Believe it or not I paid 1300 ish for the same savage as he has. They are not that bad all in all. Now ammo on the other hand a cheap box of shit lapua ammo is like $90. Hunting ammo is usually way over 100
🤔🤔🤔 umm....these are my rifles I literally shoot every week and buy a lot of ammo for. The prices are exact. You cannot get match grade 338lm hunting ammo for less than $5 a shot.
The 338 Lapua has a 1600 meter range and it is not only great for hunting but also as a military sniper rifle. The British Army uses the 338 Lapua as its sniper round in an Accuracy International platform. The Lapua round are less expensive than the 50 BMG and it is more practical overall.
I reload 338 Lapua for 60 cents each. Yep, 60 cents. That is with 200g Speers over H414. Reloading costs for the Berger and Sierra 300's are $1.15. The 285 Hornady ELDM's are also $1.15 over H1000/Retumbo. Reloading equipment pays for itself QUICK
@@corymallo581 Yes that cost does not include brass. I consider brass a one time cost for the 338 LM and lump it in with the gun. 100 rounds reloaded 10 times is 1,000 and I don't think I'll ever shoot that much. Even if brass cost you $2.50 a piece and you only get 8 reloads out of it you're only adding about 31 cents.
@@corymallo581 That's awesome! I wish I had the opportunity to shoot that much. The ELR matches in my area are expensive and difficult to get into but are typically less than 40 rounds at a match.
@@corymallo581 He is very close on the reloading cost. I load 300 grain Nosler Custom Competition bullets, Hogden H-1000 powder, CCI primers, and Lapua brass. If I anneal the brass I should get at least 12 cycles out of it and I end up at about $1.50 per round at pre-shortage cost. That load shoots about 0.7 MOA from my rifle.
I had one of these in the older frame, weighed 20 lbs with scope. Took it, an AR-10 and several other rifles out fishing with me. The wind came up and you can guess the rest. The lesson here is don’t fish in California.
You are right about not having much recoil. I have a Savage 112 target in 338 Lapua. It feels like shooting a 22. My 300 RUM kicks like a mule. Great video keep up the great work
Barrett M99 .50BMG Remington 700 MLR 338 Lapua Love both of my rifles, I don’t do much of any hunting but they are fun to blast targets with here in Canada. Great video also!
Why i bought the 50. Better to have one and not need it... A 50 in one hand and a Bible in the other. No one mentions you can't get the cool rounds in 338. Api, raufoss, incendiary, spotter tracer etc. I'm looking at the Savage in 338 right now.
Having owned both (EDM Windrunner M96 and TRG-42) no contest, .338 Lapua for anything but anti-material. You can acquire good .338 Lapua for $3 around, cheap stuff for less. It's just more pleasant to transport, shoot, carry ammo for, etc. Reloading a .338 is MUCH easier and way more cost effective.
Hey brother I’d have to buy the Lapua magnum I couldn’t afford the 50 BMG. I’m happy with my 300 Winchester magnum that’s big enough to take whatever grows with the right bullet. The ones you have there are very very nice now
I want them both and I’ll be buying the single shot 50 BMG next year, well I’ll actually be putting my down payment on it in August because it takes a year and and half to build. The 338 I will make a Christmas present to myself I’m in the process of building a 50 Beowulf right now so yeah I’m into the big calibers.
.300 win mag for this guy all day. I wish I could afford one of the bigger ones as a fun gun. Cool idea for a video... maybe take them both out to a mile ? On a milk jug ?
My 338 is a Savage 110 Precision and I have a TruGlo Eminus 24 (6-24X50) and I only shoot the Hornadt Precision Hunter 270 grain ELDX Ammo and I have hit at 2000 yards with ease, as well as just on a deer hunt with no issues at all.
