This video is a long term review of my Canyon Aeroad CF SLX roadbike that I bought in 2016 and have ridden for 35000 km! I will show and talk about everything there is to say about this bike and all the parts I replaced, changed and upgraded in the last years. I will also discuss the problems and issues I had with this bike and how they got resolved. This video was a lot of work as I go through 5 years of footage and cycling adventures of the Canyon Aeroadcf SLX roadbike!

How well does it climb? How is the stiffness? Is it comfortable on long rides? This is not your average review, unboxing or first look video. This is a honest, comprehensive, long term review of the Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 6.0. Yes, when I bought it in 2016 there actually was a 6.0 version. And there were no disc brakes if you're wondering... I will talk about all the separate parts of the bike like the looks, the price, the frame and geometry, the group-set, the wheels, the brakes, the seat, handlebars, rake shift, and more. Also all the parts I've replaced to fix problems or to make the bike more to my preference. I have asked YOU guys for questions, here on RU-vid and on my Instagram page. I have incorporated most of the questions in the video and will answer the rest in the next video which will be like a Q&A on the Aeroad! I hope you guys find this video helpful or entertaining, please let me know what you think. The topics and time codes can be found below:

Excellent review, thanks. I'm surprised at how many people seem to be criticizing Canyon after this, I thought that a) after such heavy use, it's not THAT shocking that some things will crack or get broken. It's not just 35000kms, it's 35000 kms at high speeds, high wattages in races, a lot of it on bad roads, and under -no offense- under a big guy. And b) Canyon seems to have been offering a stellar assistance, replacing things fairly when it's their fault.

Yeah I agree. Their warranty is actually pretty decent after seeing this video. If you only own one bike, I would expect Canyon to expedite their shipping times. However, I think most manufactures would take forever or go the round about method...Especially the Italians.

This is the type of review professional journalists rarely do but is much more relevant for those of us who ride a lot: what's it like to actually live with a bike. This one seems like a mixed bag. No bottom bracket issues, which is interesting as Canyon does not have a stellar reputation with BB reliability. The cracked frame and cracked fork are concerning, regardless how it happened. I'll never buy a rim brake bike again, so not concerned about the brake issues. Lots of bikes with aero wedge retention systems seem to have the slipping seatpost issue, this appears to be another one.

My go-to gear setup is a 50/34 in the front and an 11-25 in the back. 11 speed sram red etap. At 140 lbs, i dont need smaller gears for climbs unless im hitting something over 20% which is almost never. And when I decend I can still get up to 40 mph pedaling or i can just supertuck to go faster and save my evergy. I love the small gear changes. Makes it easy to keep at 25-26 mph on flats for my group rides.

This was an incredibly enjoyable video Jasper. So much RU-vid content is about the immediate present - about things that just happened. This Canyon Aeroad "story" covering several years and many thousands of kilometers felt so different - so, I dunno, refreshing. Great review of many of your great old videos. In fact, your legendary Vontoux descent video is how I found and subbed to you in the first place, at least 2 years ago. This summary of years of riding told through the lens of the bike is awesome. I ride a Canyon Endurace myself. Excellent bike - but I yearn for an Aeroad (disc) one day. Great video Jasper bravo 👏

Biggest issue I had with cheaper wheels is creaking in the rear hub. It sounds like it would come from the crankset. But really, everytime it was the rear wheel. Sometimes more sturdy quick releases fixed it, sometimes not. You feels so much faster if the only sound you hear is the wind and your tires on the road ;)
@jakubmakovech5554

Awesome thorough review. Same bike, bought at the same time, got the yellow/black version instead. No frame issues (been lucky with only one crash) but a couple of similar problems. 1. Rake adjustment insert screws are short and easily tear their threads. They come out easily if the quick release is not loose enough. 2. Did same with wheels on a Swiss tour but that was forced as the rear rim split by a nipple about 3 or 4 cm. Dead. Put in fulcrum zeros for the mountains and breaking was much better but it does look very odd! 3. Running 52 34 and 12 32 with same original length rear derailleur. As long as not cross chaining it all still works fine and changes smoothly but goes through gear cables quickly. 4. Arione seat also broke, on a runner not the seat. Never really comfortable so use an Antares now. Great speed in and out of corners. Agile. Good acceleration. Lovely looking bike and really enjoyed it for 4 years and 35000km. Been loving in tropical climate so it gets fair wear and tear from sweat and humidity but has done well. Again, great review and good to see similar problems and what to look out for.

