Welcome back to our sailing journey. In this episode, we embark on an unforgettable voyage from the picturesque island of Islay to the charming town of Oban. Buckle up as we sit out stormy seas, visit iconic distilleries, and soak in the breathtaking landscapes of Scotland.
Our adventure begins in the beautiful Port Ellen. Before setting sail, we face some stormy weather, which gives us the perfect excuse to explore one of Islay’s most renowned distilleries - Caol Ila. Known for producing Kathrin’s favourite “Water of Life”, this distillery offers us an intriguing and delightful tour. As we sip on the finest whisky, we marvel at the stunning views across the Sound of Islay, with the majestic Paps of Jura creating a dramatic backdrop.
Returning to our trusty vessel, Polaris, we find her bravely battling a fierce swell in the harbour, stirred up by strong westerly winds reaching up to 45 knots. It’s all hands on deck as we adjust and secure additional lines, anticipating the winds to veer towards the northwest and intensify with gusts of Force 11. Despite the ominous forecast, the weather thankfully turns out to be less severe than expected, presenting itself as a mere gale with a few brief gusts of Force 10. Nevertheless, not a time to be out at sea voluntarily - at least not for us!
Once the wind settles, we seize the opportunity for a perfect day of sailing. We cruise up the scenic Sound of Luing, pass by the infamous Corryvreckan whirlpool, navigate towards the Fladda Lighthouse, and journey through the Sound of Insh. Our final stretch takes us up the Kerrera Sound, leading us to our destination - Kerrera Marina in Oban.
As we sail into Oban, we reflect on our incredible time in Bonnie Scotland. With a tear in our eyes, we bid farewell to these stunning landscapes and great friends we made here, yet with a smile on our faces, we look forward to new adventures awaiting us further north, in uncharted waters.
Thank you for watching and supporting our adventures. Stay tuned for more exciting episodes!

@@sailingpolaris Yes I can take the home sickness, please put them all your films up, have seen many but probably not all. I have an urge to get back and visit my relative and friends on the Islands and West coast down to just south of Oban.

@@sailingpolaris Look forward to seeing your next Caledonian Canal film. A friend sailed that in his Yacht Vadis, then the Western Islands for two years. I have temporarily lost touch with him though the pandemic. I sailed with Derrick from Amble Northumberland to Eyemouth, Scotland. His farther lives in Inverness so when you are there, please look out for Derrick and his yacht Vadis. ( Vadis is about 30-35 feet) Best wishes too you both.

How exciting for you - the discovery of new waters - I have loved your wanderings adventures and commentary - Ok so now some questions - did I see an Iridium go on your stern and you also have Starlink ...what are your thoughts and challenges on them... mmm maybe a video on them one day- safe travels..
@sailingpolaris
@sailingpolaris 2 месяца назад
Hi Dirk Thanks for watching and well spotted… We have both, IridiumGo and Starlink. This has a bit of history. We use a lot of data… Our initial comms setup was with a GSM router, a powerful antenna and SIM cards. In the UK you get super cheap unlimited data deals. However, when we came to Scotland we found out quickly, that in order to have reliable coverage you actually need two providers… but that worked for us. Last year, before we went to the Faroes and Shetland I wanted a tested sat comms solution for weather and emergency calls. So, I fitted an Iridium Go. We also took it with us on hikes etc. However, on the Faroes I found that no UK provider has any roaming contract and our data cost on pre-paid SIM cards exploded… Also, I sat on the fence for Starlink for a while, and finally they seemed to get a grip on their pricing and subscription models. Also, roaming has changed with most providers now only grant 40Gb of roaming (or high speed roaming), so the SIM option became less attractive, particularly with our upcoming plans. So, that‘s why I decided to take a cheap Starlink offer (£199 for a factory refurbished unit). Conclusion: the SIM card router solution worked perfectly in coastal areas in the UK, in Scotland it became a bit more of a challenge and internationally, it is not a valid solution for us. Additionally, even with the external antenna you have no connection from about 20-30nm offshore. IridiumGo is a tested concept but very slow and expensive. Receiving weather GRIB files took me anything from 15-30 minutes and with drop outs. Great for emergency situations and you can take it with you. Starlink is comparably cheap (as compared to mobile roaming, mobile prepaid and Iridium) and so far I am super happy with it. We switched from Mobile Regional (£85 p.m.) to Mobile Priority (£1.95 per Gb) for our North Sea crossing and then back. It worked great. We keep the Iridium because I like redundancy and for longer passages I would activate one of my spare Iridium SIM cards as an emergency solution. Hope this helps and thanks for the hint regarding a video about this. We might indeed do one…

@@sailingpolaris Shew - I was worried that you would do what you did - a detailed explanation for one person - hence the video suggestion - so others may learn from you - so thank you for your reply - to me it seems terribly confusing - I have used Phone based Predict wind for sailing around the Med - not fantastic as we cannot get signal sometimes - then last year we tried just using Windy - as you said Iridium and Predict Wind not cheap - but nice redundancy - I just looked at the price of Starlink - Euro 2800 for hardware and 292 a month for 50GB - then there is Garmin Inreach? And then heard Starlink is power hungry - that is why I asked the questions - and as we hope to follow your wake in Scotland - I appreciate your input and experience - many thanks - I reckon Svalbard and your lovely heating system is on your horizon..thank you for your time..

Because we could… 😇 As we have left the UK and are now formally resident in Switzerland we could register her under the Swiss flag, (which is our nationality)… Not of any benefit from any point of view other than the heart…
