Legendary!!! Watched the whole thing. For me, these ranged from I totally knew that, I totally forgot about that, and mind-blowing I never knew you could do that! You have once again redefined the Vital education genre. Thank you for everything my friend. You have been extremely generous with your knowledge and I truly appreciate you!
This is crazy, I watched this months ago. And watching it again to brush up, and it's like I'm watching it for the first time. It's all blowing my mind.
I'm only 25 mins in right now but this is quite informative so far. Perfect if you generally understand synthesis and you've taken a little to familiarize yourself with the basics of Vital - this is basically a huge info dump of all the stuff you'd probably never figure out without RTFM-ing.
waaaaaaaaad, i´m still at minute 38 after the third weekend, most of your inputs here inspire deep sessions of tone exploring and after 30min i remember that i´m watching your video
Happy Birthday, Vital! Such a masterpiece of a synth. absolutely fabulous for music as well as sound design. Thanks a bunch for your tips, and the effort you took to put 50 timestamps. Not that I used them because I watch all the way through, but still... kudos! Subscribed. Have a glorious weekend.
We should petition Vital to create an effects plugin. It could be the exact plug in minus the oscillators. Maybe instead of the oscillators they could turn them into inputs that you could run in parallel or in series. They could add a buffer for granular looping or freezing. And if they had that, a wav drag and drop function.
All the code for Vital is up on github and if I'm not mistaken there's an open source license allowing for something like that. Anyone could just make that thing provided it's also open source.
This is a fantastic source of information, thank you! If I could just give a small uber-technical note.. When you modulate the phase with an LFO its Phase Modulation, FM is when you modulate the pitch (or frequency). Sorry to be that guy, I'm sure thats something you already know. It was just something that was nagging at me though. :3 Your content is phenomenal though. You've got actual helpful tips to inspire people to create their own patches instead of just running through a patch you made so people can copy it, which is something I genuinely appreciate.
@@DashGlitch I've heard such in regards to serum specifically. I mean can you blame them? PM sounds very similar, some might argue better if there is such a thing when comparing different forms of synthesis. I have yet to get phase plant but the videos I've seen look insane and it appears to me that it's incredibly intuitive with the way it implements modulators specifically but the oscillators are kind of neat as well. This is a slight bit of a tangent; and I know FM8 is old as dirt, but do you think that it is actually utilizing PM as well? Not that it even matters but you reminding me of other synths using PM disgused as FM had me curious.
@@brailyndsummers FM8 uses the algorithms from the DX7 which was the original PM sold as FM design. I'm pretty certain it implements it using PM as well. PM requires far less resources and generally tracks the pitch correctly over the sweep, while true FM can detune the carrier signal.
@@DashGlitch Interesting, you learn something new everyday. Thanks for your reply man. Really enjoyed the video, it was the first of yours that I've seen and it gave me a lot of different ideas.
So glad that this was the very first of your videos I watched! Mind Blown! So many streamers fail to do what you just did in that they do not go DEEP ENOUGH! You knocked it out of the park! Seriously keep it up! For those of us just getting into synths it is so incredibly critical for artists like yourself to get right into even the most complex of patches so that from your sharing we can learn and increase our own knowledge base from which to expand our own musical art and talent! Thanks so much!
Amazing video with a lot of useful and insightful tips and tricks for Vital. Thanks for putting in the effort to collect this amazing collection of tips and tricks.
Great video! Perfect mix of explanation with demonstrating the sounds (so many channels get this wrong) - I’ve had vital for a while but just delving into it now that I have more time, and this video is perfect. Not too simple, but conveys advanced concepts great for a beginner with Vital. Thank you, I will surely be back to the channel for more.
Cool vid! A small observation: 3 octaves up is the 8th harmonic, not the third. The third harmonic is up 1 octave+1fifth, or 3 times the frequency of the fundamental/first harmonic. Every time you go up an octave, you double the frequency, whereas harmonics are just integer multiples of the fundamental. The second harmonic is indeed up one octave, because it is simply 2 times the frequency of the fundamental. But the third harmonic is not another octave up from that, it's 1.5 times the second harmonic, or 3x the fundamental. To go up another octave, you need to double the frequency of the SECOND harmonic, which gives you 4x the frequency of the fundamental; this is thus the fourth harmonic. Going up another octave after that gets you the eighth (4*2) harmonic. There are harmonics that do not fall on octaves, and these are the ones that are not powers of 2. That includes 3...
For micro tuning I’m going to try phi and divide it by 2,3,4,5,6 and see what I get. Also pi. Phi is 1.618 as the everything in nature has a ratio of 1 to 1.618, there must be something there for sure.
The timestamp for number 36 doesn’t work (it’s missing a colon) and so it doesn’t appear in the chapters of the video. Just something to go back and quickly fix! Great video though! There were lots of moments that made me go “woah, you can do that??”
Anyone else have trouble with vital resetting presets? I.e. say I select preset "Lead 3", then exit the synth. When I reopen it, if I decide to switch presets, vital goes back to the default preset
Is there a place where I could download/purchase the demolead1 preset? The sound at 11:15 is insanely close to a sound I've been trying to achieve, but I can't seem to mimic the results well enough from just the video, I'd love to be able to tweak the actual preset along with the video and then mess around with it myself :)
im sorry for my dumbness, so does any one use Vital for live performance? i was not finding how to route my midi controller for a standalone vital use. As i plan to use it live, I finally discover that if i route some knobs to your controller for what i want to manipulate and save the preset, you dont have to route again and again each time you open vital... damn im such a newby it hurts
No once you have mapped your midi controller it will remember every time it's opened so you will only have to do it once. Yes I use it for live performances and it is fine, although I use it through my Daw so I don't have to flick through to menu to find the sounds i use.
