52nd Street - 'What Did I Do Wrong'.

The 80s was a period in which the rock press would castigate soul, funk and R&B acts for being lyrically inept. To be fair they were usually correct with that statement. Hip Hop and Rap was generally the only black music genre outside Jazz and Blues that challenged their own grooves with cutting edge messages. One of 52nd Street's strengths was; their ability to lyrically capture the moment.
They had a way with dealing with melancholy. Charlemagne had a way of making you both laugh and cry within album tracks -like no one else since probably Gil Scott Heron.
'What Did I Do Wrong' visualises through the eyes of the child the father's struggle as a recurring single working parent.
Michael Brecker using an early in-development-stage EWI electronic wind-synth nails Diane's brilliantly executed delivery to the wall with the saddest of solos I've ever heard. Grab some tissues you'll need them.
If you have the chance, check out 52nd Street's 'Children of the Night', 'Look I've Heard it all before' and 'Something's Going On'.

It's with the greatest sorrow and regret that I have to announce that we lost Diane Charlemagne today. She fought long and hard in her quest to beat cancer but the music industry has now lost an innovative singer songwriting star. 52nd Street has now tragically lost 2 iconic lead vocalists including Beverley McDonald. I've been informed that feelings in the industry with Diane's musician and global music business colleagues; from all walks of life and musical genres is one of utter shock, sorrow and sadness. Tony Henry, Tony Bowry, John Dennison and other ex-52nd Street & Cool Down Zone members would like to thank all the kind posts and comments on all web sites regarding Diane as a wonderful singer, songwriter, performer, person and friend. She once said in an interview in the 80s that Billie Holliday was her greatest inspiration. That's going to be some jam session up there with those two... Thank you for the memories Diane Charlemagne........

There were some great brit soul bands around at the time. Loose Ends & The Cool Notes. But Diane had a very special voice. Great voices of similar bands of the time. Sharon Bryant, Deborah Cooper, and the amazing Renee Diggs. Rip Diane and Renee.

Coming out almost 2 yrs after their release 'Children of the Night', 'Something's Going On' was the siren song of the version of the group with Charlemagne as the front woman. They were obviously going for deeper stuff with efforts like 'What Did I Do Wrong?' & the title track (SGO), a surprisingly ambitious tribute to hardcore jazz and swing. One often wonders what could have become of the group if they were properly marketed in the States and if Charlemagne would have stayed with them?

❤️ Thank You for the extensive *liner notes,* Estelle! Without them, I would have still enjoyed *Michael Brecker's* Sax synth 🎷 *Solo* - now I know how he's done it…! Great! 😊 And as somebody already pointed out, 52nd St. reminds in voice, and style, of the other band *Loose Ends*… both great joints, in my opinion. When it comes to message, I'd like you to consider the group *The Family Stand.* Especially that tune *Ghetto heaven* - it's really really great!
