I know this video is a little longer than usual, but I didn't want to sacrifice steps in any of the projects just to make the video shorter. All of these projects are pretty common Christmas woodworking projects that people are batching out for craft sales. If I missed any important details, let me know in the comments. I hope this video helps you out or inspires you this Christmas season with the projects that you're working on.
Thanks for watching!!

Just a tip. When you tie small knots and you don't want them to ever come undone, just place a drop of super glue on the knot. It will never come apart.

Taylor, I made a ton of snowflakes this year for sale and did very well. I also changed up the design slightly by adding a solid hexagon in the center to add my diamonds to for the larger version. For the smaller one I used two angles in the center, one at 30 degrees and the other at 60 degrees which closed up the hole in the center and gave full bearing for diamonds.
@boydstongrove

Thanks for the ideas, a solid hex was a good idea! I batched out a ton also, they were our top sellers at our Christmas Market. I’ll definitely be making them again.

@boydstongrove 10 месяцев назад
To be honest, I purposely left mine rough, and the white didn't cover on mine either, but I wanted that look so I was ok with it. Most people I sold to liked the somewhat worn, farm style look. Now the little diamonds that we hand painted covered great, but that was house grade exterior paint. Personally I liked the contrast between the solid grey pieces next to the rustic white parts.
@williammoore2259

Can not get the paint to stick to the snowflake I sanded it before I cut them down to size what do you think I use good paint any help would be appreciated thank bill
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove Год назад
That's so strange. I almost always use Rustoleum 2 in1 and I have never had any issues. I did spray 2 coats of the white to get decent coverage. The paint we used for the grey areas was flat interior house paint we picked up from the oops rack at Home Depot. We always snag the little test sizes from there. Keep in mind weather plays a huge factor, if you're working outside, humidity and extreme hot or cold temps will really effect how the paint acts.

Wow i love the tree and snowflake and snowmans. Now want to make. Think i would make another adjustment to snowflake. Instead the long poecw in back id angle them too so it can lay flat. Also can u explain how u know what angle to cut the adjust u did i did one 45 and the smaller ones was at 30 degree? Thanks. And i want to make smaller snowflakes
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove Год назад
I figured out the angle I used was just by trial and error. As you can see in the vid, the pieces weren’t exactly perfect, but it was covered up by the diamond pieces. I like the idea of it all laying flat like you said, but that long back piece is a main support to hold the whole snowflake together so I’m not sure how it would work without it, definitely something to think about!
@jimfulmer3526
@jimfulmer3526 11 месяцев назад
did you have to prepare the cedar snowflake prior to painting? Did you have adhesion or bleed thru issues? I did a test paint on a sample that I'm using and the primer isn't adhering very well.
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 11 месяцев назад
Great question. For the snowflakes, I used plain, 4" pressure treated pickets. They are a lot thinner and cheaper here in Florida, than the cedar ones. They had been sitting in my shop for a while so they were dry and I did lightly sand them, just to get rid of the loose stuff on the surface. I did a have a little trouble with coverage, I ended up putting a few coats on them, but I wasn't concerned with complete coverage, because a lot of people wanted that worn, farmhouse look. Thanks for watching!

That white snowman was what I was thinking of. Home Depot has some CHEAP spray flat white,, Then you can add the other touches to it! Instead of 'twine' why not use some really thin red or green ribbon to tie the hat,,, or even thin red and green ribbon!

Why kind of wood do you use for the 4x4's ? The pieces I see you use are free of defects and knots.
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 2 месяца назад
I got it from Home Depot. Our local store has 2 types of 4x4s: rough construction ones, and then what I got which is supposed to be higher quality, which come with smooth corners and less knots. They are labeled as pine, but the reddish hue makes me think they something else. I did have to dig through the rack to find one with fewer blemishes. I also noticed that not all Home Depots stock these "nicer" 4x4s. Fortunately the snow men only use a small portion so you can cut around knots.

Definitely! I use boiled linseed oil a lot. It's very affordable and you can get it at most hardware stores. It just doesn't smell great so you need to let the pieces air out. Any kind of Polyurethane would work fine, long as you give it the proper dry time. I've also seen a lot of these houses painted black and they look really nice.

Each snowflake uses 12 diamond shaped pieces and 12 of the 5/8” pieces. I used standard 4” dog ear pickets. You should be able to get a couple snowflakes out of one picket. I don’t know exactly how many because I was using cut offs that I had leftover from other projects.

Hey there brother. I'm new sub. I really like what you did with all these projects. They're the definition of quick, easy (If you know what you're doing.?) Cool, Festive and inexpensive to produce, meaning you can start by making just the one, if that's you can afford. Stage it, list it as low, or temporarily out of stock, take orders, fill the orders as they come. Before you know it, you'll be working every waking moment, or taking a couple days off from your day job to kick into production mode. That was great mod on the snowflakes. That was Genius.😎

@allendrummond7271
@allendrummond7271 Год назад
Yes sir you are correct it is about the $$$, dorami, why do you think governments make national holidays, to boost th economy,encourage you to dig deep in your pockets or savings and spend like other people on your family and loved ones, or get it on credit, whatever you have to do, just do long as you aren't that person that s.o.b. that didn't put up a tree and get a shit load of presents for your kids, and family, from money you may not have. Well to some of us it's about the birth of Jesus Christ, he gave the ultimate gift, his life, so it's up to us to break that cycle with our kids and teach them better
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove Год назад
Agreed, it is not about money. I gave a majority of it away and what I did sell, I sold not much over cost and it went to help support our shop, so I kind of see it as a win, win
