I think me personally, (professional single dude here) I'd prefer it if the girl offer even though I'd probably pay anyways if it was the first date. I just think it shows independence and makes it more comfortable to split on future dates or rotate back and forth between who pays.

Hi Coco, I have been to a lot of places dining alone and it varies, sometimes you are ignored and other times you get attention. People do stare but I just figure they have to look somewhere so it doesn't bother me. One place I went to when I was really watching my money and had become quite thin in the face. I sold some stuff and decided to treat myself to a nice meal. The waitress brought me a big bowl of soup and rolls with the meal I had ordered and I looked at another table and they didn't have the soup so I very softly called her over and whispered I don't think I have enough to pay for the soup, and noticed the other table didn't get soup. She smiled and said it was complementary. I looked at her and tried not to cry because I knew it wasn't, she was just being nice. She gave me the food I couldn't eat to take home and put a slice of pie with it. I thanked her when I left not knowing she had done that. As far as dates go, If I ask someone out to dinner I pay and don't really think about it. If we are just hanging out, sometimes she will pay, sometimes I will pay. I don't think anything is planed out, it just seems to work out. If she wants to pay, I think it is nice she wants to treat. The one thing I do find ackward is when there's a lot of people and they want to split the bill, it always seems so complicated and one person is always angry. I try and avoid that if I can. I've been to jazz and nightclubs alone and just enjoyed the atmosphere,usually stuck off to the side or at the back somewhere, but I don't think I minded. Just enjoy yourself, that's the main thing. I'd say offering to pay for your half is better than not. It demonstrates better positive qualities. Though, it's probably true that people are more likely to split out of politeness or spite if they didn't feel a connection. If you were to vibe with another person, it shouldn't matter in the end, but offering is polite and a positive. I've noticed a lot of reddit posts where guys pay for the full bill multiple times and start to feel resentment that their date never offered.
personally on a date to make it more comfortable for myself n her i usually say before hand something like (i just got paid, so its my treat dw) even if thats not always true. tbh id rather just make it something neither of us need to think abt and whether she decides to chip in and return the gesture i dont really mind.

i usually just pay anyways. it doesnt bother me nor do i think of anything of it. espescially if i asked her out, in my head i just think i should be paying lol. BUT if she wanted to split the bill or if we go to like different vendors, like she pays for one thing, i pay for another, thats cool too. but the thought of her even motioning to or offering let's me know (i hope) that im not a free meal ticket lol
boys and girls think differently. As a boy, it's always welcome that a girl offers. To us it shows that she's not there to freeload off us as an expectation. If you're interested in the boy, don't push it when the boy says he'll pay, because the offer was enough. If you push too much, in a boys mind, yes it can definitely be taken as you're not interested and am paying to provide closure and not have any feelings of owing something. That said, if going out becomes regular, it should be expected that you two would take turns and share the experiences, so not splitting but alternate. Doesn't have to be 1 for 1, just every now and then. You did well. I used to travel for work and dined solo all the time, you'll come to realize no one really thinks about you and your situation as much. Just enjoy the time with yourself =) It's a phase, not forever
Dining alone somewhere fancy is my absolute favorite way to relax and be kind to myself. I can really focus on the food and the environment and just be meditative and unplugged. Glad you got to do so too!
As another single guy, it really depends on the scenario, Most of the time, will end up having that conversation in the date , saying something along the lines of. "How about dessert after?" and then "I'll get this, you get dessert?" as long as there are interest. Unless, she says and insistent , I much prefer splitting the bill, cause of "X" reason, then i'll be agreeable about it. If there is no interest, I feel like guys either cop the cost and then we just never chat again. Post date text is pretty important to communicate after that!

22M here, solo backpacked around SEA & Europe for some time after university. It’s natural to feel anxious on your own, connections are part of human nature, but you’ll realize you can do so much alone. Currently single by choice for the freedom, time, and priorities. On the paying for a meal part, it’s honestly relieving for the lady to offer to split (e.g. defo shows not feeling entitled), but I’d cover it anyways and ask for a next time to split :)
If he is traditional and you want a traditional guy, let him and expect him to pay but you must also be a traditional girl. If you are more modern or progressive, then you can pay for yourself. As you get older, you realize no one cares about you as much as you care about yourself. Sure, people will look and talk for a few seconds but once you are out of sight, they will forget you. Just be a good person and everything will work out.

I have solo-dined a lot and it is actually better to the point that I know I'll have good time by myself while I may or may not with another person or a first date. There is however the downside of only being able to try half as much food 🫥 but I couldn't care less about what others think at the diner.

Maybe just act more like you're there to review the food, instead of telling yourself you're on a "Solo date". It just might work to reduce social anxiety when people stare.
i find myself always eating alone at a place where most of my classmates are eating at, and it honestly feels so awkward when i see them too and i keep getting away from them for just not being awkward. is anyone here experiencing this, i wanna know how you overcome this 😭
Me personally (with a bit of experience) I love it when we do a 2 second dance and we come to an agreement that I get to pay for the first date and the girl pays for the second. It's the definition of "I'm interested, and I'm willing to invest into this / it's not just a free meal for me." But also I know women have concerns about safety and about weird people so I offer to pay on the first every time because I'm less at risk and I appreciate them giving me the time of day in general. The second date means they actually want to see me! :)
Also the Chinese content was goated, I hope you do more of that especially if it means you'll say more of what you want to say in a public space without feeling judged!!
