5029 Nunney Castle epic slog up Torre Bank at Torre Station 16/09/2014

One of the best videos in turns of steam against the gradient and noise level ever. The noise of a Castle slogging up a gradient will always be loud.
I decided to head to Torre due to a steep gradient out of Torquay which as steep as 1 in 55 up to Torre Station and was worth going to in the end. She can be heard leaving Torquay behind as she powers up the bank and then the heavy gradient took advantage of the Castle. Happily, she got up to Torre station but by then was at walking pace and had another climb to tackle after passing through up to Newton Abbot. She was running about 5 mins late at the point she reached the station.

I saw this train by chance ( Whilst was getting my car washed! ) through Torbay, I don't know anything about trains, But indeed, a wonderful, beautiful piece of history! :)

The driver was taking the bank nice and steadily, not trying to show off. He could have made a lot more noise had he so wished.

The engine did not seem to be being worked very hard and it was blowing off all the way; obviously with steam to spare. If the driver had wanted to, he could have opened up a bit more, but instead he was just doing a nice workmanlike job of taking the train up the bank.

Just as an afterthought, maybe he should have opened up a bit more. Blowing off to that extent all the way up the bank is wasteful. If you have the steam, why not use it?

(Jim Young) The Castles are probably the loudest British loco but we didn't hear anything like that in the vid. I think the driver was taking the bank as easily as possible. Why? Maybe that was just his style.

great sound. never in doubt; driver had it all under control for slow but sure climb, and it's what Castles were built to do.

Every bank climbed by a steam train is an epic slog just as in the past every thunderstorm was a freak storm according to the Daily Express. Nunney was taking it very easily, I thought, and with steam to spare.

I remember being behind 45407 on the old dawlish donkey. Used to be a standing start from the station. Great noise on this tho

what makes specifically a castle so loud compared to other locos? Is the the two pistons in sync on each side?

That's a large part of the reason. You have two 8" piston valves exhausting together. Also the valve travel is very long (over 7" max).

AndreiTupolev Bittern was pulling the same load as the Castle, but an A4 has a higher tractive effort and only 3 cylinders, so the noise will be different. The clip I watched of Bittern on that same climb was shot a bit further down the bank, too...The Castle sounds fantastic and the driver and fireman are really on top of that job...just watch how clean the exhaust is!
