Very interesting. I live in the UK and currently invest in the S and P 500 distribution. Since I visited Japan, I have noticed this weakened yen and have thought about investing into a distribution ETFs that is the Japanese equivalent of the USA, as you stated in the video. Would I still need a foreign savings account and a visa?
@AEconomiae
@AEconomiae 4 месяца назад
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. If I understand your question correctly, you want to invest in Japanese yen from abroad. Is this correct? If your stock broker gives you access to the Japanese market, you might be able to do it without too much hassle. I reckon Interactive brokers permit this kind of operations. However you are exposed to currency fluctuations, which may be an increased risk.

Thank you for your reply. In your case it appears that you could just use your Vanguard account and would not need to open a local account

Hello. Thank you for watching and commenting. All I can tell you is what I personally use: Interactive brokers is the service I use, is available in India, and gives quite a wide access to world markets. Please check if that fits your needs.

Can I get any visa to be a trader in japan?
@AEconomiae
@AEconomiae 4 месяца назад
Thank you for your comment. Trader (I do not know if you are referring to finance or business ) might fall under specialist visas. I am not a specialist so I would recommend reaching out to your local Japanese embassy based on what is written on the following page of the ministry of foreign affairs: www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/long/index.html

Amazing video, When I went to Japan for vacation a friend of mine referred me to a financial adviser sometime ago and we got talking about investment and money. I started investing with $110k and in the first 2 months, my portfolio was reading $294,800. Crazy right!, I decided to reinvest my profit and get more interesting. For over a year we have been working together making consistent profit just bought my second home 2 weeks ago and care for my family.

How to invest in private KK companies of Japan plz reply me!
@AEconomiae
@AEconomiae 5 месяцев назад
By private Japanese company, do you mean unlisted ones? In that case you would need to work with an investment fund and private equity. This is usually easier if you are a qualified investor. I do not have connections there. If it is listed companies, then a brokerage account would be your first step

I am a foreigner in my 50`s living in Japan (J wife and daughter). I have 3~4 million yen to invest. Any suggestions? I may go home in 4-5 years since I own properties and have other investments abroad.

Thank you for watching the video and commenting. I am not a financial advisor and cannot give you specific recommendations. The amount is too low and the time period is too short for real estate, in theory. The new NISA account could be an option to invest with interesting tax deductions (dividends and capital gains). Broad base index funds and ETFs are usually best for most retail investors and available via the NISA accounts. Depending on your other investments, it could be a good option to diversify your holdings. I assume you want to invest in the Japanese market. Alternatively, if you do not need the money as part of your emergency fund, time limited cash deposits in US or Australian dollars could be interesting given the high interest rates. So banks over one year and up to several years. Please note that your tax situation might influence the above.

@@AEconomiae Thank you for that and apologies for not mentioning that I do understand you're not to dispense financial advice willy-nilly. Given my situation, all points at NISA (all my family members have already applied) and LCDs in foreign currencies indeed. I am happy to report that my country does not apply double taxation and I do have emergency funds as well and additional pension funds in both countries. Thank you for what you do and keep up the great work!

Americans can't invest in foreign stocks easily, right?
@AEconomiae
@AEconomiae Месяц назад
Thank you for your question. It depends on whether you are living in the USA or abroad. If you are in the USA you can use stockbrokers like Interactive Brokers to buy individual stocks but more often ETFs or mutual funds denominated in USD to invest in non-US focused indexes. No exchange rate risks, better liquidity and easier tax filing. If you are based abroad, because of US security and banking regulations, some financial institutions will not let US citizens open brokerage accounts or buy investment products. And if they allow it, they will limit what products they have access to (I witnessed it in Singapore, and here in Japan). And then US citizens will have to file taxes in their country of residence and the US too, making it more difficult. So, indeed it is not easy for US citizens living abroad. I hope that helps.

@@AEconomiae thanks a lot for the research and information! I'm indeed a long-term resident in Japan. I'm finding it very difficult to invest in JPY being American and with the horrible exchange rate 😭

@AEconomiae Месяц назад
You are welcome. Indeed your situation is a tough one to be in. I unfortunately don't have much more information for a US citizen in Japan. NISA might be an option though I am not sure you would be able to open one. And the exchange rate, I am with you! Sorry I cannot be more helpful

Don't forget about the tax in Japan which is the worst things that all your income made will be gone and knowing the income, you made in the year need to be paid same as next year as interim, what's the point to stay and make business in such place when you know all your income will be vanished slowly, which more other countries in the world have better facilities without any tax burden. Is only the idiot who will think make such thing and invest because the country is called Japan.
@AEconomiae

Thank you for your comment. I encourage you to listen not only to this video but the one titled "how to pay less taxes in Japan" as well as the recently released "Beat the market - 5 Japan investment hacks". You will discover that you can, legally, reduce your tax burden while investing in Japan. Do not hesitate to talk with a tax accountant before making any decision. Thank you again