Have both myself. I find myself shooting the 50 more often. Only because of the fun factor. Has nothing to do with practically. But there are better options above the RN-50 that don’t cost as much as the model 99. Theres the Serbu BFG-50. Bolt action and a good 1500-2000 cheaper than the Barrett model 99. Or the Noreen ULR, about the same price as the BFG-50. If I’m going to creep up toward the 5k mark on a Barrett 99, I’d probably just save a bit more and go all the way into the auto-loading market (think BFG-50a. At the end of the day, shoot whatever works for you and brings a smile to your face
Great video! Seller & Bellot and PPU are some familiar names that make affordable factory ammo for 338 Lapua ($2 to $3 per round). 338 Lapua HSM & Hornady can be purchased for under $3.50 per round.
I’m supposed to go with my nephew one day long range shooting. 1,000 yard plus I’m taking my 300 Winchester magnum it will reach out there to a 1,000 yards to no problem
I just picked up a Barrett 98 Bravo 27" barrel .338 Lapua, and a Trijicon Tenmile 5-50x56 scope. Heading to the range next weekend. Not at all worried about the cost of the ammo, it's one of those things that if you have to ask how much it cost, then you can't afford it anyway.
There are still Bushmaster BA-50's around for under $5k. They are bolt action, but they come with 2 10 round mags. No complaints on my end. Not idea if Remington will keep making them or not, so my advice is if you can find one and it's what you want, get it while you can.
I would love to see you try out HSM’s hollowpoint and Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos ammo for the 50 BMG. I have both that I plan to use for hunting this year. Just to try something different than hornady’s amax or ball ammo. I would love to see a video with either or both to get your opinion.
I had both but lost them in a boating accident last winter in West Virginia. My 50bmg was a nice custom single shot upper that used a mil-spec ar-15 lower and didn't require a FFL.
I went through this exact debate some years ago. Ended up with that same savage in 338. Ppu338 at the time was 2.50 a shot and 50 bmg was 5$. Then they swapped for the pandemic. I bought me a case of 50 bmg for 2.25 a round when I seen it go for that. Just to have on the shelf for when I find a deal on a 50 bmg... and happen to have the money to splurge on it. I’ve got faith.
i just returned from a hog hunt with my Noreen ULR 50BMG rifle. shooting Hornady 750 grain A-Max,dropped 7 hogs lined up at a trail of corn. the rifle weighs 35lbs scoped. after my wife shot it a few times she informed me she wants one of her own. and my scope rings are Sightmark heavy duty, $45,and they are great. this rifle has less recoil than a 12 gauge 3.5" magnum and costs $2200. will evidently be buying another for the wife.
I'd like to own a 50BMG but my wallet says no, lol. For hunting anything from deer to moose or grizzly, a 45-70 or a 300WM can get the job done. Can be really cheap and get it done with a 12 gauge shotgun. It'll all come down to where the hunt is and the range. If it's for protection, it's hard to beat a lever action 45-70 or a 12 gauge shotgun. Since my wallet is thin, I'm stuck with short range of a shotgun but in no way do I feel under gunned. Good video WTW, thanks for the info and the advice!
338 Lapua is the logical choice. It is a sniper and hunting cartridge with mile range. Puts a 250gr bullets 3000 fps off the muzzle. It is a tactical rifle proven in combat. It is the sniper caliber of the British Army. The cost for a quality 338 Lapua rifle from Savage is in the low $1000.00 range instead of the 5k to 10k dollar range for a quality 50 BMG.
Another thing to think about with the 50bmg is it's considered a destructive device by the ATF ( 50 actually uses a 51 caliber projectile ) which means more fees and tighter regulations some states ban them Make sure you ask your local guns shop about what you can and can't have
300 win mag is the largest I have . The Browning Mk3 300 win mag is incredibly light recoiling and super accurate, running a leupold VARI-X 3 it is my go to hunting rifle. My Winchester Model 70 Laredo LRH with the Nightforce NXS 5.5-22X50 will reach on out there with .25 moa all day long running the 215 Berger Hybrids. I'd love to have one of the Nemo or Noreen semi auto 300 win mags but I just can't pull the trigger on one 😉.
