Jim, I just got this idea for you! You’re the first one who advocate mixed screening plants and it makes a lot of sense!! Would you make a video gathering pictures of mixed screening plants of your viewers from different parts of the country and discuss the specifics of them?! I am gathering ideas of what will be a nice blend of screening plants and the number of each and what kind will be compatible together, say in full sun, part sun and shade setting, grow zone, etc!! Knowing how it will look together before planting will help a lot in decision making and prevent costly and timely mistakes!!! Thanks a lot Jim and Steph!! 😅

Hello! I live in zone 8b in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. We obviously have the heat, but it does snow here sometimes and hard freezes every year. I have problem neighbors whose giant poodles are agressive and on my property chasing trying to bite me and my dogs. I want to totally block them out. I was thinking about a thuja, however I live next to woods and have deer cleaning me out. I want something tall along my driveway. My driveway is right on the property line with my redneck neighbors. They have tons of rusted junk in their yard. It would be so nice not to see it and keep their dogs out, as well. What do you recommend? I have been looking for ten years. On the other side, I planted Leylandii on the other side and a drought came last year and brown branches appeared on all of them. I dont know if it is blight or drought. Anyway, I do not want to plant them again. I would really appreciate your recommendation for driveway privacy screening. Thank you!

This is a much needed video! Personally I feel like this is one of the most important topics because privacy and a good backdrop are key to enjoying our outdoor spaces. Also picking the right screening plant is key to avoiding maintenance headaches. Just such an important video! Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!

We used Tea Olives and Schip Laurels for our screen and we used Green Giant Arborvitea, Carolina Sapphire and Yoshino Cryptomeria trees along our back area to screen out the railroad tracks. Everything is 4 years old and really starting to fill in nicely😊

@missdeeva2266, Hi, it does sounds like a great combinations of trees! May I ask you how do you place them, ie, alternating, same type, rotate or mix in, etc? For what you did, are you happy with it and would you arrange them any differently and in spacing? I’d love to see how your screen looks like! Wish you can send pictures to Jim and have him show the pictures in a video! Jim, I just got this idea for you! You’re the first one who advocate mixed screening plants and it makes a lot of sense!! Would you make a video showing pictures of mixed screening plants of your viewers and discuss the specifics of them?! I've gardened for many years and now actively landscaping my yard/garden, I've gained so much great information and have purchased some of the shrubs/trees you've featured after watching your videos. Love camellias, viburnums, lorapetalum, and so many more! Needed this screening shrub video. Thank you!

I've been going to Broadwells for over 29 years. I'm in my last home possibly. I live planting and unformatted year and 2022 we lost most of our knock roses to rosette disease... UGH so we've dug up about half or more than half and burned 🔥 them up in our fire pit. We've replaced sone with Tall lorepetulam and medium size and this year we will buy more shrubs variegated to replace all the duseased roses in the front 2 beds, once we dig up the root balls of those diseased dead roses. We won't buy knock outs ever again, sad to say, they were our most Beautiful plants in our yard for almost 12 years! Makes me cry most of them have perished to this disease. I lost 45 plus knock out roses in all colors but white. We don't have any white roses. Cryptomeria is a favorite large shrub like tree we have in the front and want some for the back now.

I’ve seen some situations where a 20+ foot tall screen would be necessary, there are some awful city backyards that butt up to apartment buildings or something… then you’re also giving those tenants something green to look at their windows.

When planting along a property line, how far, on center, should you plant from the line? Is it half of the mature width of the plant? Also, should you factor in a walkway between the line and plant?

I don’t think the tea Olive appreciates the winds. I planted it in a quite sunny spot in zone 9B. It dried out pretty quickly. My plan was to plant a hedge of those along the fence. I will try again. But I would plant it during the winter time in zone 9B-10 so it gets established through the winter perhaps. I absolutely love this plant. It does just fine in the shade for sure.

Foster's holly = super hardy! 'Sunny Foster' is the gold suffused version. I have a related 'Round-Leaf' Fosters in my yard, which is basically a spineless form of regular Fosters (and extremely rare - I don't think it's even out in commerce). 'Round-leaf Fosters' has an occasional tip spine, but most tips are rounded. If you can find Ilex integra 'Ogon', my goodness what a great looking plant. Hard to find except through mail-order though. New growth is brilliant chartreuse. And being integra, is spineless.

Thanks! I need to screen out an apartment building, but have shade to part shade. Would wax myrtle grow thick enough with this exposure (WNW)? I don’t want to see through it. There’s a privacy fence it’d go in front of, and I’d plant understory shrubs if it got thin at the bottom. I’m in Chapel Hill.
