Chris wrote this song in high school, it is about him being sexually abused as a child. In an interview I heard him say that since then he has taken legal action. Truly beautiful and disturbing. Chris is one of a kind.
this whole album got really bad reviews because they said his lyrics were horrible. shout out to all music critics: simplicity is not bad. not everything has to be symbolism. compare this to literally any pop or hip-hop song and this is lyrical genius. it may not be the most complicated or wordy song, but it is beautiful, emotional, and every other good adjective in the dictionary.
i have been listening to Chris Garneau since this album was first released. I never get tired of any of these songs and they have provided profound meaning for me, and a basis to the which i could hone my craft (writing) whilst listening to sad Chris Garneau songs. 4 years ago, my grandmother passed away in the morning, and an hour later i got the call that i was hired for a place that i applied for. At night, with mixed emotions and a heavy head i fell into the kind of disruptive half-sleep where you just stare at the ceiling and look towards the clock often enough to check that the hours are still passing. I listened to sad news, and the line where he sings "I've got a job i'm not proud" was when i started to cry. It sunk in for me. I typed this out to give one example of the many times his songs and others have helped me through troubling times. Chris Garneau is an amazing artist, probably my favorite, and this song live is better than the studio version! Anyway, rambling done, get back to listening!
I just found out about this guy 2 days ago from his Between the Bars cover (im a huge Elliott Smith fan) and im already in love with this guy. He draws you in in an instance with his unique and haunting voice...and his songwriting is out of this world.
beautiful...the ice-pick to smash the frozen sea inside us, emotion runs out, human after all....empathy, sorrow, joy, tears. life is simple after all.........
For the people freaking out, Chris Garneau is alive and well. He's on tour in Europe right now. I think NBH was either speaking from her experience or interpreting lyrics. Anyway, awesome song.
i do agree and understand your point. After earing the original version I prefer the way he speaks instead of this accoustic version. thanks for notice us this
Yeahhh I know what you mean, like he places the same amount of emphasis on "I know" but he pauses before he says :"now" The recorded song was more fluid. And that's my favorite part XD
seriously guys. stop fighting? so one doesnt like it and one does. do you have to litter the page with your pmsing? i love this song, and i didnt really come to listen and read some crap about whether its good or not. keep your opinions. neither of you are gonna change your opinion on the song so just drop it and stop trying. please. be mature.
i've always seen it as an ode to an affair. The singer is sleeping with a married man who has a child. Whenever they meet, the child is there to remind them. He mentions that "If she knew than she'd kill you" which i think is referencing the wife. Also the idea that he'll never tell on his lover.
The whiskeys waiting on the firetop, The babys going to drink too. The ladys got no clothes shes at the shop. But if shed knew then shed kill you. The bugs are out cause they come out at night, Usually they just bite our hands. Cause normally we have clothes on without a fight, But now fightings a part of babys romance."
to me it's about a neglected love & 2 people who can only find love in a particular way through distractions like drinking & fighting -like their enitre relationship is a mistake their drinking & disagreements are terrible but what comes out of them is beautiful a beautiful mistake (like an unexpected baby) 1 of them already knows all this the other one has just discovered it & continues to go along with the routine for the sake of maintaining their beautiful & horriendous relationship.
ok. one guy is...dead... another guy was from a relationship, ended cause of distances. i miss both...this song is like... "i would like to see a little more propriety...cooperate with me, and answer me without a plea" (the ex-boyfriend).
@pinkduckproductions1 From what I've heard, this song is about sexual abuse. If you listen to the lyrics it kind of makes sense. Although I'm not sure.