I have a Blazer R93 LRS2 in 338 LM with a Nightforce NXS 5.5 22 mil Dot reticle I love the rifle and it is a 1/4 MOA rifle. I hand load my ammo Lapua brass with 250gr lapua sceanar With Vita Vouri powder. I have shot 50 BMG also but I prefer the 338LM the 50 is fun for a few shots but the concession is a bit much and nobody will enjoy being next to you with the muzzle brake.
Don't own either one of them but I love watching you guys fire them! Just for laughs! I would love to see you guys pack some Tannerite in a dryer down range. Over Yonder by big Yeller.
After carrying both in Iraq and Afghanistan, even tho the 50 causes more damage, due to the weight of the rifle and Ammo, I bought and own a 338 Lapua. To me it’s more realistic and easier to deal with. Both can shoot accurately @ 1.5 miles.
I remember that video of your Wife shooting the 50 Bmg. I think she was a little surprised by the recoil of the 50. It definitely wasnt to bad for someone her size.
11 lbs not bad my marauder is 11-12 lbs and with the marauders gear air bottle in my backpack 20+lbs together i squirrel all day in the woods like that :P
Who Tee Who.... Thanks for this awesome comparison video. Like you had stated, the decision on which one to get should be based on the intended purpose. The 50 BMG is very expensive, and is the way to go if you are looking at competing in the King of 2 Mile or any other ELR competition. So unless you plan in ELR, then I would suggest you go with the 338 Lapua. Overall cost of just the rifle will be lower depending if you are going to be happy with the basic stock for it, or go with a chassis rig. Next item to consider is ammo cost. Either caliber you are talking big bucks. So consider reloading. Upfront cost to obtain all your reloading equipment is another consideration. I have being looking into all the options, and associated cost and am very happy with my SAVAGE Axis 308.
"Affordable" is relative to the person. Also as for hunting rifle ammo, Affordability is not that much of an issue. Get it sighted in, get comfortable with it and then a box or 2 of ammo per year is not a big deal.
who wanna buy a gun you should know the range you will be shooting the average range of your target aka the game big or small also and 1000 yrds is just for fun in the woods no on should be able or hunt a deer ... or anything like this for that range so stay with a .308 or something close and you will be fine don't spend your money guys for nothing because 5 dollars for a bullit for the size the of the .338 that is stealing from the factory they are thieves they should sell the bullets for how much it cost to produce and put a little bit more of profit on it and i'm sure the .338 don't cost as the half of the .50bmg so yeah stay with smaller cal.
That isng how business works, they may not cost a great deal more in materials than something like a .308 but the amount sold is far far less, all the tooling and set up has to be paid for orbit is not financially viable to produce it. It's like with medication ,the first pill costs tens of millions to produce and all the others cost a penny, that first pill still needs to be paid for.
I actually on the M 99 and a savage be a stealth. You were correct, 50 BMG is actually cheaper than the .338 Lappula. My latest beats them both, a 416 Rigby. Eight dollars/$12 per round. Crazy. Thanks for the great videos.
Just picked up a Savage 110 Elite Precision in .338 LM. I hand load for about $1.45 per round. Loading Hornady ELD X 270 gr with 92.0grns H1000. I'm getting over 2900fps and great accuracy at 1000 yards. I did buy one box of Hornady 285gr ELD Match they were $5.20 per round. First and last factory ammo I buy.
I got a Savage 338LM LRH I use sierra HPBT 300gr.cost per round is about $2.40 a round.Don't know where you are buying your ammo.I got a bunch of brass that I'm gonna send back and they will reload it for about $1.50 a round. Defiantly a great gun to hunt with I took a deer this past Nov. drop it in its tracks.
So I have the money but the 338 I want is out of stock (of course) I would like to see a video on what is required as far as do you need scope rings hiw beefy does the bipod need to be ect.
About 13 years ago a guy I use to work with bought a 50bmg rifle. I could of sworn he was paying $10 a round for 50bmg ammo back then. It’s nice to see the price for the ammunition has come down.
