In the early days of the Urban Gentry channel I took a look at the Seiko Flightmaster SNA411 and described it as one of the best chronograph beater watches under $200. Over 5 years have passed with this watch in my collection and my fondness for this watch has only grown.
Why is it such a compelling watch among the Gentry?
How did its design come to be?
How has my perception changed during this long love affair with the now legendary "Flighty"?
Is it still the best watch under $200?

I am a pilot and the flight master was my first flight watch that I used the E6-B when my electrical went out. I followed it with a Navi-timer, but you can count on quartz.

You have done it again ! The Flighty is pure class & being an English man I love marmite! & the soggy countryside. This watch is now on my shopping list for birthday or Christmas! Sounds like we've both had our Nighthawks for about 8-9 years now. The mineral crystal on mine is beat to hell but I still love that watch enough for it to get about half my wrist time. Hope yours is still serving you as well as mine is! Especially after I actually took the time to learn to use the slide rule bezel about 4 years ago 😅

What bothers me about the Seiko flightmasters (owning two) is that the crystal is always in between the slide rule. Makes precise lining it up difficult. Breitling and Sinn have a better solution here, Citizen has the slide rule completely on the outside. The action and resistance of the slide rule is perfect though. I‘m in love with slide rule watches and actually use it almost daily.

Noice! The distortion on the crystal really makes the watch work. Dial appears deeper, more layered, and the watch itself looks more like a precious object.

About the strap, ndc is not the only company that uses the marine militare straps. MN (Erika's original straps) also uses the same straps. She also has better color variety and customization. Also the MN straps are single pass so sit better on the wrist. Check them out. They are much better than the ndc straps in my opinion.

But the sinn 903 look's almost like an exact copy of the navitimer.. The flightmaster on the other hand has a lot more originality to it.

@@Star_Sn1per sinn bought the rights to produce the navitimer in 1979 when breitling went bankrupt. Sinn owns that design just as much as breitling does. It's also smaller, more water resistant and uses a sellita that basically any watchmaker can service

Thanks for the news. They can’t leave the low to mid range open for Citizen and other brands, but Grand Seiko will need to do two things... 1) Ditch the Seiko styling of triangular hands and other aspects that are clearly Japanese and traditional for them; 2) Rebrand to dump the name Seiko from any luxury item they sell. Watch lovers may appreciate Grand Seiko branding, but consider how many more Acuras/Lexus you would sell than Grand Hondas or Grand Toyotas. Anyone status conscious will treat them as a poor man’s version, and unfortunately status is what drives most of the high end watch market.

Once again a great video, under a gray sky, which looks so much like my Sarthoise campaign in FRANCE. Really a beautiful story with this watch, and the more I see Tristano's videos and the more I feel like it. Small ancillary question, but what is this black jacket? a SOFTSHELL PATRIOT? I love it. Terrific history! I wore my Flighty out this evening. It's a do anything watch. It goes with jeans and a rugby shirt. It goes with a suit. I wear mine on a Bond (black/olive/red) NATO. Seiko did not end production, they shifted production to China. New watches are available today.

I recently bought my first flighty. I'm having an issue with changing straps as the spring bars are way too thick. I can not find any place that sells curved spring bars, or spring bars thin enough to be able to have my natos slip on and off easily. Anyone have any recommendations on where to find them in western Canada? Btw TGV thanks for the amazing videos. You're videos reinvigorated my love of watches.

AFG, remove the spring bars, put your strap in place, and then put the spring bars back in. DO NOT try to run the strap thru with the spring bars in place.

According to the Moh's hardness scale, sapphire is not a whole lot harder than Hardlex; apparently, Hardlex is +7 while sapphire is +9. Hardlex is, however, a good bit more impact resistant than sapphire, which, like diamonds, is quite brittle. I've never felt the need to replace the crystals on my Seikos unless I'm modding them. Oh, and, BTW, this is comparing the better grade of Hardlex as found on Seiko's better dive watches (they have 2 types of Hardlex), not the Hardlex typically used on less expensive watches such as the Seiko 5 line. Where the Flightmaster's crystal falls in this level of quality I haven't a clue.

WOW you really did a super job on this video. The history of the FlightMasters is priceless. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this show. BTW, I have the SNA411 and an earlier 7T34 Flighty with the register date and alarm. They are both running well and I think my 7T34 is just about 30 years old. Ordered this this morning as well as a Seiko SNZH57J1! Relatively new to the world of watch nerdery but I reckon I've started well! Can anyone suggest the best place online to find straps for the oddly sized 21mm sna411? I've seen that 20mm natos seem to fit without much additional space but wondering do 20mm leather not fit or tend to rattle? Thanks to any advice givers in advance!

