Thanks Jon for unboxing my mug on your channel. I appreciate your kind comments and your recommendations about consistency while throwing. I've never made more of 20 of anything consistently within a short period of time. Mostly because of space (I'm in a shared studio space and I pay for the space on my shelf) and time to finish off the pots I throw. Whatever I throw, I have to make sure I can make sure I have time to trim and finish it off before I make anything else, or else things tend to dry out/I run out of space on my shelf. However, it's a great challenge and maybe I will throw a large set of pots and recycle the clay afterwards.

Another idea: last year I created a private Facebook page for local customers only. As I unload the kiln, I post pictures. It is amazing. People who are online at that moment start telling me they want the pottery. It’s crazy to try to keep posting pictures as I go back and mark other pottery sold! It sells fast and they pick it up here at my studio. People have to ask to join the page, so I don’t feel like I am bugging non-customers on FB, trying to sell my pottery. I am considering posting a time for the sale instead of just a random 9 PM posting!

I'd love to see a video on how to photograph your pottery, I find I'm not great at photography so it's hard to take really great shots to put on a web page, social media, etc...

Not a professional myself but id say some important things are probably to use a neutral background and good lighting. My artwork always looks more true to life in daylight but totally crummy under yellow lights and usually even LED lighting

The studio looks great! I really love your wall mural backdrop for your mug display. To help manage the echo, in addition to the rest of your equipment getting set up, you need some soft things in there to help absorb sound--rugs, curtains, soft chairs, or soft-textured wall/ceiling panels will do the most to get rid of the echo. Generally, spaces with less echo have lots of flat surfaces at irregular angles (trapezoids and pyramids) and/or lots of soft things like carpet and wall and ceiling sound panels. The most echo-y spaces are boxes with hard floors and smooth walls and ceilings, just like your new studio.

Focusing on retail wholesale at local gift shops coffee houses and shows is more important than doing ‘just’ online because talking in person allows someone to really connect with the maker.

I set myself a goal a few years ago to throw 100 bowls for our local Empty Bowls event. I was successful and my throwing vastly improved. Although, I kept losing track of how many bowls I'd made and I probably ended up with more than 100.

Wow the lighting is great! Didn’t hear much echo and when your equipment is in there it will be even better. OH,, and I envy (in a good way) the space you have to move around. White walls! You will know when there dirty but you also know when its clean and there’s no light reflection of color to mess with you. Great idea! One thing that messes with me in creativity is feeling the need to clean up before I start. The smaller the space the harder it is to clean; at least that’s my experience. Can’t wait to see the grand tour. So sorry you don’t feel well. Take a break! I got my new tool from Old Forge Creations. Can’t wait to give it a try. Thanks for clueing us in on him. Wish he talked about what he was doing but I like his style. Sharon at MudCreek

Love the new studio Jon. Great information for selling, I'm getting my first Kiln delivered next month, luckily I've got friends that have fired things for me, but I can now start to make more pieces and sell more (with luck) . I have learned so much from you so thanks Jon, wish me luck. P. S. I won't be in competition with you as I'm in the UK. Ha ha. Cheers Bob

Yay for you new studio!!! In the past I started at a monthly open market place, but after 2 years of year round, the heat of the summer, and such got to be too much for wavering sales. So I have a booth at a local mostly handmade gift shop, where I work one day a month to cover my rent, only 10% of the sales goes to the owner, and the rest is mine. I restock monthly to keep it fresh. I take commissions there too. Also do a few arts and crafts fairs in the fall/winter months 2 are indoors. That's a huge help. While not making big money, it pays for my clay and glaze habit, and keeps me as busy as I want to be. I don't really do much online just friends and family by request via FB. The studio is looking awesome! Keep doing what you're doing!!!

Online pro - you keep a much higher amount of cost. Con - time and energy marketing. Retail pro - little marketing time and energy. Con - loss of 'branding' control.

I know how you can fix the echo. You could use those black foam pads gamers use and like glue or tape it to ur walls or Ceiling I think that it looks cool but just a suggestion

Hi Jon, how much insulation do you have above your head? I'm lucky I don't have to sell.....I go to a local market once a month and collect donations for HOSPICE....... Keeps the inventory down when I give pots away when folk donate. Your energy and enthusiasm along with your ability are a key factor in doing well. Thanks for sharing!

I think the more items you get in the new studio, the better the echo will get. I've just been selling my pieces through my personal facebook. If someone wants something they see, they just message me. I've been debating whether i should make a facebook or instagram (i dont have instagram) just for my pottery. I don't know why it makes me so nervous to do so. Sooner or later I've got to get that fear out of my head and just do it.

I haven't started selling my pottery yet, as I am curently building an inventory. There is an art town near me. I am planning to set up a road side display of my pottery around other road side venders. I am getting together business cards, banners and tables and such. Also, a tax ID number, illegalities and trying to figure out how to take payments...cash, checks or cards. Its all coming together though. Exciting. Thank you for all your suggestions. They are really helpful. ❤

I have a big ? Is hand slaked clay from a river bed worth anything? My old art teacher use to use river bank clay from a local river and used it at the school and I always wondered is it ok to use and sell ?

@@Jonthepotter Get your stuff moved in. Add more shelving, bulletin boards for kid art and pegboards for tools. All empty rooms with hard surfaces echo so soften the wall by increasing texture with stuff.
@tangerinejukebox
@tangerinejukebox 5 лет назад
@@Jonthepotter As soon as you get anything softer and just generally more stuff in there, it'll improve. In a music studio, adding a rug and sofas would help, but obviously, nobody wants a clay-coated rug in the muddle of a pottery studio ;)
