This BMW M4 has had what I would call a "major overhaul." By far the most modified M4 I've driven to this point, Tom's track toy boasts a 525 HP VF Engineering "Stage 2" engine tune, Moton Clubsport Coil Over suspension, AP Racing brakes, a full roll cage, and BBS wheels. This car is an absolute monster, and extremely intimidating to drive quickly.

I don't even think Matt was being a jerk, he was sharing his honest perspective. The guy should have taken it better... 300hp may be considered strong by most of us, but not a journalist like Matt. I'd be happy just for having Matt testing my car, regardless if he likes it or not.

I can't help but wonder if the commenters suggesting other cars that would be more "manageable," "faster," or more cost effective, have really considered what this car is. This is a track car, people. The owner clearly stated this vehicle's intended purpose was to serve as his track car. Hence the track oriented suspension/tire/chassis setup. The owner likely has more than one vehicle, and clearly was a really level headed guy. He agreed with Matt's criticism of the car. He poked fun at himself multiple times about spinning at the track, and Miatas passing him frequently. The guy built an awesome track toy, and he came off as a really down to earth car enthusiast. I say kudos to you, Tommy.

@@future62 Or it's better sorted for a bigger track, not Laguna Seca. Perhaps COTA etc would favor more power. However for more technical tracks / spirited street drives, it definitely has too much power that limits the ability of actually enjoying it. Crazy how easy it is to make power on the S55

If you haven't, go back and watch his review of the turbo TC. It's one of the times that I recall he was genuinely terrified. That, or the on track review of a stripped, big turbo Fiero. That review was fucking insane haha

There really is a golden ratio of power to weight nowadays with road cars. (notice I said ROAD cars) Really, anything more than 250 bhp per tonne is unusable on any road (except maybe the interstate, right before your licence is revoked). More so on the tight and twisty mountain roads we like to rip up. For comparison, this M4 has around 320-330 bhp per tonne, and it's obviously way too much. Even for Matt, who I imagine is way more experienced than 85% of us watching.

For road cars it's like 500 NA Horsepower or 400 Turbo Horsepower is about my ideal for the canyons. Both those engines will put out about the same amount of power in their midrange (the turbo motor with more torque) and make a car feel very fast in the canyons without really being in over your head.

so he went from a 255 front to 265, and a 275 rear to a 295. that's no a lot of tire for the power.

yup, leafspring I agree 100%. Some of these new fast cars are to big and to heavy and compensate with huge horse power. I'm hoping the new supra slots into my thinking on the perfect sports car, time will tell

This BMW is slow, I bought a Volkswagen Golf 7R hgp with a 3.6L VR6 biturbo making around 700hp when i bought it from the dealership. It's a hot hatch for sure. Keeping up and going past super cars.

I think this is the best One take so far. Love how transparent Matt is when driving it. Guys that mod need to understand you can over mod a car. If he wants a track car, it's not about power it's all about balance. If the owner is spinning all the time the car isn't tuned correctly for his skill. Even a skilled driver may simply have better throttle input but the power still doesn't get utilized. Sometimes I wonder why people go for such power figures, unless you're drag racing the car it's almost redundant - especially for a car that already comes with so much power. Lastly, he needs to get a real chassis tuner to set his car up because a twitchy car is a car with poor set up. With $10,000 suspension, it's nice to brag about it, but there are only so many chassis/suspension guys that know how to even work with the adjustability of Motons and he needs to actually hire someone next time he's at Laguna. Hats off to him though for building a hardcore M4, hope he dials it out.

it's really difficult (or nearly impossible) to make a turbo motor sound good, that's why most manufacturers resort to sound augmentation through the speakers.

What a petrolhead conceives as "good sound" is actually wasted energy in most cases. BMW is a master at getting the last bit of performance out of their cars. The price for that efficiency is a lack of sound. Turbocharged engines can sound very spectacular. 90s straight 6s are a perfect example, and 5 cylinders still sound awesome, today.

Sigma Projects Yes they copy the design, but they use way cheaper materials. BBS wheels are usually extremely strong and light. No doubt those FI-R are almost worth what they cost, but the look doesn't match the price, imo.

Yeah, that is the disadvantage with all these turbo engines. Low down torque is amazing but if you prefer great sound it mostly isn't the thing to have. The only company that does a really good job making a turbo V8 sound almost non-turbocharged is AMG. All the others have this muffled, damped sound that isn't really raising my brow. NA is still king in the sound department.

