@JamesWongLife 3 года назад
@@imvarda I’m not sure why you would say it’s not educational. Then if someone wanted to learn English, should it be from U.K. or America? Also, china has many different accents including in the south where the accent is very very similar to the one in taiwan. So are they not educational and useful either? 到底 which part of china is acceptable for you?

@@JamesWongLife I'm an expat living in China and as an intermediate learner it is entirely wasteful for me to try and not learn anything but standard chinese, if you have to ask me what that means then I guess you are not an expat living here. Anyway, let's stop this dialogue - it's my opinion, you're free to have yours too! Grace is awesome.

I am bilingual because I moved to the US when I was around 11. I’m very fluent in two languages, and learning a new language like Chinese feels so difficult because sometimes things don’t make sense to me. When I hear you talk about how it’s frustrating to hear “A” sounding differently depending on the word, it made me realize that the difficulty is just a part of the process to overcome. Because English is a language I grew up with, I don’t notice all the little things that would be hard to explain to non-English speakers. When you point it out , I feel like my frustration with learning a new language is also the pronunciation because I don’t want to get into a bad habit that will stick with me (as in a habit of saying the same word incorrectly over and over). I think you are really amazing at teaching. Your process and work ethic is also so inspiring. Thanks for all your hard work in bringing us these videos.

The pronunciation is the thing we are all afraid about but we should work it since day 1 cause it's hard to get use to talk later. I speak english (not really fluently but i am okay), spanish and French, and i am learning 3 others languages. I really feel it when you talk about difficulties that natives speakers don't notice. I remember that some stuff were so hard for me in English back then and now it just come naturally even if i am not fluent .
@purinpat
@purinpat 3 года назад
@@shaps9311 Yes, I get a little discourage at times and upset at myself because I really want to get better. Our own language is so natural to us that we don’t really think much about it, so I want to get to a point when the new language will become so natural that I won’t have to think so much before speaking lol. That would be nice. ^^
@shaps9311
@shaps9311 3 года назад
@@purinpat if you wait until to achieve a good level before speaking you will regret it. I encourage you to start to speak now. When we were kids, we were doing mistakes while speaking our native language and now we are fluent. That's the same with new languages. Mistakes will help you to improve. If you are shy just speak to yourself. If you are shy, Repeat sentences you know when you are alone in your room, sing some songs, try to sum up your day to yourself in the mirror.

Wow! I only intended to watch maybe 5 mins at the most. I was only expecting fave food, tv show etc. You are insanely taleted and an incredibly hard worker! Very surprised you have time to eat or sleep with that workload! Haha! Awesome work that is very much appreciated. Thank you Grace. You rock🤘🏼💯 I guessed about physical age at 26, but intellectually, I think you would be closer to about master level.

As someone who is improving in conversational chinese, it was helpful to listen to you answer these questions in Chinese. Do you have recommendations for any chinese-language podcasts (prefer Taiwanese Chinese since I visit there regularly) to improve my listening skills, that aren't too difficult (podcasts discussing current events are often too advanced)

Ok wow. The fact that you were able to transform your English pronunciation to near native speaker level in 2 years is just amazing. I'm also from Hsinchu, but I had the benefit of living aboard for a long time to get my English to where it is right now. You are a living proof that learning English in Taiwan, or learning Mandarin outside of Chinese speaking countries, doesn't have to be a limiting factor to your language abilities. It really comes down to the method of teaching and personal determination.

Oh my god, 16:59 - 'bad' vs. 'bed'. That was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time! That short 'a' vowel gets confused allllllll the time with short 'e'. My younger students ALWAYS confuse them. It's really funny to see you point out the absurdity and that some sounds even still give someone like you trouble!
@clonkex

That's so interesting. As native a native English speaker it's not something I would have ever imagined to be a difficult concept to learn. I guess that's what it's like for native Chinese speakers when they discover that Mandarin students struggle with tones.

About 8 years ago I lived in Taiwan for a year and got to a middle intermediate level. Since moving back to the states and starting a job and General life issues, I’ve really let my skills fall behind. Thank you for your inspiration to continue! While you may see not traveling much out of Taiwan as a negative, as someone teaching Chinese and having great English abilities as well, it encourages me to refocus on my Chinese and not use an excuse of “I’m not in Taiwan anymore to really practice” - I look forward to many more videos and updates from you! One thing I would suggest for future podcast is taking an interesting Chinese news story.... not necessarily political but maybe viral internet stories, culture, fashion trends, travel, gaming, etc and explaining the story in a more intermediate level for listeners. Maybe one first half intermediate....a little slower to allow clarity in sounds and word order yet fast enough to pose a challenge. Then the second half in a more advanced way. Maybe have a friend come on and you two talk about it - once again maybe in a more slower pace yet natural talking and then in a more advance. Whatever you do, I’m sure it will be great! Don’t worry about vowels and sounds. If you travel more and interact with English speakers, those issues will correct themselves once you use them often. I feel like they are good to be taught and be aware of and practice, but won’t really stick in your mind and come naturally until you really use them in English speaking settings because they can be very tricky for non-native speakers. Just like bad mitten or piano, with practice you’ll become way more aware of the sound issues until you get to the point you are saying them correctly without even thinking about it.
