50 Problems with My 2 Year Old Winnebago Micro Minnie Travel Trailer

UPDATE (April 29, 2021): Since I made this video, 13 more problems came up:
1. The propane regulator on the stove failed, cutting off gas to the stove and oven.
2. The cover protecting the wiring to the awning fell off.
3. The bathroom light is flickering. Replaced the LED module, but it still flickers.
4. The electric jack failed.
5. The plastic fan on the oven ventilation fell off the spindle. Had to be epoxied back on.
6. The bedroom window crank mechanism broke... window now swings open while driving.
7. The roof started leaking in a third place.
8. The pull-down shade holder over the dinette is coming loose.
9. The faucet nozzle on the kitchen sink broke.
10. The plastic knob for the hot water on the bathroom sink broke.
11. The shower head on/off valve broke.
12. The microwave door opened while driving and the glass dish fell and shattered.
13. I ran out of beer. Now that may not seem like Winnebago's fault, but in reality it is, because I only drink too much after stressing out from all the frequent repairs.
Since I bought my Winnebago travel trailer, it has been an endless maintenance game of whack-a-mole. I spent two months on the road and talked to a lot of full-timers and found that most of the big-name trailers are built with similar dismal quality. The advice they gave me was to buy a cargo trailer or bus, and build out an RV from that. There are companies that will do the conversion for you.

Awesome review! Sorry you've had sooooooo many problems. Wish I'd seen this before I bought a 2100BH in the spring. Only used it 6 nights so far, but I can already see little things like wallpaper coming off and construction debris behind panels. If I had seen this previously it's likely Winnebago would have come off the table.

I got 2018 micro Minnie 2100bh. Very poor quality and cheaply built. I had many problems too. My brake away melted off instead of rusting like this guys shows. Awning seized up. Lucky I had my tools. Slide out is now kicking off to one side. Ceiling is now at sagging down and looks terrible from nails letting go. Only one brake works now which just locks up. Wheel bearing shaft looks terrible too, bad machineing job. Water heater controller gave up. Only thing goin for it is it’s weight

I have a 2018 1706FB. I've been living in it full time for almost 3 years. I feel your pain. Out of your list the only issue I didn't have was the leaking windows. This was my first travel trailer and I learned very quickly in the first year what it's all about. I tightened every screw or bolt that I could access. I also, replaced all of the wire nuts I could find with the new Wago lever nuts. 50% of their wire nuts came off with a slight tug. Now that I've basically memorized the wiring and system operations I'm finally happy with my rig. If I had to guess, they don't offer any manuals so most folks will be forced to take their rig to the dealer for $150 per hour labor. Not me, I'll solve it myself. Safe travels.

Great review. You had me “snort laughing” in parts. We’ve just bought our 4th trailer (over 10 years we upsized a couple of times and are now going back to an 18’). We seriously considered a Winnebago mini. Thank Goodness for your review and we have dodged that bullet (we’ve bought a Nash instead). Much appreciation to you.

Lmao!!! You had me rolling!!!... What's not so funny is that my 2018 Coleman LR (bought new) has the same problems and same hardware! From the awning to the end caps to the vent that pops with each breeze to the leftover "junk" under the bottom drawers and rain that leaked on my Amazon bed. I kinda lucked out tho cause mine came with an owner's manual. Just, you have to have a Master's degree to understand it all! I wonder if Coleman and Winnebago are the same company 😮😂 So, while on my mission to shop for a new trailer for 2022, I came across your video. Thanks so much for the laugh!

I bought a new "Minnie" in 2014 with no problems at all in over 8 years and over 33 trips. I have reviewed the Minnies a couple times, and I have noticed that the latest ones are of much lesser quality and much higher prices than what we bought when Winnebago first started making these trailers. I would not buy another Winnebago, and you have strongly confirmed what I have already suspected. Guess I'll keep what I have. If it ain't broke ... don't fix it. Good luck with yours, now that you've fixed it. Thanks for sharing.