Dash, what you have put together here is an absolutely stonking goldmine! I think this has to be the new go-to bible for Vital. After only a few minutes I knew I would be re-visiting quite a number of these tips, so I put together a handy reference guide: 01) 0m48: Osc octave shift 02) 1m26: folders 03) 2m22: semitone/Herz 04) 3m48: copy/paste 05) 4m51: pitch quantise/transpose snap 06) 6m59: Env view maximise 07) 7m57: Osc phase retrig 08) 8m46: stereo Modulation 09) 12m54: LFO Env riser 10) 14m22: LFO modes 11) 17m46: freeze LFOs 12) 18m54: Unison modes, chords 13) 21m11: LFO delay and smooth, (modulating Smooth to get ramp) 14) 21m44: audio-rate/keytracked LFOs 15) 24m36: Mod remap 16) 27m37: pitch/note Key-tracking (kicks) 17) 29m07: shift-drag curves 18) 29m54: Mod matrix: bipolar/unipolar 19) 20) 31m48: Vital routing and filter combinations 21) 37m08: Wavetable editor 22) 38m13: Wavetable editor: custom filter 40m40: Wavetable editor: warping 23) 42m13: Wavetable editor: wave-folder 24) 43m08: Wavetable editor: slew limiter 25) 43m48: LFO phase (incl mod remap) 26) 46m48: LFO as Macro 27) 48m53: Filter types 28) 50m08: Filter drive 29) 53m28: Resample to Wavetable 30) 54m57: audio in Wavetable editor 31) 58m00: stacking waveforms in Wavetable editor 32) 59m30: import microtonal files 33) 1h00m47: Keytracked EQ 34) 1h03m37: Keytracking SCW in Smp Osc 35) 1h05m35: loop playback in Smp 36) 1h07m38: remove fundamental 37) 1h10m36: .vitalbank = .zip 38) 1h11m42: switches using Macro and Mod Remap 39) 1h16m08: random gate sequences 40) 1h18m43: random switching between random sequences 41) 1h25m52: Env hold bugfix - use LFO 42) 1h28m37: freeze Phaser filter 43) 1h29m39: MPE, polyphonic midi 44) 1h33m21: note-on Random freeze 45) 1h34m33: reverb from Chorus 46) 1h36m18: modulating short Delay times 47) 1h38m42: extend range of parameters 48) 1h40m13: resonator from tuned Flanger 49) 1h42m46: resonator from tuned Comb Filter 50) 1h44m29: and now put it all together!
I've first heard about Vital a couple of weeks ago and yesterday and today I was looking for some Vital walkthroughs. And out of the sudden this video drops. Perfect timing. Seems to be a very exciting synth and very well crafted. LFO/envelope animations are superb. Can't believe it's free.
why in the fkinnn world would phase retrig not be set to default!!!! its like the dumbest things they could have put, really tilted me seeing thats the phase randomizer by default is at 100%, LIKE WHAT!!!!
VITAL is as precise as you make it. If it’s sloppy, then the user made it sloppy. Dash is genius, and VITAL is genius. It’s Protonic /alchemical witchery. It’s lead into gold!
Vital is - in one word - super! Sadly, the stand-alone (the way I use it) version does not let me choose the MIDI channel...unless...I missed that option somewhere...
Why does this video have interlacing?? This is a goldmine of info but I can't stop staring at the horizontal lines. Please make sure when you export from your video editing software, that the preset you export with doesn't have an i at the end, i being for interlacing. so use 1080p not 1080i preset.
Listen Bro ,you can shameless plug all you want its all good the work you put into teaching us sausages music deserves notice ill be buying those wavetables someday ,thank you great video Dash Glitch
I'm on #17 and my brain is already full - I consider myself quite technical and competent with synthesis/sound design and have somehow missed all but 2 of these capabilities so far, despite having already fallen in love with Vital and spending many many hours going down what I previously considered "the rabbithole" 🤯 So now I am pressing pause and mastering these 15 new techniques before continuing on with the rest of your video. This is like going to Vital college, for real Thank you SO MUCH for this deep deep deep dive, I can't wait to see what else this beautiful instrument has in store!
Great video that explained a lot.. I do, however, have quite a difficulty to create a simmilar rich sound in chapter 5, quantizing. having just a base note in Ablleton Live in an 8-bar loop does give random notes/sounds but it is quite a empty dound, compared to your example. Did you do any changes to other settings, or just a random automation to the pitch? Thank you
Thank you Dash!! You mention being able to remove harmonics at the source of the bassline in the wavetable is best, I agree with this practice but I think I can learn more about harmonics and the fundamentals.. I'm just not sure how to go about finding the fundamental information about harmonics and such.. How were you introduced to that if I may ask? I am getting close but I still don't know EXACTLY how to build what I want.. I assume understanding Harmonics in full is kind of like a golden ticket to designing bass..? Idk tho lol Thanks again
if that were the case I'd have made a video about it, just keep learning and growing your overall sound vocabulary and these things will start slotting into place. Most of these discoveries come through practical application.
God this thing is so powerful and sounds so GOOD. God bless Vital for providing it to the masses for free. Really makes me wonder why I even have other synths that I paid for...
Dash Glich, your videos are always so good and informative! recently I tried to update the great Vital 1.5.x and it has a strange GUI behavior, like a serious error! To fix this, it's very simple, just exchange the custom Skin for another created for Vital Community and that's it! Your Vital back to life!🎉
