50 years ago, a little animation studio in Toronto, Ontario named after a Canadian comic book heroine was founded by Michael Hirsh, Patrick Loubert, and Clive A. Smith. With a cute polar bear as their mascot, little did these three know that their studio would become the Disney Animation of Canada, helping to illustrate the childhoods of many Canadians, Americans, and other folks around the world through numerous productions. As a Canadian myself, Nelvana's shows have always had a strong presence in my life, whether it'd be catching classics like "Little Bear" and "Franklin" on Treehouse TV as a kid, or admiring the likes of "Wayside", "6Teen", and "Braceface" since early adolescence. The polar bear was always there.
Naturally, I had to pay some tribute to this company as they turn half a century old. I was thinking of doing a clip montage at first, before settling on what is basically an abridged, lightly-produced version of the doodle videos I previously did for Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon Animation's respective anniversaries. 49 "official" Nelvana productions and an honorary one ("The Fairly OddParents", whose first few seasons Nelvana distributed in Canada and other non-U.S. regions) are represented here, with a heavier emphasis on the shows I personally have a nostalgic connection with. Although I feel a little bad for leaving out stuff like "Inspector Gadget", "Dumb Bunnies", "Eek! The Cat" and "George and Martha". Oh well.
Oh yeah! Speaking of "Wayside", the song you hear in the background is the extended, instrumental version of the show's awesome theme song.

I grew up with a lot of these shows like Franklin, Handy Manny, Max & Ruby, Little Bear, The Berenstain Bears, Miss Spider’s Sunny Patch Friends and The Backyardigans. Man I am really going back into memory lane in this decade.

I never realized just how many of my childhood favorite Nick Jr. shows were made by Nelvana until I saw this video. Little Bear, Max & Ruby, The Backyardigans, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, and Franklin were all my jams. As for non-Nick Jr. shows from the company that I enjoyed, I loved The Magic School Bus, Eek! the Cat (it's a shame that it hasn't gotten a Disney+ release yet), 6Teen, The Bernstein Bears (2003), and Wayside. I don't think Inspector Gadget counts, though, since Nelvana was only involved with its first season.

Eek is wanted for FX Now, not Disney+. Disney's Fox has been nothing but trouble.

For a lot of my childhood Nelvana keeps blessing me with a lot of great kids cartoons (even though I’m not Canadian myself) The Backyardagans(sorry if I spelled it wrong), Little Bear, Braceface, Wayside, and Franklin Happy late birthday to Nelvana! The best animation studio in Canada! (Even though I’m American😅)

Really nice to see Nelvana get some love and appreciation. I feel like they're heavily overlooked by animation fans which is a-shame since their works are really good. I fortunately had the privilege of watching a lot of their stuff on Qubo. Really great job on the doodles though!

Thanks. I totally agree that Nelvana (and Canadian animation in general) deserves a boost of appreciation within the cartoon community. Sure, their stuff isn't always the best, but when they strike gold with a series that's both very entertaining and memorable, they sure do shine. Also, regarding Qubo, I would sometimes nickname it "the Nelvana Channel", given how it was like a retirement home for a good chunk of the studio's programs (though you'd think it'd be the one place where "Ruby Gloom" would air in America, but it remains unaired there for some reason).

Oh. It’s great that Nelvana has been around for a very long time. It made God knows how many shows. It’s also gonna be one of the production companies of my new crossover movie about a group of cartoon characters who become animators in Farley City. But Damian Cooper wants to get rid of the fictional characters, so every has to do an Endgame-style battle and survive.

Great job drawing Beastly and all the other Characters. Nelvana was part of my early Childhood. Also Beastly is my favorite Care Bears Character. Nelvana's library of cartoons should be more well known.

Thanks! Both Beastly and Shreeky were among the most memorable parts of Nelvana's "Care Bears". Plus I agree that Nelvana's best shows deserve more recognition.

Too bad their work remained hugely obscure outside of their native Canada, all gotten to the point where one of them was lost media through time! Until it was found...and put on a streaming service in Canada only. Also, one of them, Quads, revolutionized the future of Canadian animation by using Flash as the sole purpose of animating and was the very first animated TV series to use Flash, beating Mucha Lucha by a year and a half!

It still hits hard even without the amazing vocals of Skye Sweetnam. That theme is one of a few TV themes that are stuck in my head forever. The other few are ones you don't expect from a 20 something like me: Hunter, LA Law, Johnny Test (Season 1 theme, not the later one), OK K.O!, The Weekenders, The Replacements cartoon, and even sports themes like Paramount Network's (it was TNN) old motorsports show: American Sports Cavalcade (1994-95 version only), and NASCAR on Fox (2008 Toby Lightman theme, NASCAR Love). So yeah, I got good taste.

Right at 0:41 with a sketch of Norm the Genie. I thought it'd be funny to draw him instead of any main character 'cause he was voiced by the Canadian-born comedian Norm Macdonald, despite the character ironically being envious of Canada for vague reasons. Then again, I forgot that Tara Strong (voice of Timmy) is Canadian as well, and has done numerous voices for Nelvana, so maybe Timmy might have been a better choice after all. Oh well.
