OOE team, can you do a video on the pronunciation of 'v' and 'w'? I get it right when I talk to myself. In real-life situations I go back to using both sounds as I did earlier. I can't make out the difference when native speakers speak in real-life situations either, compared to the videos by native English teachers describing their difference! Is the difference not that much when you speak fast? Kindly help!
@Oxfordonlineenglish1
@Oxfordonlineenglish1 4 года назад
Hi Krishna, the main difference between the two is the lip movement. The 'v' will place your top teeth on your bottom lip. The 'w' will make a round shape with the lips and no teeth placement on them. They sound similar in a sentence but you should still hear the difference caused by the teeth in the 'v'. Hopefully that helps a little bit. Maybe we can do a lesson on these in the future!
@Krishna-nu8nv
@Krishna-nu8nv 4 года назад
@@Oxfordonlineenglish1 Thank you OOE. I actually know the difference in 'v' and 'w' pronunciation as I have seen videos by native English teachers talking about the difference between these two sounds, and I can reproduce them correctly too. But when native English speakers speak English in real-life, I am unable to hear the difference for the most part, especially when 'v' comes in the middle of a word. When 'v' comes in the middle of a word, 'v' still sounds like 'w' to me when native speakers speak (I don't hear any teeth-on-lip sound; I have been trying so hard to hear that teeth-on-lip sound but not really successful). I am a reasonably advanced user of English; so that puts me in a confused state of mind.
@Oxfordonlineenglish1
@Oxfordonlineenglish1 4 года назад
Ah, I see. In that case it is a good idea to continue your listening practice with concentrated efforts on reading the script as they speak. After you hear a word with 'v' or 'w', pause it, try to reproduce it yourself, and then play it again. See if you can build up your ability to pick out the differences. A native speaker teacher can also give you great practice!

Hi Sadick, this is a matter of a 'hard c' and 'soft c' sound. It generally depends on the following letter. A good rule is: If the letter following the 'c' is 'e or y,' the pronunciation is soft like that in 's'. This is in words like 'certain' and 'cycle'. If the letter following 'c' is anything else the pronunciation is hard like that in 'k'. This is in words like 'call' and 'come'. Hope this helps you!