I started watching and it felt like the twilight zone because I have a 2018 Minnie with all the same issues. I bought it based on the name too so buyers beware.... the name means nothing. In addition to these issues... I lost my main circuit board that runs the gas heater after my 2nd trip out. Black tank valve is stuck shut and rod won’t go in or out. Most all the blinds pulled out of the walls, and on and on and on. This sounds like a lawsuit to me, so let me know if you decide to do anything.. I am exhausted fixing issues and I have been out 5 times total.

I have a 2019 Winnebago Minnie Travel Trailer 2500FL, and in 3.5 years I have had 4 times the problems that I have on my Jayco Travel Trailer that I had for 7 years. Every time that I go camping there is a new problem. The red color faded quickly badly under the Southwest sun (in about 1 year). I will never buy a Winnebago again.

Anyone who buys a new trailer from a dealer right now is "getting shafted". All of the problems come directly from the manufacturer, and the dealers have no time to fix them before delivery, because they are too busy fixing warranty items from last month's "fool"! One should buy a 2 year old RV from a private party who has already gone to the trouble and time to FIX everything that could go wrong. Thereby, you will be getting a working unit at HALF the msrp of the new one. That depreciation figure alone speaks to the quality of what is coming out of Indiana and it's unregulated RV industry! BTW, this goes DOUBLY for the "high end" brands, which come out of the same garbage in garbage out factories.

Jim, like many we are sorry to hear about your problems with your Winnebago TT. My wife and I bought a 2018 2108DS Micro Mini after looking at various models and options for a couple of years and have also had our share of problems with our purchase, leaks, electrical issues, etc. Two summers ago when checking the brakes I discovered the wheel bearings had an absolute minimum amount of grease applied to them by the factory, almost criminal. As has been mentioned here and in comments elsewhere the industry basically produces junk, some worse than others. I have spoken to a couple of Airstream owners who have had serious issues with their trailers so no one is immune to these problems. From what I have read sales of towables have been just going crazy recently, looser manufacturing standards? more junk? more unhappy customers? I guess we will see. One thing that isn't said is that you really have to be able to work on your vehicle because things WILL go wrong or have very deep pockets to make this a viable pass time. Two companies that just may be the best are Nash and Lance but are very expensive new, not to bad used. Best of luck in the New Year ....... Regards from Canada, Linda and Ivan. PS. We got a manual and it's about as bad as you can imagine.

@wkw4095
@wkw4095 2 года назад
I gotta tell you folks. Winnebago, Forest River ( they make Rockwood Geo Pro and many others) , Coleman, Jayco are all crap with build quality. They literally shake apart in the first few months. The torsion axles do 2 things. They shake the heck out of cabin and the axels are prone to failure ( the rubber innards of the axle that twists and flexes works as suspension fails) . The build quality is already sub par and compounded with pandemic issues including material shortages. Across the board they're all building light weight TT's to meet the demand and they look extremely attractive and offer lots of cool stuff well placed and thought out. Things to expect as an RV owner now; The drawers and cabinetry will fall apart, the plumbing hoses will come apart/fail/leak, wire connections will loosen, A huge one known to happen with Rockwood Geo Pro is the entire cabin structure becoming unbolted from the trailer chassis! , sliders will fail and those cool solid step stairs that fold into the doorway will be a PITA. ;)

Bumper cap fix. Drill a 3/16" hole through the bumper and cap...top and bottom. Cut 6" of hanger wire and bend a 90 degree about 1" down from 1 end. Drop the wire through the holes from the top. I've not lost a cap since doing this.

I have a 2015 1706FB and your video shows that WB has just gotten worse. I can attest to a number of your complaints. In addition ours has suffered delam under the entry side bedroom window and the decals have faded to white sheets of vinyl. My most recent repair is to replace the rear skylight/vents then scrape and reflow all the joints and fixtures with self leveling caulk because they have cracked due to sun damage. I concur on the mattress, leaky basement doors, and rotting paneling there, stabbing window, stove heat, vent lamp, shaky table mount . Also the AC is so oversized that it actually humidifies as it over cools and creates such a large positive pressure that it will push out the stabbing window if it isn't secured and runs with such loud noise that you cannot sleep with it on. I desperately searched for a way to tame that beast, but just gave up in despair. We don't use the trailer when the nights are so warm that AC is necessary. We live in Florida so that rules out most of the year. Next up time to replace the dry rotted tires. Don't get me started on the field mouse damage to the hated AC unit.

