Our final stop on the west coast brings us to the University of Washington in Seattle Washington. After filming interviews for our documentary we ran into a family that was faced with homelessness due to their student loans taken out for chiropractic school. This was a powerful moment for us to see how deep this problem holds down hard working Americans from across the country.
We are on a nation wide tour to eliminate student loan debt.. How are we doing this? With the STUDENT DEBT DESTROYER!!
Check the tour dates if we are coming to your town/city!

I feel you bro… my broke ass friends and family actually thought I was “struggling” until they saw that I PAYED OFF MY HOUSE in the 30s and have more assets than them… I actually left college deliberately before completing it because I kept changing majors and didn’t know what to do and my parents didn’t have enough money to make me continue, so I left rather than take on debt. I did the math, where I work, truck drivers make on average $90,000 gross and they take home the SAME MONEY as debt free VETERINARIANS across the street working at a animal hospital OR about the same as a “normie” dentist/primary care physician loaded up on $300,000 in student loans debt. ITS NOT WHAT YOU MAKE, ITS WHAT YOU GET TO KEEP! If people don’t pay their monthly student loan payments, the state and school can actually withhold their transcripts/credentials and they could lose their jobs.

As of today after paying off my private loan completely in one large payment. I only have about 22-23k in federal SL debt (total at graduation was around 47k, I paid off the private SL in 10 months). How does $500,000 in school loans make sense for a salary around $100,000? Did no one love this man enough to warn him that the return on this investment is too low? This comment will garner some hate, but is half a million dollars a reasonable investment for taxpayers to produce one chiropractor? Should we sink $200,000 into a person to earn a gender studies degree? Resources are finite and we need to prioritize. If we can't even keep the lights on to millions in California, how can we justify pouring resources into jobs that create relatively small benefit to our society? "The system" is not holding them down. They are in $500K of SL debt, due to choices they have made, the first being where he decided to go to school. Is the SL system broken? Yes. But, if the government would stop guaranteeing unlimited amounts of money to go to college, then colleges would be forced to bring their costs down, because people could not afford to go to school. If people knew that they had to pay for it themselves, they would make different choices.

"If people knew...., they would make different choices".... That's the whole point. People are scammed into this without knowing the truth. I was a naive 17 year old teen girl who knew nothing about loans. I was a straight A student and I was afraid of my mother who would yell at me whenever I dare to think differently. She decided that the school loan was the best decision for me, and together with the loan officer, they pressured me into signing it, promising automatic high pay no matter where I happen to work. They literally told me the loan would disappear by itself in the future, and so, I don't even have to think about it. I was terrified to even dare to think differently from my mother. She taught me to always think that she always knows better and I should follow her "knowledge of life".....how could I know if it was all a set up? I thought my mother would never do anything against me? I regret being so obedient and gullible. But that's who those predatory loan officers rely on and exploit - they use their pitch as an "expertise and nearly scientific type of expertise" - a true solution for "perfect financial future" for young and stupid school graduates who believe in the goodness of public institutions. And all they need is a word salad to gaslight us into thinking that they care for us just as the public schooling did, as many teachers in high school would say the same thing and praise debt for education! That's just wrong - exploiting young and unaware gullible teenagers into a life-long slavery of debt.... I went through real hell to pay off my school debt. I am debt free now and a low income earner with Master's and Bachelor's degrees. One thing I learned for sure - for the sake of one's own financial well-being, one must have zero trust in family members' financial "knowledge" or banks' financial "aide" or government's "help"...

First Quiropractors are not doctors so start by naming it for what really is. Second your husband got in it without doing enough research on roi and crunch numbers if those 500k where worth it. Third you took loans for living expenses instead of one of you going to work while the other goes to school. Financial literacy starts at home, where were his parents before he took all that debt?. Fourth you decided to have kids instead of focusing on paying debt before start a family you could be working to help your husband with his mess. And last you not paying anything towards that debt it's making it worse the interest its conpounding when you realize itll be 700 instead of 500 he better be working 15 hours days 7 days a week so he doesnt fall deeper in the hole. You have both made poor life choices so you have to bail out yourself.

The husband began Chiropractic school most likely in 2012 and didn't know how much a Chiropractor makes? A simple google search estimates most chiropractors make between $80-$100k a year. His ROI will be terrible over the course of his life. He attended Cleveland Chiropractic school in Kansas City which posts a trimester tuition of $11,785 (2019) or $35,355/yr. Expanded over 4 years comes out to $141,200 for tuition just using 2019 data. Something is seriously wrong with their story.

Agreed. Although I am a teacher and still paying undergrad loans, I consolidated them, and am paying just $138/month. I chose to attend graduate school. I learned two things about financing it: 1) (after I was nearly finished) you could rake out student loans for it. 2) even if I knew I could borrow, I would not even think about borrowing. I decided to work 2 jobs, pay my rent, budget, and pay CASH for it. My younger brother and I used to joke about my bi-yearly $1,700-$2,100 tuition bills. (I took 4-5 credit hours a term and finished in about 4.5 years). I had a 2 bedroom apartment (and a modest $235/mo car payment) in a Detroit suburb, one job long term subbing in Detroit (1.5 mikes from the school I long termed at), and my second job was at a high end grocery store on the evenings and weekends. Now I am teaching full time, my wife, daughter, and I live in a very nice house and very well within our means, and no, we are not rich. James, it's people like you who constantly remind me of why I paid for my school the way I did. :-)

Determine your goals and always have a solid plan. Don't go to an expensive school, if you aren't receiving any scholarships that will at least cover 75% or more of your tuition and housing expenses. Also, before signing up for any student loans, understand the terms of the loan contract (amount that you are borrowing and the interest rate). NEVER take out a private loan to finance your education .. and exercise extreme precaution when taking out federal student loans. Realize that the debt compounds; therefore, the amount borrowed will grow with time (if not paid off in full, immediately). --Also, choose your career plans wisely. You should genuinely be interested in what you study, but at the same time your choice of a major should be very practical, in terms of allowing you to put yourself to work after you complete your education. I attended an elite private school on a full scholarship and completed an elite masters program at a very expensive elite private school in Manhattan. I graduated with a small amount of debt, compared to how much both schools costs.. Note however that I worked full time in my profession (after graduating from college) and my job provided tuition reimbursement. I planned well and it worked out for me.