Excellent content! My Aeroad SLX (rim brake) also had fork issues. - The aluminum rake shift inserts became loose one time, allowing the axle to fret against the carbon a bit. In Canyon's design, the axle only contacts the fork's carbon on the front side of the dropout. I'm a bit concerned the carbon contact points could wear more quickly than the aluminum inserts, increasing dependence on the the rake shift inserts for holding the wheel securely. - My fork also had to be replaced because of a crease in the steerer. In my case, I had installed a new Giant 1-1/4 stem at the topmost position. I attribute the issue partly to the Giant stem design, which uses a vertical clamp, rather than a diagonal clamp like the Canyon V13. In addition, Canyon mandates its compression plug to be installed at a fixed depth in the steerer. Only the bottom of my Giant stem had support from the compression plug. On the replacement fork, I installed a full-depth compression plug instead of Canyon's small plug. I switched to a Ritchey WCS stem which has a diagonal (not vertical) clamp.

Hi Jasper and other Aeroad fanboys! About that 6800 front derailleur (@22:09): you can already improve the shifting a lot by mounting the cable left/clockwise on the locknut in stead of right/counterclockwise (like it was on your video). This way the angle/distance is better and the 'dead point' is gone. Keep up the sharing!
@jasperverkuijl
@jasperverkuijl 4 года назад
yeah I could see how that works, however this is not how it's supposed to be. the cable wont go in the little ''slot'' thats carved in the derailleur arm. but if it works it works (Y)

I don't need a race bike, but I enjoy riding in a aggressive position and just want the Aeroad CF SL 7.0. I love the combination of the 105 groupset with a 58 mm deep section wheelset ... I'd would rather ride Ultegra, but the current 105 is so good and so reliable ... unbeatable. I commute by bike every day and save so much money that I want to get a racing bike as a reward for the weekend. I only ride in the flat, always full throttle and am used to an aggressive riding position from my 2001 Trek 5500 OCLV 120.

With that model of Shimano crank, we have experience crack on cranks ( 2 pcs of a front crank), yours was a compression failure due to crank tightening mistake and the low seat its because ( Mostly) there is a less or wrong application of Carbon Paste( which aside from the seat tube application, you NEED to put it also on the triangular screw slide just below the screw hole, which is part of the assembly), We lost the race because of that from a lead point. we noticed it often slips without a paste on the triangular metal part(our experience with canyon same model up to now it still works fine, a Race machine but somewhat okay in uphill and indeed built for flats and mild roll areas/ Cheers very accurate review.

I almost bought this same spec bike in 2016, but I had just purchased a new bike at the end of 2015 and didn’t want to spend this much on another new bike so soon. It was in the summer, while the Tour de France was on. They had a great deal, but I decided to wait. They didn’t have such good prices again after this so it was last year finally I decided to get a CF SL 7.0. It was around £2,400, which is good value compared to other aero bikes. I looked at a Trek Madone SL6 and it was £3,500. They are also quite a bit heavier, around 8.6kg. The Aeroad I went for also has the standard bars and stem, 58mm aero wheels, 105 group set and rim brakes. It’s a little lighter, around 7.8kg and a few hundred pounds less expensive than the disc brake version. It would have been nice to get Ultegra gears. I had a problem with the rear shifter, I think it was slightly bent when it arrived new, but have not replaced it as after having the bike for some time now I don’t think Canyon will cover this under warranty. It would probably be easier and cheaper if I just buy a new one and fit it myself. This is the main down side to buying a bike off the internet rather than having a shop where you can take it back if you are not happy. Other than that it’s a very fast bike at a good price.

Great video! I do not understand those comments, who do think now, that Canyon is a bad choice. You provided all of the information, why you changed parts (due to your preference) and the Mavic Cosmic due to insufficient braking performance. Parts got broken, as you are a hard core racer, who does not care to speed over cobbles. I ride the Canyon Ultimate CF SL 8.0 and my yearly average is around 2,500 km, which is going to rise.

Your front derailleur problem is easily by attaching the cable to the left side of the bolt first so it wraps over and then down on the right side. 180 degrees (9oclock to 3 oclock) of the bolt will pinch the cable in place so it will be more secure. But most importantly, the cable is as far left on the lever action as possible. Physics to the rescue! I had a similar problem on a friend's bike. Shifting force was soooo much easier.
@jasperverkuijl
@jasperverkuijl 4 года назад
Yeah i guess you’re right. It will increase the effective lever. That might work. However that’s not they way the cable is supposed to go. There is a little slot the cable needs to go in and that’s on the other side of the bolt (a bit unlogical maybe) I wanted to have a solution that would be using the parts as they were meant. Hence I think the 6800 derr doesn’t match this frame very well. (Although there is a walkaround like you just mentioned)

i'm a beginner with a sensa race entry bike. started with 140kg in april, going towards 120kg now. i told myself at 100KG i'll buy a badass canyon aerod with electronic shifting. since you mentioned the aggressive position with your handlebar, i wonder if this is the right bike for me since, even at 100kg, i'll have a floppy belly hanging around (most of it due to hanging skin). sadly we can't demo those canyon bikes. i find the pricing for 6/7k pretty nice, specialized here in NL would be 10K, so would be all the other ones comparing to the high end canyon ones. glad i still have 25kg to go till that decision!

