52v Battery Upgrade on Rad Rover ebike

I agree! I don't like the triangular battery velcroed to the bike. I don't like the way it looks and how it takes up all the room in the middle of the bicycle. Excellent upgrade! Looking forward to seeing the speed results!

I bought the Bafang G060.750.DC (True 750) after watching your video and I was convinced I needed to add hydraulic brakes before riding it. After a long back order from Magura for the MT5-E four piston brakes, I finally got my bike together with the motor, brakes, Bolton 35 amp controller and color screen. It is an amazing transformation! Thanks for showing me the way. Btw, I highly recommend the Magura brakes. They’re a little pricey, but worth it.

Brian, my friends and I use Anderson Powerpole connectors all the time with our ham radios. Quick tip, the sides of each connector are grooved - male grooves on one side, female grooves on the other. This means that you can slide the sides of the red and the black connectors at the ends of the wires together, creating a larger single piece connector, rather than having two smaller connectors at the end of each wire. ps: soldering is an easy and handy skill to learn. Plenty of tutorials for both soldering and for working with Anderson PP connectors here on RU-vid.

Thanks for another upgrade video. I agree that the battery box is much more pro looking than the battery in a bag. I can’t even stand those Sondor triangle batteries! The soldering the wires are not a big thing...but the plug and play is always convenient. Later you can practice your soldering👍 look forward to the test runs!

The gauge wire is a issue I’m wanting to solve as well on my RadMini. They say the thicker wire handles more juice going through it. You have 52v battery so perhaps consider going thicker wires at some point. To get the most volts to the motor it helps. Still the simplicity of your set up is tempting. Anyway great to see all this stuff it gets me closer to home on my set up. And yes that’s what I’m finding the cost adds up. Thanks!

Great video. Splicing the wires is rather trivial BUT you absolutely make the best call by using connectors. Everything is still intact so if it didn’t work out, everything is still stock and could be resold or repurposed. However you’re killing us here with anticipation though. Results please. LOL.

Hay, looking good... I suggest range test with throttle only and another test with puddle assist on level 3 for both stock battery and upgraded one. It could be done on multiple videos. That will help many people using the bike to commute.

Did the new battery fit on the rad rover the same way the old battery did? Or did you have to put on a new track for that size battery.

Shimano hydraulic brakes will be the cherry on top upgrade. You will love it.

sweet ride. add some motorcycle windshields that grip on the handlebars for smooth sailing. You're as rad as your bike man. Don't stop upgrading

Great video - Thanks for sharing. Monitor the temp of those junctions. You are correct the heavier gauge carries more juice. I would lean to removing un-needed connectors for reliability and less voltage loss across each connection. But your way is an easy test. Splicing a heavy gauge to a smaller gauge SHOULD set off your alarms - proceed with caution. The small 2 pin connector is a weak link for now. I need a new battery on my Rad City 4 and have the upgraded Bolton controller (1500w)- better connectors are a must.

I have a 2018 Rad...just went over 1200 mi. The only changes I've done are some Maxxi Mammoth tires (didn't like the Juggers at all) , a 3in. handlebar riser and better pedals. I'm definitely getting a new controller and dashboard. =)

I haven't had this much suspension for the 52V outcome since I upgraded the front suspension on my e-bike this spring.

I think 40MPH for going around town is just about right. You can go slow if you want or you can roll with traffic when you need to. Sometimes it's hairy and you need that quick throttle to get away from danger or something. It's about using the tools the right way. 1. Are you going to upgrade the brakes? How do those feel right now? 2. What ever happened to third gear issue? The cliffhanger is killing me on this video!

Good call on not getting a triangle battery. That was what I got for the bike I built and it kinda sucks. One Velcro takes like two seconds to pull off. Two they kinda flop around unless you make a way to secure them. I ended up replacing with a bottle mount like what you got. So that’s a whole new battery just so the old one didn’t get stolen. Wiring isn’t a big deal with what you did. Those connectors are prettt low residences

I have the Radrover 5 2020. I installed the Bolton upgrade.now it pulls 1500watts, excelerates like you wouldn’t believe,but the speed is still the same.

Loving it that is plug and Play and e-bikewise we're in two different positions but have the same idea mine's for 12 and a half mile commute so trying to do 40 in the streets with cars is what I need yours is just for putting and having fun which is nothing wrong with that especially out of that small rear engine with the mid drive is neat I might have to try to build one when my money is right

I got my Rover in February and like you think sometimes it would have been cheaper and easier, in the long run, to but a better bike out of the gate but it's literally been fun doing the tuning work and upgrades myself. Plus you gain knowing how to do so know how to fix and maintain it. And I like the connection you came up with, I'm thinking that's how I will do the battery upgrade soon so thanks for testing it out for me first :c)

If you decide you’d like to eliminate the adapter cable, PM me and I can modify that cable for you (free for fellow RU-vidr). I have an Anderson PowerPole crimp kit. That Anderson connector can accept 3 sizes of contacts (15A, 30A, & 45A), to fit the different gauges of wire. These connectors are extremely reliable. I use them at work for aircraft communication systems. Good thinking on the protective gear, hope you don’t need it!

