500 S&W Bullets from a SHOTGUN Experiment

Tim Hamilton sent us some bullets for us to load up to see how they perform out of a rifled shotgun. These bullets were never designed for a 12ga shotgun and there is NO load-data available. It takes a LOT of experimentation to get the powder loads ideal for something like this. This proof-of-concept was successful enough to show these WILL work. (yes it is 500 S&W not .50 S&W)

snikrepak, I'm pretty sure that by "rifle" they meant "long gun." It could've also just been a joke. Shotguns can have rifled barrels, so I don't really see your point there, anyway. Another thing: old muskets had smoothbore barrels and were considered rifles, so your claim is just plain wrong.

Yeah, we found most of the sabots and only a couple were undamaged. It was weird because nearly all the sabot were in a relatively small area 50 yards from where we were shooting. lol

I support this theory. It looks like perfect round for fully rifled barrel. But I think accuracy problems caused by wadding which is sometimes un-uniformely detaches from the slug. Powder load is perfect, BTW :). Maybe if wad petal's base be a little bit weaker... so petals could be spread more easily and this could provide cleaner separation. And maybe you don't need to take effort to put bullet in place :) the G force will do it for free ;) and this will soften the recoil.

Yo I love OG on this channel ask anyone, but Danny held it down and knows what he's talking about no nonsense. Good balance. I'd take OG on the massive and wild shells but danny on the tight guaranteed know the shape shells. And both firing alternately and going downrange to check out the target would be Top Gear level funny

I have read if you set your rest on the barrel it throws the harmonics off and that will change the point of impact...that being said I dont know if that applies to shot guns... just thought I would throw that out there. I did notice "OG" lol was resting the barrel on the rest. anyhoo love the videos!

@egorney
@egorney 6 лет назад
This was a great experiment. Good results. Although fyi if you were checking the grouping you really have to shoot all three shots with the same point of aim. After you check for the consistency of the group you can adjust your scope or your aim. I was really interested to see what the grouping would be, even through the velocities were not consistent, but the grouping did not say anything with him adjusting point of aim after the first shot.

Call the gel blocks "Tactical dirt camouflaged ballistic gel towers". People won't notice how past their prime these are... Possibly.
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 6 лет назад
eh, they'll still complain lol. People don't realize how expensive those clear blocks of gel are or how short of a lifespan it has. I'd go broke(r) if I used that in videos.
@a.c.m.4548
@a.c.m.4548 6 лет назад
No joke. I've looked into them myself, they're not cheap! Have you considered having a GIANT trash bag behind every shot to catch the gel chunks so you don't lose more material? I'm sure it would totally work and look great on faux-motion.
@taofledermaus
@taofledermaus 6 лет назад
You don't loose any when you shoot them. You will lose some when you cut out the parts of the gel that become dirty from the bullets. Remelting and recasting it is very time consuming - an all day job that has to be constantly monitored. Each time you remelt it, the gel degrades and darkens.
@a.c.m.4548
@a.c.m.4548 6 лет назад
I knew about recasting being a huge pain and about it darkening overtime, but I had no idea you didn't lose any... That's so surprising since it always looks like there are small pieces flying in every direction on high speed. I think what you should do (if you haven't already) is a series of videos showing your whole process of gel block 'remanufacture' starting after range time and ending after the next range time.

I suggest that when shooting you rest the pump handle on the rest instead of the barrel because I've heard it can have a negative effect on accuracy
@TreeTop1947
@TreeTop1947 6 лет назад
I KNOW that it will negatively affect the accuracy of a rifle but I've never actually tried it with a shotgun. Jeff, that might be good video topic. Fire three rounds of the same load, while resting on the barrel directly on the rest, then try three rounds with the weight of the shotgun resting on the forearm and compare the accuracy. Semper Fi, TreeTop

TreeTop1947 that's a great idea
@mr.357mag4
@mr.357mag4 6 лет назад
TreeTop1947 On a tube magazine shotgun, it shouldn’t matter. The barrel will be secured to the tube and receiver, unless it’s a loose fit (then you have a different problem to deal with). But that may be true with a Saiga or a Vepr. Never handled one, never took one apart. Although the same should apply to most semi autos that are tube fed (barrel shouldn’t move).

I think it was the sabot's, they seem to snap around the bullet abit too snug making for a good bit of drag on the round over all. Also the sabot breaking up in the barrel or having a delayed release of the bullet would account for the variation in velocity and accuracy as well.

As to the accuracy, I think the slo-mo of the bowling pin is telling. Note the sabot upper right is missing one of the legs. Like OG said, that's a tough piece of plastic. Whatever dynamic caused the leg to sheer off has to affect the flight. Could it have cracked a leg when the bullet was snapped in place?

For the inconsistant points of impact, my guess would be that the sabots are having difficulty releasing the bullet. Seating the bullet in the sabot seemed a bit tough. The friction resistance as the sabot left the bullet could pull the bullet off course by air resistance from the sabot opening with slight variations. If you modify the sabot so that the bullet drops in and falls out just as easily, and it ends up being accurate, then you have your cause.

Made these several years ago when BPI had firs made the blue sabot wads with good results out to 100 yds. Actually I made them with the earlier white wads as well. Pedals were stiff on the first ones and it helped accuracy to pre open them then load em up. I’ve also messed around with 50 cal lead bullets but you have to find ones that fit the wads well so it takes some experimentation
