I've seen couple of videos on this machine, but this one sells it the best! Actually showcasing it with nice reverb makes a huge difference in understanding it's usability. Good job Bo!

Pro: Good for ambiance and effects. Con: Bad for making songs. For that second one, the most practical solution is probably to sample or multisample it into some other device, then make music with the other device. Record a single note, tune it, then play it within a narrow pitch range... or record and tune a few notes for a wider range. That's how I've used LMNC's kilodrone. A single loopable sample serves as the "oscillator" for an orchestral sound, which can be shaped with an envelope to make it work as an orchestra hit or a pad. It sounds nice and huge, but can only play one or two notes at a time because there's simply no room in the spectrum for any more. Can confirm that the effect is greatly diminished when using it in mono mode though. There's not much point using an instrument like this in mono... so it's really really weird that they made the Solar 50's filter and effects mono only.

Welcome back Bo! That it is an interesting concept, but seems odd that there isn't voice panning, stereo filters and stereo fx (as you said). I guess that's to do with the footprint and cost of the instrument perhaps? I guess you can always use some external filters as a work around. Anyway, happy new year and it looks like you're enjoying the new studio. :)

Blackhole, very nice! It's become my go to reverb as of last few months. As someone that does dark ambient music, using mostly Eurorack and 5U gear, I can see this being a much less cumbersome setup for live gigs, and touring. The Mono out put is ok by me, most of the smaller coffee shops, art galleries, and small venues are often mono (at best) anyways. But in the studio, I'm gonna use pedals, and other modules. At the end of the day, this isn't for everyone. Personally, I'm looking forward to getting mine, hopefully, it will be shipping soon!

You made a great point about using this as sample fodder. I have one teamed up with a V-Synth, and it is perfect to be able to throw these massive sounds into the Roland and then sculpt them in the digital environment with all the stability it offers.

With these many voices you could readily make a 5.1 channel surround mix if it had outputs for each set of 5 voices, if you were feeling really crazy/experimental

Movie scores and background music right here! A really unique, boutique synth and yes, for a smaller intended audience. Some incredible drones & sound scapes are possible. I’ve had one on pre-order since last year and I think it’s landing this month 😊

Im trying to figure out if the mono wet and stereo dry outs can be used simultaneously. Is this possible? Im thinking the wet signal could be another texture besides the bigger stereo sound.

This is an example of why it is totally okay to consider using DCOs over VCOs in a synth design. That would have helped a lot with this concept being viable to the average user

Cool machine.... just really don't get the design choice to have the FX and filter mono.... on an ambient drone machine in 2021.... that alone makes it a hard pass for me.

Nice review Bo. That synth sounds great but I really feel the manufacturer totally missed the boat as far as the mono filter and effects. The plug in effects seems gimmicky. I'd lose those little cards. The niche it's intended for should dig it though.

Doesn't H9 limit you to one effect algorithm at a time? Better to go Eventide Space + a eurorack filter per channel on the dry outs ;)

I was scrolling through the manual and noticed that the OSC (per voice) all have different ranges. (so all 5 are different) You cant just tune them one by one to the same pitch... Sry if I missed this in the video !

...also, I'm super weird I guess because I find tuning and retuning my synths quite enjoyable. Not sure about 50 though. My biggest worry, where this machine is concerned, is reports of how quickly it becomes detuned. If it's as quickly as Nick suggested in his video, not sure I'd have the patience for that. Guess I'll keep searching and get a bit more user data first. But I love it really.

Actually think this one is worth it if you have a use for what this does. Scoring films, creating soundscapes, making ambient or drone music, etc. Seen friends score films with way less.

Not my cup of tea, I’d be bored after 1 hour with this , one trick pony, much prefer Pulser 23 as it does Ambient and EDM This does infinite Fugue drones to fall asleep to😃🤪