I can't believe Matt has never been in an accident while filming one of these! It just looks so insane from my point of view just watching behind the monitor, it looks like he's just flying around corners and I'm thinking "what if a coyote or dog or something ran out in front of them!?" I mean He's just having a casual conversation as he's driving warp speed around curves through the canyon. But I suppose Matt is an awesome driver with plenty of experience and obviously knows what he's doing. I pray he stays safe and keeps making the awesome videos!

Funny to see this older video regarding the f80/82. Competition package fixed all these issues, as well as the revised factory tuning from bmw, and a midpipe is a must for these cars.

Dang that is one bad ass M4. I agree the power delivery is crazy is these things, almost unusable (unless drag racing). I've only driven stock M4/M3's, I can't imagine the power on this guy.

The only big reviewers that actually hated the GTS were Clarkson and Chris Harris. The Motortrend guys liked it (which is rare for a modern BMW), Sport Auto germany liked it, the Carfection guy liked it (said it's the best M Car by far, even if it's too hardcore for him personally), Evo uk liked it (5 Star review), AutoExpress liked it (5 Stars), Autocar uk liked it (4,5 Stars), Car Advice Australia liked it (9.5/10), Sport Auto France liked it (top 3 cars of the year for them). The common saying that the M4 GTS is a failure from BMW is mostly bullshit .

There really should be a test that people have to pass to be licensed to drive these very powerful cars. Just look at how many people drive their Ferraris or Lambos out of the dealership and crash right away. I'm glad I had 7 years of track experience in my 325is before getting my e46 M3 years ago. Learn the basics first, then add the power.

In Germany, when you buy a new BMW //M car, the car salesmen at BMW really push you to the "M Driver's Package" which includes a one day driving training at a performance driving course. At least from what I can say is that these trainings are really, really good. Pretty useful in my opinion but no one can force you to do anything.

I'm not a bimmer guy, but my understanding is that the "modes" adjust throttle mapping, so in my mind, the fact that eco mode is easier to modulate is because it's a more linear throttle response (eg. 10% pedal is 10% tb opening) whereas sport mode is more aggressive (eg. 10% pedal is 40% tb opening). I'm a Subaru guy so I've tuned my throttle to react in a linear fashion as well, where the factory had it tuned to react similarly to the latter scenario; I miss having a physical throttle cable.

The linear power delivery, throttle response and sound of the V-8 E92 will always make it better. M4's on track are a spin waiting to happen.

MrZyLeXx the gt3rs loses to the zr1 which cost $100k less . The gt3 loses to the Camaro zl1 1le which cost $80k less. The m4 GTS loses to the 1LE. America is destroying it right now. I own a gt3 and a m4 f82 so I’m not bias 😂

This seems like a really well sorted M4. Kudos to the owner and Matt for a great vid. Not my cup of tea, would rather get an Alfa Giulia 2.9TT, or E46 if I were to go BMW, but wow this looks fast as hell. Well done.

The only things I'd do differently, if this were my M4, would be a Vorsteiner GTRS4 widebody kit and a low-mount Voltex GT wing. Other than that, i wouldn't change a thing. It seems like a very well thought out build, so kudos to the owner.

I saw this video before getting my M4 .Mine now has a BM3 Stg2 tune as well. Its truly squirley fast -in a good way. 305 rears and 275 fronts tames this beast nicely. Now that I've put some seat time in one, I believe that the reviews for both F8x M's would've been even better had they come with more rubber. 275's /285 section rears are just not enough.

I dont usually comment on videos but when i saw this i felt like that i have to. M4 is using Dual Vanos and Valvetronic system which basically gives you the infinite combination of valve timing and lift, also charge pressure control calculations in DME (aka engine control unit) are very sophisticated so you can feel the minimal amount of fast fluctuation in engine torque. (basically BMW using all the technology in fuel and air control to provide a steady and flat torque output) based on your explanation this car suffers from DME tune 100%

"Cars are to fast now" yes that's why I think the M2 and the Cayman are the best sports cars for public roads. Manufacturers should shoot for 3000 lbs or less weight, around 300-350 HP and focus on handling and agility. There is a motorcycle term that applies - flickable. Hell, I have to hold back driving my GTI around :)

I think BMW's were too slow for their price points until this car. The 335i was fast enough, but the suspension wasn't good enough. This M4 is a 335i with m3 suspension, so it really is the only bmw I'd want to buy.

