Great video, thank you for putting it together.I am a beginner. I learned my woodworking in terms of what I could work on was severely hampered by workshop size. I decided to pursue making guitars, electric at this time. This is along the lines of hoping to build an instrument called a crwth. The spelling is correct, and I won’t explain what it is so you can search on it.

I really like RC Tonewoods. They have some great wood and some great scraps. They will work with you if you need anything special like cuts, etc.

Never heard of the Luthier's Forum. Got on there the other night and spent a good chunk of today writing up some posts. My brain can barely handle the dopamine surge. Truly awesome there's a resource like that with such a huge archive. I live for that stuff! Thanks for making this video -- now onto the rest of it after watching the first couple minutes last night. Is it just me or is ADHD common in luthiers and guitar techs?

As a European (British), I am simply amazed at what is available in USA. One is lucky if one can buy a nut file or saddle blank in Europe, but perhaps it is because we make just guitars rather than building them! 🙂. Some US companies will ship, although it adds 40% to the cost typically, sometimes more (shipping + import duty + VAT + sometimes, flat courier's processing fee that makes small orders economic).

Thanks! Could you speak to setting up a shop? What are the must haves and nice to haves? Table saw, planer, drill press, router, etc. which do you need first and which do you add as you get more into it? Looking at setting up in my garage and I’m not sure what a good order is to look at getting some of the bigger tools.

Forums are great for getting traditional answers to traditional problems. Non-traditional stuff tends to be frowned upon - depending on the forum. Plans are useless when every build is a one-off experimental guitar. On the other hand, one can never have too many sources of nice wood at a decent price. Mammoth tusk etc. seems a terrible waste of irreplaceable fossils - and strikes me as being somewhat gimmicky. Luther tools are designed for dealing with traditional tasks. Does anyone make a jig that will create 20mm thick necks with a trapezoid profile and a flat triangular heel? Or a desktop PTFE neck coating station? Or a glue-up jig for carbon fiber tube and Richlite necks? Or in the more traditional vein - how about an automatic binding scraper?

Useful info as always. I've been trying to register for the luthiersforum site for over a week now, but it never works. checked spam and nothing. They just say "Contact an administrator" which is impossible to do until you're registered so I've tried three times and am about to write it off altogether, which sucks because it seems like it could be a valuable resource, but it's no good if you can't use it.