Hi I noticed you mentioned that financial literate people and low-income families get financial aid and dont get into debt as middle class families do. I want to shed more light on this comment since I was raised in a lowincome single parent household, received financial aid BUT not all financial aid will cover the ENTIRE cost of your schooling and LIVING expenses. I graduated UC DAVIS with 38,000 in student loans. This money went to cover my remaining 2 years, a laptop, and living expenses because my family could not support these things financially. I was financially illiterate going into school as a first generation student but if I knew back then what I know now I would do everything all over again differently because I did make dumb decisions I didnt know were dumb back then like traveling abroad through school which contributed 12,000 to my student debt (when you can totally travel and be in a health internship outside of school for waaaaaay cheaper!) I also took a 5th year due to a change in my major which was dumb to do but hey I didn't know what I wanted to do when I first went into school I just thought going to a UC was going to be me and my families way out of poverty.There is so much more to this story but I wanted to mention that low income families face different struggles than middle class families and have also ended up in massive debt. I love what your doing by the way! Shedding more light on this topic will prevent future generations from doing the same thing and will be able to do things differently, AS for us in debt, I think we should try to get out of it as soon as possible! I know its not easy tho! but its possible!

The D Hive Podcast thanks for sharing your story and adding to what I mentioned! You worked hard and made smart decisions with your money by not blowing it and spending money on extravagant purchases while STILL being a student at a uc! Your story and mine is what I was hoping more people could learn about by reading my original comment. This debt crisis is affecting people who were smart and managed their money well throughout college, like you! It’s just that tuition has skyrocketed so much, making it difficult for people to afford it without accruing any debt. I also worked throughout college and never bought anything either because most of the time I couldn’t afford anything!! Are u almost done paying your student loans down? I’m planning to start a series on my RU-vid channel on wealthbuilding tips about how to save, budget and pay down student loan debt. I’ve learned abit and want to apply other things I’ve learned and would love to learn from others like you who are on a debt free journey as well! I’m posting my first video on this series next week on Monday if you’d like to check it out :) but no pressure! While I am against complete student loan forgiveness , you took out a loan deal with it. I Amin favor of converting the loans to 0.00 percent interest that way the problem does not grow exponentially. Say you graduate with 30,000 in debt , that is what you owe full stop, interest stops once you graduate

I don’t make my life decisions based on who might tell me no or in hopes that I’ll be lucky. I do what I can and let God take care of the rest. My main point was simply that he had a plan to handle the large debt he knew he would be taking on. Also, he chose a field that would give a sufficient return on his educational investment. Lately, I’ve been seeing a lot of people owe $100-200k+, but their field will max out at $70-80k, or they decide to do something different altogether that doesn’t pay much. I agree with his point on a lack of formal financial literacy training, but accountability is important as well. What I mean is that it is okay to say the system is in need of repair, but it is at the very least an inaccurate portrayal to make it seem as though all students with student loans are victims. Making a bad financial decision doesn't necessarily make you a victim, even if it is tragic that in many cases we are talking about children making decisions they weren't ready to make. Before the laws are changed -- which they probably ought to be -- I think that people need to ask the question on whether or not their degree is worth what they will be paying for it. But yes, no one should be lending $200k no questions asked to an 18-22 year old, when I have to supply an absurd amount of financial information to get a $150k mortgage that already has the home attached as collateral.
@buckeyeshuman3945

I completely agree. Every person with student loans made a choice of where they were going to school, and chose what to major in. $980,000 in student loan debit after 32 years in practice making income contingent payments. The government loans are supposed to be “forgiven” after 20 years of payment. This forgiveness then takes the amount and reposts it to the IRS as income. This would produce a tax liability of @$200,000. My financial advisor told me “he paid off his loans by working hard and he does not believe in loan forgiveness”. I think that I incurred debt (the debt started after residency at @$240,000) due to desire to become a doctor and no financial literacy of what compounding interest can do. In this case the debt increased almost 4 x even with payments made regularly. My retirement, with planning by age 70 (working a total of 47 years as a doctor) will provide me with enough to live at “poverty income”. Financial Literacy and resetting young people with a simple interest loan is a good solution. I do not agree with Dave Ramsey’s advice to “live like a poor college student” and completely compromise your quality of living as a solution. I do believe in responsibility but this system is clearly extortionist on individuals of the middle class with limited financial education. Thanks for reading. I’m just one story.

Who did all this forcing - if your smart enough to go to college you should be financially literate. These young adults feel entitled to go to any college they “want”’and accept the loans to do it without understanding the consequences of their actions. How to destroy debt? Pay your debt faithfully! It is not the fault of the lender who lend student money to pay for the tuitions. It is a choice to get into debt and the obligation to pay for what was borrowed is an elementary and basic knowledge of finance. Even my 13 and 15 yr old kids know that, how much more college students. Having 500k student loans is unjustifiable unless you're a doctor or a lawyer, both earns big. But even then one can be a doctor or a lawyer at half the costs or even less if one chooses to go to less expensive schools and not necessarily to a high calibre university. It is a matter of responsible and practical choice.