Robert Wilson while i agree that they havent been as fast as competitors in a straight line, they were RWD. Ms have historically chosen driving experience over crazy 0-60 times and i think thats part of their appeal (although that seems to be changing with the new AWD M5)

In my opinion they lacked power. The older cars were just too slow, not in a straight line, but also around a track because they didn't have enough power. But now the m4 can be made actually fast, and that's good.

That moment when having no lag doesn't make things better :P About that thing, that is more manageable closer to red line than it is at 3k rpm; I think that it might be a characteristic of BMW's inline sixes and how they deliver the torque. I have a much older BMW sixer with a lot less torque and I've noticed that it is much harder to keep it together when powersliding on snow or ice between 2.5k - 4k rpms than it is when doing it above 4.5k rpm. If I want to initiate a slide just by using the throttle, it's noticeably easier to do it from 2.5k than it is at 4.5k. At 4.5k it just grips and launches forward. Maybe is just an illusion and all engines behave the same way. I'm not that experienced with sliding other cars in the snow.

a front plate is required in CA. A lot of people don't bother because it's like a $50 ticket.

Same in Maryland. Tell the officer you took it off for a track day or that you're hesitant to drill into the bumper, and write it off as a cool car tax if you get the ticket.

We also can't have any amount of tint on the front windows which is ridiculous in sun-soaked California. I had a small 30/35% on my car and still got pulled over any time a cop saw me. It's pathetic.

This thing sounds like a full race car. On the edge and ready to spin. It's funny that the purpose is to grip and drive better as a car. But when you max mods it's almost the opposite unless your driving is flawless with inputs. I've driven a full track car a few times and like he said it's constant spinning on what on normal cars would be easy turns and driving.

ok so I have question, how does this Modified BMW M4 differ from the Dinan BMW M4 that you drove a few episodes ago? You say that this M4 is a little too much, but the Dinan M4 has around the same power and same modifications. Do you think Dinan did a better job at tuning the car?

So I was just wondering why you went with the Stage 2 tune you have, rather than a Dinan tune, which would preserve your warranty? Great car btw, I have just moved from my BMW 135 M Sport w/Dinan Stage 2 to Jaguar F type V8S. The supercharger instant power/torque delivery is quite different to the 6 cylinder turbo torque hit.

See, this is the problem with modern M series cars and their turbos. These cars put down a lot of torque at an impressively low RPM from the factory and you gotta love that. But then when you go to tune these cars things get sketchy. Because now They're producing a lot more torque that's still coming in at a low RPM and the rear tires. Combine that with short gear ratios and the rear tires have trouble coping. They've effectively eliminated turbo lag but weirdly that might not be a good thing. BMW is going to have to come up with a solution to that for future generations, especially when you consider that a tune on a M4 makes it difficult to drive. If they intend on bumping the power up they're going to need to either let it come in more progressively or make the switch to AWD.

They underrated the actual power figures for the factory cat, it's actually making the power they state at the crank, at the wheels, so realistically stock they make 500HP. 500WHP is realistically edging towards 600 at the crank, 525WHP would be definitely more than 600BHP.

The demon of a car, like you said in a One Take once haha. Owner was cool af tho. Many people would try and hide the fact their car isn't perfect because all the money they put in it. But he knows damn well that car is crazy.

FYI Matt, Dinan doesn't make the 4.6 any longer because another company has stepped up to become the authority on the E60 M5 and the E9x M3 engines. They are substantially less expensive too.

It would be interesting to see some videos discussing what power to weight is the most fun. I've been wondering for a while if large power cars are boring on the road. Is driving a modest car with 170 Bhp per ton where you can use a lot of the power more fun than a car with 400 bhp per ton. One of your comments in the video is that you can't tell how fast you are going, is that a good thing? Your last video of the Porsche Cayman gts you didn't seem impressed with only 300ish bhp, how much of the power were you using? A car with much less power can go around corners at a speed that isn't really sensible, is big power just about accelerating out of a corner and the straights? I may be missing something as my expeiriance with powerful cars is limited to cars I don't like.

@@astronmr20 The twitchy throttle response is because of the shitload of extra power from the tune. Sport+ throttle on a stage 2 car is basically useless because it's so twitchy. Sport throttle in M2 mode is the way to go when you're tuned.

It's the tune...that huge power surge with most OTS tunes are way too aggressive. They need to make the power more linear like the factory CS tune.
