Edward Hopper is perhaps the best known early 20th century American artist. As we shall see, his realistic depictions of everyday urban scenes shock us into recognising the strangeness of our familiar surroundings. He was what is known as an American Realist, a term that includes artists such as George Bellows and the Ashcan School of New York but he was never a member of a group of artists and described himself as an Impressionist. He produced some of the best known and most recognisable American art and strongly influenced later artists.

Beyond the magic of the gift of talent, an artist's ability to persist in the struggle for acceptance and recognition is itself a thing of wonder.

A very engaging exploration of Hopper`s life and work Dr. Shafe. A quote from Joseph Conrad comes to mind when I look at certain Hopper paintings: "We live as we dream...alone." His wife Jo once compared talking to her husband to the dropping of a stone in a well, except that it made no sound when it hit the bottom. I highly recommend the recent Sevent Art documentary "Hopper: an American Love story". The relationship between Hopper and Jo is explored in much detail and it is a fascinating - and I think rather sad - portrait.

Nighthawks inspired by corner of Greenwich Ave and 11th St. Building still there. 70 Greenwich Ave. Google street view and you’ll see it’s definitely an inspiration. Used to be a diner.

If you have never read The Art Spirit by Robert Henri, a very interesting book.I believe Norman Rockwell was also a student.

I have just bought it and started to read. It is clearly an inspiring book which any artist should read. Laurence

Thank for clarifying name of Early Sunday Morning. I lived across the street from this site on 7th Ave much later from 1985-2000.

At 6:56 … ‘Sailing’ is an oil on canvas, not a watercolor

Thank you for pointing that out. The mistake is at 6:39 when I say "watercolour" and the painting is also mislabelled. It is oil on canvas and at the Carnegie Museum of Art. He had worked in watercolour before then and produced 'Sailboats' in watercolour in 1895 but that is a very different work and is at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