Rad delivery - I ordered a Rover a month and a half ago. Rad site stated the delivery would be this month. I was a little concerned with the backorder due to covid and it appears as though Rad's showroom is temporarily closed, according to Google. Today I received notification that the bike will be delivered next Wednesday. So it appears as though the backorders are shipping as the Rad website states.

Where did you get the barrel connector that goes into the controller? My RAD battery is toast so I want to buy an aftermarket battery. 48v 20ah. Unfortunately, the cradle does not match the aftermarket battery so I have to do some thing similar to what you’re doing. I just can’t figure out where you got the barrel connecter from.Thx

I watch all your videos and find them very informative. I have a ariel xclass 52v and want to add an additional battery to run parallel. I have reached out to them but seems as though they are always out of stock. Do you have any suggestions. I have done some research and every time I am about to purchase, I hear a horror story about bike catching on fire. I am hoping to get a 52v battery 18amps and above as I do a lot of long distance riding. Please advise. I have already reached out to chi battery and they have nothing compatible and don't send anything to Canada.

Unfortunately for me I agree, this battery looks cleaner than the triangle. I bought a triangle battery for an adventure in building one myself. I've been wanting to use it with my rad forever but I couldn't commit to cutting the wires. I have the cord on the way though for this set up. It has been a while since I purchased my battery but I feel like it is a similar size to this. I bought from em3ev when they made a few options of triangle battery. I really enjoy the speed for flying down the dangerous back roads of my area to cruise around in town. People on back roads don't watch for or respect bicycles. I've had many an items thrown at me from cars. 😒

I have a 500w e-bike I put 30amp controller do you think upgrading to 52v battery from 48v would hurt the motor

Whatever works man. I'm in the same situation, my controller has ring connectors.. I have to make my own xt60 to ring connectors which is a nightmare for my first time.

To you who made this material to the channel. Nice bike. But the laws in NC TN Are as follows . If you are above 750 watts then you need a license for that bike . Only below 750 watts is not regulated.

Notice using 52v over 48v gets motor more pick up off throttle. Only 3 seconds faster than 48v but with higher Ah the range is about 5 to 7 miles more on throttle alone. The 52v is great to use when using cargo trailer or just being a bigger person than average. But it does create more heat to motor when using longer then usual. Anything higher of using a 1000 to 1500watt will get motor a bit hotter as I think its best not to go too far out of the Voltage of 48v to 52v. To use higher like a 60v , 72v and up is more suitable for the 2000watt and above for it is about having motor last longer.

Brian just a thought is there a temp guage for the motor and or the battery ? I did 30 miles one day in the heat and nothing seemed hot per touch.

That's a great deal on the battery. I wish I had known about electrobikeworld sooner, bought a new battery from Rad and it was over $600 w/ shipping. Also it's the same 48v as the stock battery, and doesn't include a mount or a charger, this is a way better deal. Thanks 👍

Does anyone know what the Rad connector is called? The barrel connector? I want an xt60 to whatever Rad uses.

What if the peak watts is lower than the total amps you can push to the motor? I wouldn't want to risk burning up the motor.

Do you know if the stock controller can handle 52v batteries? I plugged mine in and I had no motor power then the screen went haywire and it completely died and won't turn back on.

Next upgrade base runner field-oriented ebike controller will fit in the base of the battery on the down tube clean up the look a lot.+ increase efficiency top speed and Power and make it quieter at the same time or the ASI BAC 800 controller from Luna cycle for even more power that motor will handle it

I have purchased a Zugo Bike recently and am waiting for it to arrive. It comes with a Bafang internal controller 750w hub motor. The connecting wire is a waterproof 9 pin connection cord. I am wanting to upgrade the back hub motor to a 1500w hub motor with a external controller. I am wondering how to connect what would be the new hub motor and controller to what I suspect to be a 9 pin female cord. Does you have any advice on how to do so or past experience with this? Thank you in advance for any help!!

How do you like the gears that came with your up graded 750 watt motor? It looked different than the stock rad gears.

Sir, I need to ask you a question. The Bolton 35A 750w controller, can accept either 36v or 48v according to the site of boltonebikes. But here, you are using a 52v(aka 51.8v) which on maximum charge might reach voltages upto 58.8v. So isn't there any issue regarding that? If not , I would love to but it and make a conversion just like yours. Please reply, its a humble request.

A lot of radio control model plane outfits , and battery suppliers make adapters for just about any battery and controller made. Might help to look their for a adapter . Hobby King being just one with many combinations.