@@robinsyverson967 You should look at the public owner reviews on Lance. Everything since they were bought out is just doubly priced problems. As this channel has posted previously, there really are very few quality builders anymore, especially since the pandemic induced RV boom.

Wow 25k. That’s a lot of coin. The RV world knows there are no lemon laws for their products. Therefore, they are protected and quality becomes an idea of the past, unless one buys an Airstream or a high end unit like that. Then you pay through the nose. Also, an rv is made up of a lot of parts manufactured by a lot of different companies. This leads to issues with tolerances, wiring, fitment and so on and so forth. My travel trailer was one of my biggest financial mistakes ever. Thanks for the video and I will not buy another rv ever. I might build my own.

Thank you Jim! I have a 2019 Micro Minnie and the water circulation system leaks at almost every single junction. I’ve replaced almost every original pex pipe and hose clamp between the city input and the pump. Every single hose clamp came loose after 2 years (still clamped on, but no longer a watertight seal). You must have hit this problem by now… the one leaky thing I can’t reach is fresh water tank itself, it’s covered in foam, so I’ve just shut off the line between the pump and the fresh water and just leave the fresh water drain in the open position (since I don’t want to dig down and fix those seals). It’s probably better to give up on the fresh water tank, since the pump was always getting stuck in the “feed water to fresh tank” mode, even when I didn’t want it to… So many problems with the water system! Did you hit these yet yourself?

Welcome to the world of RVs. RVs are just built cheap. All of them. The only variable is which item on your RV will give you problems compared to another person. They're built light to be towed easily but the wear and tear due to roads and bumps will take their toll. Most people can find plenty of problems with their home... and the home is stationary. I'm not trying to downplay workmanship but RVs are like owning a home. Both are a money pit.

I feel your pain! Our 2021 micro Minnie, has had endless problems in less than 5 months. The last straw was the slide that was falling apart and barely went out, leaving us without access to the bathroom. The dealer hasn’t been much help, and we are in the process of trading for a no slide.

Not all slides use the same system. After owning a few campers with slides we could never go without them. @@FunkMasterJunk @CAVOK have you checked all those with positive reviews? Will you allow one or two bad reviews to steer you away? All brands have issues. Btw not released for public yet, but Winnebago just built a special trailer for Traveling Robert with some items for him to test that I think most will want as standard equipment, like an a/c that is quiet and can be run off the battery. The biggest factor on any brand is what dealer you buy from and do they work with you after sale.
@FunkMasterJunk
@FunkMasterJunk 3 года назад
@@forry100 not at all. To be honest, I have seen more negative then positive in my research. I was surprised given the brand name. My Father in law, up until 5 years ago was still running his vintage Winnebago Brave Motor home. It never leaked, never had the cabinets come apart and was still solid. But, from the research I have done, the brand doesent seem to be what it used to be. I've also discovered the company is leaving customers in the cold when it comes to warranties as well. Like I said, I was disappointed to see this, given this was the first trailer that kind of fit the bill for us. You're correct, I have also found out in my research that none of the manufactures high-end or low are perfect in the industry. But with poor build quality and poor Q.A, I'm not sure I want to put my hard earned money into a product that everyone has come to accept poor craftsmanship and bad customer service. I want an R.V to escape and relax, not fix and fight with people.
@forry100