I've had both and gun to head I'd pick the Flightmaster even though I primarily like dive watches. I think the Flightmaster has some diving DNA with WR, the markers, and almost Tuna-like case.

I bought it last year because of you and I must admit, it's one of my favorite watches. There's something about it... A lot of people ask about it, it's an attention grabber. I have been looking for the SNA413 at a decent price since and I haven't found one. Also, another suggestion, I think thethe Citizen Nighthawk BJ7000-52E is also great to have.

How nice, I own a 7A28 (the first analogue display quartz chronograph) and my watchmaker made a total restoration. It was worth it even it is "only" a quartz. I can understand you feelings for your flighty. 😊

I LOVE THE FLIGHTY SO MUCH!!! I have 3 other variants of the beloved SNA411. Gold Tone SNA414 Blue Panda SNA413 And the Black PVD Stealth Flighty SNA721 I'm still looking for the all white variant. Someone put up an all white for sale in the group but I was too slow to scoop it up. =(

By the way, I have an older 7T32 powered Seiko chronograph (4 pushers) which no longer works. The chronograph is still working, but the timekeeping or the alarm function are not working. Does anybody know if the movement can be fixed or it must be replaced? And if so, where can I find one? Somebody told me the 7T32 movement was also used for the Pulsar watches, but under another name ...

Great video. Excellent history of this watch. I have the gold one pictured at 7:48 in the video. Bought it in the 90's when it first came out. Have had zero problems with it. Didn't know much about it other than I liked the look and the functions and I could afford it. That's pretty much how i bought all of my watches back in the 80's and 90's. And you're so right about the battery life. 3 year batteries last about 6 years in this watch. The jewelry store that changed the battery for me recently said they did the last one six years ago. As far as the alarm goes, my ears don't hear it as well they used to so, i now just use the alarm function as a second time zone.

Hi TGV, late in 2017, Seiko released a quartz perpetual calendar model. I wonder if you've come across this model (SPC129P1) and if so, what do you think about it? I think its fascinating that Seiko has been able to produce a grand complication in a £150 watch, and along with that, I think it's super smart. Cheers!

Mine hasn't gotten much wrist wear lately due to my Bulova Lunar pilot, but it is hands down one of the best chrono I've worn.

Great video, as usual! Anyway, I can't imagine TGV shooting animals in the woods, but rather giving them a horology lecture, St. Francis teaching watches to the birds, something like in a Dino Buzzati novel 😀

Flighty is great no doubt, it was a toss up but I went for the Citizen Nighthawk instead. The quality of the bracelet swung it and I love it. Might still get a Flighty though!

I watched your previous videos on this watch, and loved it so much I ordered one on impulse. I put it on a navy blue nato strap and it looks amazing! Now after this video I’m loving this watch even more! If my wallet could talk it would yell at me for watching your videos!

I also would like to add that I had trouble fitting a nato strap onto this piece, but I bought a pair of curved spring bars that helped the same strap slide in perfectly.

I own a SSC008 solar powered flightmaster. It was the watch that go me into this hobby. To this day my Flighty was the only watch I bought from a dealer and that I've paid retail price for. It's been running for 4 years now without skipping a single beat. I just love it. I don't wear it much but I just cant sell it. It was my first watch and I still pick it up and test the chronograph before I choose the watch to wear that day. I love the busy dial, the size. It an amazing piece.

So, I started my collection some months ago. Nothing special yet, but I strongly like mechanical watches and cannot stand quartz even though I understand that they can really be great watches. Then I saw your videos about this watch and I had to buy it. And now, out of 6 mechanical watches and 1 quartz, I always wear the quartz, the "flighty" as you would call it. I really really enjoy it, but I still have this feeling, which ruines my happiness, of it not being a mechanical watch. I saw the sbds003 (if I remember correctly, I mean the automatic flightmaster) and I couldn't breath for sometimes, I just wanted it... Needless to say it's impossible to find one. So now I want to ask you, please address me to some mechanical watches with the same characteristics (I really love the size, the bezel, the depth, the glass). Apart from the incredible Navitimer I mean, is there anything more affordable and which can give the same enjoyment? Ciao TGV, grazie per i tuoi video belli ed eleganti!

Since this Flightmaster model is now $380-$425 and discontinued, does anybody have good alternatives to this watch? I'm aware of Casio Edifice EF527D-1AV (in black, red, green, blue) which is ~$100 and still in production. And the Citizen Nighthawk (but that is >$400) so not really in the same tier. I'm confused why the Seiko Pilot 7T92-0CF0 (blue) doesn't get any attention. I wish Seiko would just release another model of this watch already but knowing Seiko, it will now cost >$1000 and thus, defeat the whole purpose of this category.