I got my hammer bike yesterday it got here really fast from upzy. They just left it at my door I did not sign. Where I live you should never do that. Anyway I have one like so it was sitting by my back door and I thought oh my God how am I going to do this. So I went and got my bike wagon and I pushed it into the garage on the wagon lucky I have the wagon. This wagon can hold 500 lbs we used it for camping. Anyway I got it put together it was charging it was half charged. I got on it I went to go out my driveway which has a hill. A lucky for me I crashed cuz I didn't have the handlebar tightened down or they didn't where it goes on the pole. I'm laying on the ground thinking this bike is too big it's more like a motorcycle but I got it back in my garage by hopping on one leg. So I got it back together I take off and I cannot believe how fast it is and it's not like a regular bicycle you can't steer that good around corners. I was at the End of the Street faster than I could believe it I had it on five. I want to turn but I couldn't and there was a car coming so I went in somebody's yard and crashed LOL I was starting to feel like a crash dummy. So the handlebars were way off again. I rode it back to the garage fixed it again. This bike has a handlebar adjustment which is great I finally figured out how to tighten it after I took a 12-mile ride around town. And I could not believe how I love that thing. If I had not been riding a bike since I was 7 years old there is no way I would ever be able to ride that thing even with two legs. Today I want to go get a thing that I should not have to buy a poll for my seat or whatever you call it I forgot. Because I have a wagon that I want to tow and also you cannot put the seat all the way down there's some weird thing in the seat maybe you can adjust it but I have no clue it has a little adjuster on the bottom I don't know if it's for a spring or what. But I need to be able to Flat touch the ground when I got one leg. I thought you had to Pedal all you really have to do is push off with one foot if you're going half a mile an hour you can take off yay I felt so free I was like this is way better than a wheelchair I got to buy the basics like a helmet a backlight. I'm like almost tapped out but I'm trying to get a battery on credit on u t z y. I don't know if it's the greatest company but I got the bike for 1399 or less. Their batteries are the cheapest I've ever seen and I was researching for days. I really really enjoy these videos. There must be an electric bike Community somewhere where you can meet other people that like electric bicycles. I live in New York state we have a lot of trails but the coolest one is the Erie Canal cuz it goes almost all the way across the state from Lockport to I don't know if very long long ways. It is supposed to rain today like torrential rain. If you are in really bad rain what does it do to a electric bicycle? I intend to take my bike camping with a wagon that I used to use to tow my boys in well they are grown up and they don't even bother with their dad and it's really sad but I like camping and I'm going to go have a nice day how much money do you have into that bicycle?

wire nuts and some electrical tape would do the trick. Soldering and shrink tubing would be best though.

Soldering would work, but your option is just fine.

Err..... He does not show the Bike running with the upgrade. Side note: Did he ever get 3rd gear to work after the 750 true motor upgrade.

Shimano are okay, but if you upgrade your power and speed, you'll want SERIOUS STOPPING POWER! I took off the Techtro and swapped in MAGURA MT5E Hydraulic brakes! 4 piston 203 mm serious stopping! You cant go wrong! Worried about security? Try a PINHEAD CITY LOCK . Used in conjunction with a solid *(ABUS) Cable and ulock(kryptonite, Abus) and the bike alarm shown in CITIZENCYCLE' S security video, you'll be all set! Last but certainly not least an affordable GPS called the BOOMERANG is also available. If you find decent affordable insurance, let me know!

Would you sell the rad battery?

I have a lectric Xp and added a front motor 1000w.

Best option if did solder would be ....Remove bat Anderson ....solder just an XT60 Male on to bat ....plug xt60 to xt60 with rad end ....reason been xt60 better connector than Anderson and have xt60 before rad connector is much more stable and more water resistant and stable than the Anderson ...again involves soldering ......However if was ever to solder XT60 on to Bat Anderson ...Do one Cable at time take off one Anderson and solder on one Xt60 side ..then the other ...that way your less likely to criss cross wires... The way you done it now is simplest method and best way to show it so that safest ......However they should Note That Red is on same side on each connector ....if in case person who sold cable has reversed the xt60 connector and soldered it wrong way around ..so always double check any two cables that uses converter and connector that positive negative on the right sides

I will not go faster than 20 unless I'm going downhill which I did yesterday and I went 30 but it was a little bit out of town my whole body hurts and that's the most fun I've had since at least four years and before I lost my leg. I got to do more studying on the bike. I believe they are listening to the people that make these videos I already had a pretty good seat when I got mine they put the kickstand where it should be because there was an issue with it rubbing on the break. I would like to know how come I hit the right brake and it makes like an electrical weird sound? And also the motor got pretty hot but it was 81° yesterday I don't know I'm going to try to research it the seat may B adjustable