@@FunkMasterJunk on 5th wheel side Alliance has good response, but also fighting OA issues and they were considered to be the best and a game changer for a new company, but their reviews are slipping. While I can not afford it the only one I truly trust is New Horizons, but way out of my budget. I love everything but bedroom height in my 2000 NuWa Hitch Hiker. Back to Winnebago, Traveling Robert had great success with his last trailer and he is allowed to speak honestly about the good and bad. I know if Winnebago makes some of the things part of their build that are test items on the trailer he just took delivery of they will be ahead of most others. Per negatives, they will always out number the positive, people love to complain, but rarely give praise. I still think most issues regardless of brand depends on what dealer you dealt with. A few great ones, a few more good ones, but most dealers suck, take your money and shove you out the door and end of taking care of you. Starting to think the fastest to service and ones that stay on the top are all located near the manufacturers, think they know they must do good. Good luck in your search.

I just spent the last day or so looking into purchasing a new Winnebago Hike 215HS, but after watching a few YT vids about that model and yours, I'm out. Thanks, Jim. I hope your next trailer buying experience is a better one. Winnebago, I hope you're watching these users' reviews, and I hope you learn something. Much like Jim and his area of expertise, my career experience in Quality Assurance fully qualifies me to make the determination that you are selling these trailers by name alone, and not by your quality standards. Selling such sub-standard products, with inherent problems such as what Jim has experienced, is unconscionable. Especially when a good majority of your unsuspecting customers are at or near retirement and unknowingly dishing out 30K plus of their hard-earned savings on junk.

Yeah I had a 2017 Winnebago Minnie Micro too and your issues are similar to what I had. Very poor quality and they've used some of the cheapest components they could find. Also you're kind of lucky that the mattress sagged. Mine it not only sagged but one night it collapsed. They used a balsa like wood as the support on the bottom and used staple gun which gave way. Worst of issue was cheap clamp used for water pump gave way and started leaking and caused water damage to bathroom door and walls around the furnace vent. And guess what? Electrical distribution panel is right where the water pump was and leakage occurred, don't believe me? Go to the dealer and ask them where the water pump is. Sorry about all Of the problems. I have a 2018 2108DS and have only had a couple of issues, nothing like the problems you mentioned. So far only two minor leaks that were fixed. It did have an issue with the kitchen sink drain coming loose once and the valence over the dining room table fell down but was put back up by my dealer at no cost. I have been generally pleased with the overall quality of the trailer but I realize that given the nature of a light weight trailer it is not going to be built like a Sherman tank. I looked at a lot of trailers before I purchased mine and for the money I felt the Micro Minnie was the best deal. I do agree with some of the observations like the reversal of the light switches, the awning that needs to be opened to dry out, the quality of the cushions not being as good as they could be, and the lack of fire wall on the side wall next to the stove. There are some design features there that need to be improved. I am sure that there things I have over looked or come to live with that might irritate some people but not everyone. I have not taken my trailer on any long trips but have spent about 5 weeks of camping in it over the last two years and think I have most of the bugs worked out. There are a few improvements I am planning to make like putting up a firewall in the kitchen, adding a couple of hangers in the bathroom and putting in a new shower head. Of course, we all have our own experiences and opinions so before you buy a trailer be sure to do a lot of research and choose one that best fits your needs.

Good reply. I totally agree with the poster, about not having a fire-wall/heat deflector on the wall that houses the Fridge. Ours (2018 1706FB) is that way as well. We took care of that ourselves for minimal cost. We also take the time to place a large flat garbage bag with two sand-bag made weights to have it drape down the bathroom sink cabinet, facing our shower stall. This way, if any water does splash or escape our closed shower curtain, it will not wet the sink top, or facing cabinet wall...and no water ingress/bloat, delaminating will occur. Takes all of 30 seconds to just take the bag out of the cabinet bottom, hang the garbage bag body off of the top and cabinet, and hold it down onto the sink top, with those two plastic sand bags. We have had no water touch the top surface, or cabinet, in doing this. Just stuff we thought to do...and oh...a suggestion to everybody...before travelling, take our your Microwave GLASS ROTATING PLATTER, and pull your bed covers back, and place it on your mattress, then putting your blanket or comforter back over to make the bed. Leave a pre-made note stating that the Glass Platter is under the covers, to remind you of that fact, and that will prevent (in transit) the chance that the Microwave door will open up, and the Glass Platter come crashing down to the trailer floor. This has indeed happened to some, who have posted their experience, and solution to never have this happen, or happen again. Just stuff, you learn....:)

