René Magritte (1898-1967) was an artist who provokes us and makes us think as well as amusing and troubling us. Every painting is a mystery for which there is no answer. It is difficult to resist trying to solve the mystery so I will suggest interpretations which will, of course, be wrong because as Magritte said, “It is the mystery that illuminates knowledge."
