Coyote hunting has officially been taken to the next level by O'Neill Ops using precision rifles and the top thermal scopes from Trijicon EO. This video includes one-of-a-kind night hunting footage of 50 coyote dirt naps filmed directly through the eyepiece of the Trijicon IR Hunter MKIII 60mm, REAP-IR, and the IR Patrol M250 XR.
The guys of O'Neill Ops have pioneered the art of predator hunting suppressed and they are building on that experience by pushing the envelope at night. As 4th generation ranchers and farmers, hunting coyotes is not just a hobby or a pastime for them. They have a duty to protect the cattle that they raise for food.

**Why hunt coyotes?**
Coyotes are presently the most abundant livestock predators in western North America, causing the majority of sheep, goat, and cattle losses. For example, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of the 224,000 sheep deaths attributed to predation in 2004.The total number of sheep deaths in 2004 comprised 2.22% of the total sheep and lamb population in the United States, which, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA report, totaled 4.66 million and 7.80 million heads respectively as of July 1, 2005.
Because coyote populations are typically many times greater and more widely distributed than those of wolves, coyotes cause more overall predation losses. The United States government agents routinely shoot, poison, trap, and kill about 90,000 coyotes each year to protect livestock.
Coyotes typically bite the throat just behind the jaw and below the ear when attacking adult sheep or goats, with death commonly resulting from suffocation. Blood loss is usually a secondary cause of death. Calves and heavily fleeced sheep are killed by attacking the flanks or hindquarters, causing shock and blood loss. When attacking smaller prey, such as young lambs, the kill is made by biting the skull and spinal regions, causing massive tissue and bone damage. Small or young prey may be completely carried off, leaving only blood as evidence of a kill.
In the absence of the harassment of coyotes practiced by rural people, urban coyotes are losing their fear of humans, which is further worsened by people intentionally or unintentionally feeding coyotes. In such situations, some coyotes have begun to act aggressively toward humans, chasing joggers and bicyclists, confronting people walking their dogs, and stalking small children. Non-rabid coyotes in these areas sometimes target small children, mostly under the age of 10, though some adults have been bitten.

I love this video. A few years ago we lost 14 goats in one night. Our heard is only 40. They only ate 2. Was like they were teaching pups how to hunt or just killing for killing. Have hated coyotes ever since. I’ve shot a few but a proper night vision rig would be amazing, hopefully some day we can budget for one. Great video!

Joseph Pedulla not a stupid idea however the rabbits are a pest on most farms as they dig burrows that can break a cow or larger animals leg of it gets stuck as well as they eat the same food as the livestock. So they are competing with (on the farm where I am at least) the cows and goats. So we keep the rabbit numbers down as best we can (I don’t waste any. I collect all of the ones I shot and clean them and eat them). This is my second RU-vid where I’m beginning to show some of my air rifle pesting and such. The first account above is my primary RU-vid but in case anyone had questions about air rifle pesting if coyotes or other pests can ask here. I have just a few videos up as just working out a way to record my pest control hunts. I do however have some early clips at dairy barns as well as a how to clean birds for beginners by beginners videos. 😀👍🏻

@hansbrackhaus8017
@hansbrackhaus8017 4 года назад
Indeed, it's commendable to not rush a shot. Bullets are quite small, even the big ones (unless we go ludicrous, of course) and there's gravity, wind, etc, and the fact that the exit of the gun is basically on a lever, as in, it's quite far away from the trigger, so even a little bit of shake there can translate to quite a veer. You can have surgeon hands and complete breath control and things can still get buffeted by a gust, the animal can still change posture, etc, so yeah, it requires a lot of skill and is certainly a lot more difficult than a videogame. The gear also helps with landing shots, and it's why I fully support efforts in making hunting equipment better and better. Every iteration that improves accuracy and killing power is a step toward a swift end to the animal, reducing suffering. The thrill of the shot and the hunt remains. So it's a win win situation.