Jim, OMG your video is timely. I am travel trailer shopping and discovered the Winnebago Mini line just recently. I liked the size and thought Winnebago would be a quality unit but your video is a killer for me. Of all the problems you show the pipe cut at a 45 degree angle and the industrial trash in the hidden locations is the most telling for me of poor quality. Where is the factory located? There must be some unskilled labor and poor quality control processes at that factory. Dan

Couldn't agree more Dan. I actually visited a dealership several weeks ago and emailed them about purchasing the Micro Minnie today! Before they responded I thought I would check RU-vid one more time and stumbled upon this. While I understand the industry is plagued with quality problems, the fact they allow this to continue is criminal.

We were on a road trip, I saw this older gentleman get out of his toyota tacoma pickup with a nice looking pop up camper. I wander over to him and ask if he is busy, no no no I am retired how can I help you? I was curious about your camper. He opens it up, and it is all obviously home made cabinets and drawers. Oh wow I like what you did, do you like this brand of camper? He was a Canadian fella from BC and stated the most accurate thing ever, "they are all shit, just shit, yank everything out and start over." At the time I thought this guy needs to switch to decaf not everyday you meet a Canadian who is overtly grumpy and such! WRONG! I decided I should try this out. I bought an Outfitter camper for our truck, when I went to remodel some stuff due to what I assumed was years of use? Nope, it was just full of stupid. Know how normal people put screws into studs? Not here bro! Just be off by a couple inches, into air. So when you go to dig around in there HELLO TETANUS! My wife didn't know I could swear as much as I did doing that stuff. I wasn't an engineer, I was an instrument tech for a long time, went to school to be an aviation mechanic, and when you said that you were an engineer for 30 years? I just went, yep.

@@The_End_of_Sanity Yeah I've been doing some research before I buy, and learned the same thing. I also read that there's a high turn over when it comes to employment at both parent companies. An airstream and Bigfoot are out of my budget unfortunately.

MR. JIM, What an entertaining video. Much like a lot of people I always thought Winnebago to be one of the best units on the road. They MAY have BEEN, but now I can see they are probably like many other manufacturers, profit,profit profit. Just churn them out boys. NO QUALITY CONTROL. Thanks Jim, I'm looking elsewhere.

Great job on the detail review but you should consider yourself lucky because your trailer still intact. My Forest River R-pod fell apart completely in less than 2 years. Main frame break apart, water leak on walls, floor slump, and almost everything broken. At least you have all the major structure in good and safe condition. So don't feel bad about your winnebago because the whole US RV industry are using cheap materials to build and sell at relatively lower price.

Sorry you got screwed, Winnebago is off my list. I see most brands are the same and a lot don’t honor their warranties either. The only good one I can actually find is Taylor Coach in Canada, if you order ( custom made from them only) one now you won’t get it till September of 2024. Rockwood is a possibility I’m still checking on them.

Ditto Jennifer K! Does anyone have opinions on the Forest River No-Bo’s? My understanding is that Warren Buffet/Berkshire Hathaway conglomeration, which to me has an aura of AMF Harley-Davidson’s from the 70’s, may be cost containing/profit maximizing them into the toilet as well

Well back to looking at Jayco and the Wolf Pup. I wouldn't touch a Winnebago now. Thank you for the heads up. More videos like this are required. Hopefully the company can put their big boy underwear on and compensate you and it looks like many others in your position. Winnebego own up to your issues or go broke please.

All brands are having issues, not just Winnebago. While Winnebago should have done better, how did you talk with them, if with the attitude in the video, not sure I would want to help you. I know plenty of people who have Winnebago products and are happy with them. While a manual would be great, some things just take common sense. Not everyone is meant to own a travel trailer.
