About this Salon
The Club of Rome, a global think tank, has been committed to the sustainable future of humanity since 1968, focusing on major trends against the background of long-term and interdisciplinary thinking. The purpose of this salon series carrying its name is to highlight areas where systemic changes can make a significant difference for a better future.
What conclusions can be drawn from The Limits to Growth? Which one of the scenarios represented in the book is the development path we are on? And what actions can be taken based on the insights gained? The Limits to Growth is causing as much controversy today as it did when it was first published in 1972: questioning the paradigm of never-ending economic growth seems to be indisputable to some while others - including the Club of Rome - look at it as a necessity to remain within the confines set by planetary boundaries.
The core message of The Limits to Growth indicates that population growth in conjunction with excessive resource consumption and capital growth undoubtedly results in a collapse scenario. The application of technology to apparent environmental problems may delay such a scenario but not put an end to it. Even within the “green movement,” there are diverging opinions on whether there can be green growth or whether degrowth is a viable option.
The dialog will focus on the consequences of The Limits to Growth in relation to today’s political and economic challenges. The speakers will explore which economic limitations may already exist with regards to the consumption of natural resources or the emission of greenhouse gases. We will discuss the necessity for political decisions and regulatory adaptations (such as a carbon taxes) as well as future-oriented measures in the German and global economy driven by responsible corporations.
Prof. Dr. Dennis Meadows led the research team at MIT whose efforts culminated in The Limits to Growth (1972). He has been a tenured professor in faculties of management, engineering, and social sciences. Prof. Meadows has developed innovative and complex strategic games. He has received numerous international awards for his work, including the Japan Prize in April 2009.
Ms. Saori Dubourg is Member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE. She is responsible for BASF’s global businesses in Monomers, Performance Materials, Petrochemicals, and Intermediates. Furthermore, she oversees the region Europe, the startup trinamiX, and the BASF Corporate Sustainability Board.
Dr. Patrick Graichen serves as State Secretary, Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs & Climate Action. From 2014 to 2021, he was Executive Director and Managing Director of Agora Energiewende, a non- profit think tank that develops strategies to advance the goal of climate neutrality in Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world.
The speakers’ impulse statements will be followed by a conversation moderated by Jörg Geier to further explore the topic.

The goal of these internationalists: impoverish the many and enrich the few. Their MO: Engineer the problems into existence, then provide the "solutions".

You just know that those BASF and government representatives want to say the words 'Green growth' straight out, but know they need to use different words after Meadows spoke. Both those institutions overtly front growth as their goal. Such people never quantify relative productivity of envisaged and current energy sources and the ability of energy systems to renew both themselves and the increasingly large and complex societies they must supply, nor what is required in terms of mineral and other resources (at ever increasing energy cost at the margin) on an ongoing basis and on a global scale to achieve their pie in their sky dreaming aimed at not having to change the status quo in any real sense. It's all just airy-fairy words and no real substance. They are basically automatons programmed suggest that the same systems, institutions and thought processes should address the problems that have been largely caused by those same systems, institutions and thought processes. And that a painless solution will somehow just materialise if we just trust in the same path that got us into the huge mess we're now in.

As a slogan, it's not what people love , but a fact in reality. In fact it's a punch line for the planet and more so and evident ever since. Thanks for the thought provoking event. Not the messenger the consumer's society want. Thanks for the effort and keep up the good work. From Hker worldwide

There's only one way to measure. PPM greenhouse gases pollution. Until the increases stop, reverse we're making the situation worse. No other measure has the precision required.

Lets decouple economic growth from resource, so that companies make a ton of money with renewable techno, continue to invest in lobbying to buy pathetic power cravers (politicians), and let everybody else in a lot worst situation that we were in. The only path that is realistically left is a coordinated de-growth... instead government will continue to increase debt (which is a claim on future growth) and hide the problems until it is perfectly clear that growth will stop and then everything will collapse... While it may seems pessimistic, this is my rose-coloured glasses scenario :)

The problems the women mentions in the introductory speech as "threatening to derail" action are all symptoms of the fact that so far there HASN'T been much action that could now be derailed. And rather than derailing or delaying change these problems should serve as a wake-up call and spur us into immediate action. That said I don't really want to pay even more for food and energy than I already am... People should have listened to Meadows 50 years ago. Kudos to him for not succumbing to cynicism and being willing to join the panel in his (relatively) old age now. We should certainly remain optimistic, and probably more so than Meadows himself. Because his current perspective is clear enough. "I've shifted my focus from sustainable development to resilience." In plain English that means "brace for impact". Let's hope he's wrong.

The human ability to overcome is misplaced in this conversation. We're at the limits of well understood physics. In the past physics was our friend and benefactor. Yet the general population like the folks high on hopium in this video feel physics has no boundaries. In addition since 1972 when limits to Growth was published we've doubled population and exponentially grown fossil fuels use. Stunning that a room full of clearly intelligent folks no one sees the self induced civilization ending meteor coming straight at us! Simultaneously we're locked in another meaningless sadistic war and working overtime to start ANOTHER one with China. Remarkably irresponsible....

BMW Foundation?! WTF? Go and stop building cars, it's the best thing you can do! And the Quandt family-who are particularly responsible for taking action as they are part of the problem-should donate their money-at least 95% of it - to fight climate change.