Freaking awesome what you are doing. Can I be honest? The geometry is low, so your belly will be in the way of your legs pushing them out, misalinging your knees and ankles. Get a more relaxed bike. The Aeroad is made for racers. Don’t be offended plz

Go for it! Maybe Canyon can build for you a mixed combination of the Aeroad and Endurace. The Endurace wheels ERC 1400 SPLINE have a higher system weight clearance, 120kg vs. 100kg. I don't know how relaxed these companys are in case of warrenty.

Great Review! -- It seems any new bike with carbon rims would benefit from disc brakes. I switched from aluminum to carbon rims and considerably more brake force is required. They simply don't brake as well as aluminum rims and this can be scary on steep decents. My next bike will have disc barkes if only for that reason. As for the Canyon -- I think you got great support from the manufacturer. I would not hesitate to purchase from them based on your experience.

A review after 35,000 Km, you can't be more comprehensive than that. If I followed all what you said, there is nothing left of the original bicycle you received from the Canyon factory. It’s very useful to the guys who want to buy canyon bike or frame. The warranty of canyon is quiet good to me. In the video, you went to a lot of competition and travel and present the bike is strong and easy assembly. I think the service quality of canyon service house is not so well but I am in Taiwan so I do not need the service in the service house may be. After all thank you for this sharing and it’s very useful.

I've got this same bike with Ultegra Di2 and the carbon cockpit. Absolutely love it, no matter the terrain. When I ordered I could actually swap the cockpit for a longer one, just delayed delivery for a week or so. The only bad thing about it were the rubbish Reynolds wheels...which I sold and replaced. Whenever I can afford a new bike again, the new Aeroad will be high up the wishlist ;)

@@jasperverkuijl oh, they're decent wheels but it's virtually impossible to change a flat at the side of the road. If you're lucky you might get the bead of the tire onto the rim but it is impossible to seat the tire with a mini-pump or similar. So they're just not useful for real-life riding. When I was looking into what I was doing wrong I found lots of people with the same complaint, so concluded it wasn't me but the wheels and sold them. I had another set of deep section carbon wheels anyway. What slightly annoyed me was that both Canyon and Reynolds insisted that this was perfectly normal and one just needed patience when mounting tires...on any other wheel I can change a tire probably a couple of minutes or so, so I don't know why I should accept the Reynolds wheels as normal....hopefully with better tubeless tire and rim standards this will be less of a problem on wheels going forward...

Groet!

Me, living in Denmark and at the start of my bicycling journey... the canyon aeroad looks really appealing, both in terms of it's initial setup and overall look :D I started on an old steel racer (full campagnolo/STI 16 gear) but quickly purchased a Cannondale six13 slice si2 (TT) which is now my Training bike, so i have the choice of converting that to 'normal' race bike or get a second bike (used)... CF 6.0 seems like what would suit me

Some things never chance: when Campagnolo wears in, Shimano wears out. And major parts (frame etc.) which already fail after 1,5 year of use are nothing to look forward to either. Thanks for this review, no Canyon for me. I ride a titanium Van Nicholas for 4 years now (31.000 KM) without a single problem. Still ride an aluminium Vitus with a total of 170.000 km on the clock, apart from the normal wear I didn't have any problems with the bike. Seems like people want to pay gold for a carbon dream, which happens to be a nightmare a few moments later.

@@jasperverkuijl Ti is a perfect alternative for carbon, it's light, stiff, longlasting and bullit proof. Downside is the price for a good Ti frame. I think the next reason for people to opt for carbon instead of Ti is the looks. For most people Ti just doesn't look spectacular as a slick carbon frame does. Might be a big misconception, the looks of a sublime Litespeed, Merlin, Lynsky or a lovely Passoni is stunning for the reel connoisseur.

Hi Jasper, loved the video report. I also have a canyon, ultimate cf slx and have done a couple of étapes, part of the marmotte (cut short by crash), several other climbs in the Dolomites, alps etc... I was interested in the brake problems you experienced because I have never had any problems with my exalith rims (in my case mavic r-sys slr wheels) on long descents. I was wondering if you were using exalith 2 specific brake pads or something else? Maybe that could explain the mushiness and wear problems?
@jasperverkuijl
@jasperverkuijl 4 года назад
Hi mate. Yes I was using the exalith brake pads. A difference of the Aeroad vs ultimate wheels is that the Aeroad has these carbon covers over the rims. I think those might decrease the cooling ability of the rims a lot? That might have them heat up more like what happened to me on mont ventoux. On normal conditions the wheels brake pretty descent so that was never really the issue