When I was a kid the ranch we hunted on in Montana was run by a chain-swearing old friend of my dad. He ran a few thousand head of cattle at any given time and one of the only rules we were given was that we were to shoot any and all coyotes on sight, regardless of what else we doing. The guy practically lived with his herd during calving season; all he did was shoot coyotes with his 30-06 for days on end. It's been 45 years, but I think he would have been tickled pink to have such night vision gear.

Once again, a big thumbs up. The intro was compelling. Reminds one of what lies at risk. And great gear! I was at a gun show in Ennis Mt. and a Trijicon rep was there. He demonstrated a multi-function IR scope that would not only show the target with amazing clarity, but also the footprints as it moved. Sadly it was not for sale, except to the armed forces, but still a nice showcase item for Trijicon. IMNSHO, Farmers, ranchers and dedicated varmint control ops, should receive a fair subsidy to offset the cost of effective optics to reduce the threats that make our edibles more expensive through depredation loss.

This is some of the best dog footage I've ever seen. Kudos! Some people don't realize how smart and clever coyotes are. They are becoming habituated to humans in cities. Currently, we hear of 1-2 children per year carried off, this will soon double every year as they become more city wise. This is an animal that must be persecuted relentlessly in country and city, or they will cause untold grief.

O'Neill Ops Here is great reference to keep handy. Tests have been done to confirm if coyotes affect whitetail deer populations. A study was organized and researched in Northern Alabama by Dr. Karl Miller[1] of the University of Georgia and Cory Van-Gilder[2], graduate of the University of Georgia, along with Dr. Grant Woods[3], graduate of Missouri State University, University of Georgia, and Clemson University. The study was performed on 2,000 acres where 22 coyotes and 10 bobcats were removed during fawning season. Resulting in a doubled fawn population. Later, Miller went on to conduct a second study in Southwest Georgia on 2 sections of land. One section of 11,000 acres, 23 coyotes and 3 bobcats were trapped and on another 7,000 acres no trapping was done. The results were staggering. In the trapped area 2 out of every 3 does had fawns opposed to the un-trapped area where only 1 out of 28 does had fawns. gameandgarden.com/sustainability/land/do-coyotes-affect-deer-populations/

Nice stats. Coyotes are an invasive species here on the East Coast. They thrive in the suburbs where pets are plentiful and owners a bit naive. In the rural areas, the coyotes are very hard on deer. Coyote hunting is January 1st through December 31st in many places, with no bag limit.

It is amazing how many are talking about the length of time he waits to pull the trigger. I have to wonder how many have been behind a scope at night. Also we don't know the range he is shooting with each shot. Plus he is in a field with livestock, and houses in the area. That bullet is not going to just stop after hitting the target. Being sure your on target and making sure it's safe behind is a big part of it. Keep doing what your doing, the way your doing. Safe and humane shots are more important than just pulling the trigger quickly.
@stoopingfalcon891
@stoopingfalcon891 4 года назад
As far as range is concerned, obviously the shooter will wait for as short a range as he can get, but I believe that the average range is anywhere from about 40 to 100 yards. Not an easy target even at short ranges for such a small animal, and that's the main reason for the wait for each shot, to ensure as quick and as clean a kill as they can get. Using a scope at night is not as easy as the videos make it appear, a simple shift in temperature can throw the image out enough to miss the shot, and that can be pretty frustrating. Just a few thoughts on your comment :)

