try and think about :) up to now I’ve just been traveling but I’m trying to move on to more complex projects that I might want to frame and I’m definitely going to try some of these other techniques to make the back of my project cleaner / not show traveling threads from the front

Burying twice is such an excellent idea! I think I’m going to start doing that with my confetti stitches. I would bury once and it didn’t feel secure at all.

Great video, but regarding the pin stitch if you go up and down on the right side of the stitch and then up and down on the left gives a nice secure anchor and you end on the back side not the front. Hope I explained that ok.😊

I am also doing pin stitches when I have a single confetti stitch :) you can do the pin stitch below the x you just stitched, it just gets a little more difficult the smaller your aida gets. I don't do the pin stitch with coming from the middle and then going up and down, I just go middle - down - middle - down (sometimes only one time even), so it is possible to do when there's stitched over it already. I really like it for confetti stuff! Totally not my credit though - I saw this on some other video 😊 thanks for addressing confetti though, I was searching for confetti tips multiple times and didn't find much!

Thanks for the input! One of the things I love about cross stitch is how adaptable it is, so there’s a bajillion different ways to do stuff. Peacock & Fig has a good video on a “mini” pin stitch, and it sounds a lot like you described. Dana shows it going under an X she’s already stitched. Looks like a great idea in a pinch! I’ll see if I can find the link.

Can you teach us georgian cross stitch ? The patterns look difficult to follow, do they count stitches ? How ? I'd never be able to count the stitches in the pattern or the stitches im doing on my fabric, do they trace ? I dont think so, then how they do it ? The cross stitching and the same patterns with thi satin stitch ( i dont know the name of that embroidery, like mostly white on white table clothes etc )

The pin stitch is often used with linen as well. In fact that’s where I’ve seen it mostly used. It’s nearly invisible on linen.

I learned how to do this through practice and mistakes. The Internet didn't exist fifty years ago. If I showed someone the pieces I did in the beginning vrs what I do now, you can definitely see the progression of my talent and skill. It's great these tutorials exits. I had to go to the library to find books on embroidery and follow the step, by step pictures. I learned how to decorate cakes the same way and ended up decorating wedding cakes for a living. I eventually stopped decorating cakes because I turned a hobby into something I had to do and that took the fun out of it. I grew to hate decorating cakes, and have not decorated a cake in over thirty years. I have had many offers to sell my needle work, but I refused to do it. I don't want the same thing happened to this hobby. For me, having to do something into wanting to do something really takes the pleasure out if it

I learned to cross stitch before the internet, too! Luckily, my Mom has been talented in multiple fiber arts since before I was born, and had the patience to try to teach me a few when I was young. Cross stitch was the only one I really liked. And to learn more, I either taught myself or got a book from the library. I’m sorry that cake decorating was ruined for you. Thanks for sharing. The internet is a mixed blessing. But Isn’t it wonderful that now we can learn things from people, even if we don’t know them?

@@NotoriousNeedle my mom would always buy embroidery kits and she let me use them. She didn't know how to embroider except real basic stitches. I think she purchased them because I enjoyed stitching. The Internet is great. Cross stitching is my favorite too

Hi, how fast do you cross stitch ? I am feeling slow and I don't know if it's normal or not. For example, for stitching a square 5cm in 2 colours, it takes me several hours. Am I slow ?

When you've used the loop start method and you've done that one stitch, you have to cut it off and essentially cut the loop away, how do you use that thread afterwards? How do you secure it to your needle? Thanks in advance ^^ When I tried it, I had to tie it to my needle but I assume there's a better way? 😅

You can either use one of the two strands you get after you cut it (for half the length), or use a fresh, full-length strand. When not stitching confetti, I don't always use the loop method. I often bury the tail end of the thread in the first few stitches.

I got a question i want to make a tactile braille cross stitch with the squares representing the dots but even through i tried this method it still makes the crosses with less threads feel almost as thick as the crosses with a lot more thread due to the "knots" on the back do you got any tips?

Hmm, have you tried stitching the braille separate and away from the other stitches? Maybe keep an area around the braille stitches empty? I wish I could be more help. I don’t read braille and I don’t know anyone who does. If you could find someone who does (assuming you don’t, of course), you could ask them to test it out and help you decide if the braille stitches are thick enough by contrast to the other stitches.

@@NotoriousNeedle i keep 1 row of stitches empty between each "dot" but by doing that i either would need to travel which i fear would cause problems with the sensation and the back finishing feels to me as if it causes the dots to feel to different

I’m in a huge dilemma. I’m working on 14 count white aida. The project has words-small letters (capitals are only 4 squares tall,). I am using black thread for the wording and it’s backstitched with a single thread, how can I hide the tail so the shadow of the black tail doesn’t show thru the white fabric when it’s framed?

Hi Sheryl, I’m guessing that with letters so small, there might be only one square between each letter of the same word. If that’s right, you can travel your floss across the one square in the back and it won’t really be seen from the front. Now most likely, the words are going to be more than one square apart (makes it easier to read). Between words, bury the floss under the back stitches. You don’t have to bury in a straight line. You can push your needle under a few stitches, pull the floss through, then do it again under more stitches. Then start new floss for each new word. Hope that helps!

I can, but I don’t know why you would want to see it. The pin stitch is used to secure a thread, so it would always be next to another stitch, or underneath it.

Hi Sonja! Couching is an embroidery technique that is rare (if at all) in cross stitch. So I won’t be covering that on this channel. My favorite embroidery channel is Sarah Humphrey - she’s amazing! And definitely has videos on couching. You should check her out. 😊
