Dandelion Wine The reason why Gagarin's spacecraft was ground controlled was due to the fact that the mission planners were not sure that an astronaut was not in danger of losing councioucness at some point in the flight. That said, Gagarin was fully trained to manually fly the space vehicle if the up link failed. Trying to down play Soviet achievements in space travel is laughable at best and disrespectful at worst.

To even play to the landing-the-craft definition is silly, because the FAI would have recognized the flight regardless, the stretching of the truth on the situation was due to the expectation that the US would dispute the validity of the flight. Once it was public that Gagarin didn't land inside the capsule some 4 months later, the FAI changed their guidelines to remove the requirement of landing inside the capsule (which itself was based on a rather dated conception of spaceflight of being similar to flying any aircraft, rather than being an overwhelmingly automated process still today.) Further, Freedom 7 hardly even counts as a space flight, there is an immense difference between simply crossing the Karman line, and actually entering into orbit. The Redstone rocket, in its most advanced configuration, struggled to put more than 30 pounds into orbit, where the R-7 was putting 10,000 pound payloads into orbit by 1962. Comparing Freedom 7 to Vostok 1 is near literally comparing a short-range missile to an ICBM, they're an order of magnitude apart. The truth is that the US didn't put a man into orbit until a year after the USSR did, the glorification of Freedom 7 as being on par with Vostok 1 is a surviving propaganda point to allow the US to save face, which didn't then, and still doesn't reflect reality. It was especially embarrassing for the US as the USSR had carried out two separate crewed orbital missions before the US managed its first one, some 6 months after the second Soviet mission.