A breeding pair of coyotes will stake out and defend a territory. If unmolested, a breeding pair will have pups and form a pack of up to 10 individuals. Each pack has a dominant breeding pair. Other adults are behaviorally “sterile” and do not breed. This has implications for coyote control, because in areas with heavy coyote mortality, these typically “sterile” females are released and can breed. In addition to pack members, there are always random individuals known as floaters, which usually do not maintain a territory but are available to breed if the dominant breeders are killed. These floaters form a reservoir of replacement breeders should a breeding coyote be killed. In addition to these behavioral controls on breeding, in unexploited coyote populations that are near the saturation point in terms of food availability, many pups die of starvation and never reach maturity. In exploited populations, a greater number of pups will survive into adulthood, often negating any losses from Wildlife Services’ control efforts. A further limit on coyote livestock predation is due to learned behavior. Coyotes, like most predators, are reluctant to sample “new” food. If they are not preying upon livestock, they are unlikely to begin. However, in exploited populations, young orphaned coyotes must fend for themselves and in desperation will prey upon livestock and become livestock killers. To be successful at reducing coyote populations, a minimum of 70 percent of the population must be killed on a sustained basis. That is almost never achieved, and a vacant territory is quickly filled by floating individuals, or by a nearby pack. Furthermore, due to extreme competition for food and territories, there are compensatory mechanisms that quickly repopulate any vacant space. First, more females breed. Second, due to reduced competition for food, a greater percentage of pups survive and mature into adults. Finally, in exploited populations, female coyotes breed at a younger age. All those mechanisms ensure that coyote numbers seldom decline for any significant period. Livestock grazing can also lead to more coyote predation by reducing cover for the preferred prey of mice and voles, which results in lower small-mammal populations. Exploited coyote populations also have fewer adults in a pack to feed pups, thus are more likely to attack the easier prey available-which often is domestic animals. In the end, the only alternative that is effective is nonlethal measures such as guard animals, corralling livestock at night and herding. Indeed, in some California counties, tax dollars that previously went to Wildlife Services were used for nonlethal methods, resulting in lower predation losses and lower costs. It’s time to put the Wildlife Services killing machine out of business, and to put more responsibility upon ranchers to manage their animals in a way that reduces predator opportunity.

@markmoore4088
@markmoore4088 7 лет назад
I think it depends a lot on the prey availability for the coyotes, or any predator, really. They eat whatever they can to survive. If rodents are scarce, coyotes are much more likely to kill livestock and a hungry fox or hawk is much more likely to grab a chicken. Coyotes can, and do at times cause significant destruction to livestock, especially sheep. I grew up on a large cattle and sheep ranch so I saw the predation first hand. Oddly enough, ravens seemed to do more damage than the coyotes, by killing newborn lambs. Yes, they are quite capable of killing lambs with that dagger-like beak.
@elcajondavid1
@elcajondavid1 7 лет назад
mark moore. Ah don't get me wrong, but most people I know that have sheep, always had sheep dogs to watch over them. I knew one guy he had two of the ugliest dogs on the face of the planet, don't even know what they were called, but if coyotes even got close to his lamas the dogs would hunt them down and kill them. Not a very pretty thing to see.
@okeydokey2337
@okeydokey2337 7 лет назад
David Rook A couple sheep dogs are no match for a pack of coyotes. Educate yourself my friend. Coyotes in my area are the single greatest threat to our livestock by far. Wild boar hogs also cause a lot of havoc but not like these packs of yotes. If you ran or owned live stock you would understand how much trouble these bastards cause. They serve almost no purpose at all. That's why states haven't regulated eliminating as many as possible on site.
@elcajondavid1
@elcajondavid1 7 лет назад
okey dokey. Sorry, but sheep dogs have been protecting livestock for hundreds of years. I have even seen them in videos taking on wolves, which is not very slick, but the point is they have been trained to protect the livestock, and very few get killed or even hurt, because most coyotes want to eat, not go into a bloody battle, so they will tuck tail and runaway. I personally think you are mixing up wolves with coyotes? Oh by the way, states allowing hunting bit, that is because ranchers that lose a cow, goat, sheep, automatically blame coyotes for it, and because they are very influential in most of these states, they can put pressure on the state government to allow hunting, but the facts do not support it. Watched one rancher poison a dead cow, to kill off the coyotes that took out the cow. Some biologists come along, and find all these dead coyotes, that fed off the cow. They start cutting them open and examining the contents, none of them had any cow meat, except the meat they had just eaten from the poisoned carcass. Instead they all had mostly vermin in them, and one actually had 9 rats in it. Now for the interesting part, one biologist thought there might even be the possibility that the cow died from stepping in a hole that a critter had dug and then broken its leg and died, but that rancher insisted that it was the coyotes that killed his cow. Oh by the way try educating yourself before making yourself look like moron, especially the line about "They serve almost no purpose at all?" They help to keep vermin in check, like the one that was poisoned that had 9 rats in its stomach. Now go educate yourself on how fast rats can multiply.
